I could understand the wait if we were hiring a professor or a facilities maintenance person.

This is different though, surely they don't have to follow any goofy rules for such high profile hires?

When do you guys think this will be official? Tomorrow?

Everything about Whitman so far shows he gets the press and the PR game (note how he addressed the Cubit 'leak' rumors right up front in his presser). Tomorrow is Peyton Manning day. I'm guessing no earlier than Tuesday and hopefully before the basketball tourneys heat up.

Even moreso for high profile hires, really.

But hey, this is a good test. Clearly there is some sort of agreement in principle in place with Lovie. The usual University bureaucracy is standing in the way of bringing this to an efficacious and credibility-building conclusion. Your move, Josh.

I think he told the story about the Cubit leak to our advantage. I'm not sure it's the whole story.

Cubit news had to get out before the Lovie news hit the presses, and there wasn't much time if Lovie was in town.

Estimates of Lovie's coaching staff hires my fears):

On D:
DC - A DC from somwehere.
DLine - a Dline from somewhere else (maybe Danimal)
DBacks - A DBack from even somewhere other than those

On O:
OC - A DC from somewhere.
OLine - A Dline from somewhere else.
Running backs - A DBack from some where other than.

You see where I'm going. Lunt learns to tackle, in other words.

I guess we really need to remember. The official announcement affects when spring ball starts. I'm sure the team is chomping at the bit at this point.

There are hiring rules in Illinois, but isn't there also a clause for expediency in cases of extraordinary circumstances? I would think this would fall under that.

The idea that there is a unit of the University that is currently without executive leadership and is being forced to delay their own business, while a uniquely qualified individual has agreed to take the job.

That seems like the exact kinds of exigency that that waiver process was designed for.

And back to football. Yes the chicago press has a lot of naysayers. It's amazing how ignorant they are when talking about college athletics. That being said they tend to dwell (understatement) on everything that could be bad about this hire. Well that could happen but a lot of good things can come too. They act like nothing is different. Lovie's offense was bad at Chicago, therefore it will be bad at Illinois. Do they think Lovie hasn't figured out his offense needs to be better? He had a pretty decent offense at TB, so maybe he's figured some things out. I have faith

I don't see how any reasonable person can see this, if true, as anything other than a miraculous hire for a program like Illinois. It creates such a huge buzz and brings credibility to a coaching job that hasn't had any in years. I do think Cubit carried himself well but hadn't coached as anything other than an interim yet.

I was listening to the Score this morning and a Wisconsin fan called in and was laughing at the situation saying he couldn't be happier. I just chuckled and thought to myself, right back at ya. Paul Chryst is your head coach for crying out loud.

And, maybe what he figured out is that you need a better QB in the NFL to be successful.

On another note, the 2017 game at Soldier Field will be an awesome homecoming for Illinois as well as Lovie!!

I'm not sure what "done deal" is but I do know that he is here. 100% thrilled with the future of the program. Next step is to lock up a killer staff.
