If this is in fact a true hire I would wait and announce the hire after the whole staff is decided. This would keep the ILLINI nation from wondering if this is reality or not. I personally love this if it's true, but want confirmation on the whole staff. Lovie will need help to turn it around.

Part of the reason this got done was that Ron Turner and Lovie know each other well from the Bears. Whitman has a great relationship with ole Ron. So having that relationship certainly helped.

We have waited long enough. I hear local radio host saying they are happy with being mediocre. I want to know when mediocre became our standard. I want champions and I think that is what we all want. GO ILLINI!!!!!!

Of course Teddy calls the firing clumsy. That guy is such a tool.

On the Tay & J Show, around the 101 mark, Ryan Baker says while he doesn't know the terms of Lovie's contract with Tampa, he is guessing Lovie might not lose any money by taking a college job over a pro job.

If that is the case, then Tampa can pay him 10 mill over the next couple of years and we won't need to pay him anything. :D

heard a potential rumor about OC....

@theRealJeffJ97
Both oline coaches with NFL, Big Ten experience, former NFL, college head coach as offensive coordinator, big, decisive move by Whitman

he then clarified that it was a former NFL Central coach. Said to a guy "guy who guesses Mariucci/Morningwhig/Tice was "in the ballpark". Again, don't know how much stock to put into it...but thought I'd throw it out there for you guys to debate about.

name I'm hearing....Mike Sherman. Former Texas A&M head coach and former Packers head coach. Now coaching high school in Massachusetts.

One person that may be in play for OC is Jeff Tedford. Former coach at California. He was supposed to be Lovie's OC at Tampa originally, but he got very sick. Then last year he coached in the CFL I believe.

Yep. I posted that a few pages back. Seems to make sense. My thoughts below and why I suggested Phair and Tedford.

DC: Mike Phair, has connections to current Illini team for some stability and also the obvious connection to Lovie from Tampa Bay.
OC: Jeff Tedford, has connections to Lovie, as mentioned by Greenwood, and has had recent success in the college ranks at Cal.

This would give Lovie a good support team of guys who've been around the college game recently. Other people have also mentioned John Holecek, Luke Butkus, and a few others to round out the staff, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tedford and Phair are the top assistants.

Going to bed now. Hope this is not a dream and when I wake up it's still the same ILLINI team. I bleed blue and orange and want this to become a team that is as good or better than the "elite" teams. GO ILLINI.

Think how much this changes the game with competing with Fitzgerald and the cats to be Chicagos B1G team. Obviously you want more, but it starts there.

I mean, I remember before urban Meyer went to o$u that lovie was a fringe
Candidate for the job. Guys, are coaching staff is going to be miles better than Indiana, Purdue, northwestern, Rutgers, Maryland, Minnesota, and possibly penn state, Wisconsin and Nebraska. We should be a regular bowl team again soon.

There are an innumerable amount of bowl games every year. That has to be the standard st the very least.

Two thoughts:
1) I'm still waiting for the rug to be pulled out from under us. It seems to good to be true to get Lovie. I'll breath easier once a contract is signed. Speculation means nothing without a signature, although this is some of thickest smoke I've ever seen.

2) If Whitman can pull of hiring Lovie Smith (which is a grand slam in my mind), does Whitman already become at the very least a home run hire? I swear this guy is exactly what we as fans have been wanting for so long. Someone who believes so much in what we can and should be that he is willing to push all the chips forward and bet on Illinois!!!

My source says it's a done deal, and money won't be a problem for assistants. Pocket book is open.

After what's transpired today, I'm now convinced that the apocalypse is near. Miracles like this just do not happen this quickly to Illini football teams. Something sinister must be brewing. 404 error! Does not compute! I hope I wake up tomorrow and this is all still real.

Pluses:

1. Chicago connection
2. Instant prominence and national name recognition. (Yes, I've been a Tressel, Harbaugh, Sean Payton fan all along....even while realizing none of them would come here.)
3. Respectability. And as is often stated, the Football program is the "front porch" in framing the perception that outsiders have of our beloved University
4. Butts in seats. Immediate boost to ticket sales. Expecting to see rapid and sustainable increase to 50,000/game and then 60,000/game.
5. Big boy coaching staff. It takes millions to bring millions into the program. Can't wait to see how it plays out.
6. Diversity hire
7. Recruiting -- there's just no way we continue to compete against the MAC for our talent pool. An end to the embarrassment.

Did anyone see the news gazette this morning? I can't link it but they are negative on this whole thing.

That doesn't make any sense. Maybe they want us to be losers forever?

I'm buying season tickets for sure. Any guidance I can go about getting them?

I would call the ticket office and tell them the type of seats you want. Since I like sitting up high where I can easily see the entire field, I sit in the middle sections of the east balcony. The seats are just $150 each and the view is great. Here is a link to the Memorial Stadium seating chart on the forum:
