It’s frustrating to try and process what’s happened sometimes after a disappointment like this. I’m sure most of us thought the Illini had a great shot to make the final four. I feel for the players in that there’s no shot at redemption. There’s no next game in a few days, the same group of players doesn’t come back the next season. We feel bad today, it’s got to be killing them.

When you are dependent on two freshmen for major minutes, to advance in this type of tournament they have to perform almost flawlessly. They did that in the BTT, they did not today. At no time during that game did I think Illinois matched Loyola's intensity. That's on the players.

As someone said before, maybe the grind of this season just caught them from behind today against an elite top 5 CBB defense.
No family. No friends. No socializing. No girlfriends (WINK WINK). What a gauntlet.

I guarantee there are tears behind the doors and they know they didn't match Loyola's intensity.

I can't wait to watch them again.

On intensity by Freshmen, Curbelo was on the floor many times and Adam Miller was a bright spot in our play....

we did not match their BB IQ on the floor and on the bench (Coaches).

This is also a team that had to go to overtime to beat Nebraska and Indiana, lost at home to Maryland, and barely beat Ohio University, again at home. Not to mention losing almost wire to wire to Michigan State. No real run from Illinois in that game either. Also, think about the Northwestern game on the road where they were throughly outplayed for one half but a bad Northwestern team, only to have a second half for the ages. I said it before - this team had a tendency to play down to its competition, other than, for some reason, Minnesota, which Illinois thoroughly dominated.
True, but wins on the road at NE and IN. OU early in the season, and we all saw yesterday that they're not shabby. However, clearly all those games indicated a weakness that we all acknowledged. They often would not show up until late in the first half of those games. At best.

However, the games at WI/MI/OSU and the three BTT games consecutively showed great development, depth and maturity. There's regression to the mean, which we didn't see today, and there's just a bad game where everyone is largely off. It happens.

I don't find the OP's argument that "the team we'd come to expect showed up today" remotely compelling. In order for it to be so I'd need some evidence that, beyond those games early in the BT season against NW, MD and OSU, this was a continuing pattern. It wasn't. Most teams are up and down through the season. The stretch of, what was it, 5 games in 10 days, four of them on the road, at the end of the slate was brutal. The boys went 4-1, then went to Columbus four days later and won again. Then won three straight in the BTT in dominant fashion.

Today we played a solid team having an excellent, well-executed game plan, and lost. C'est la vie.

Now, with that, I'm really going outside.☀️😎

All this talk about no adjustments. Listening to the radio Deon said multiple times that adjustments were made but execution was NOT there. Loyola just flat out took it to us and we didn't show up ready. Trent 1 for 10, Ayo 9 points 6 turnovers. This is not on coach guys, get a grip.
I agree with you that individual physical performances were lacking. Getting blown by isn’t on the coaches.

but it’s clear they had a game plan and were executing. coaches should either anticipate that and have a counter ready, or adjust once they see how well/poorly the game plan is working on your team. That’s getting the team “ready.”

It felt like our game plan was “we have more talent and that will prevail” —not how it works in March.

In many of the losses this year it felt like it was us being outcoached/schemed. I think Holtmann, for example, has Underwood’s number.

Thanks team and coaches for a great season. Tough loss to take, but a lot of special moments to remember.

Underwood’s refusal to move to a zone or do anything different against the double screens and pick and rolls cost them this game.

Great season with some great memories. Looking forward to an excellent season next year.
This is the one thing that bothered me. If they are beating you off the jump (our guards were two steps behind their men on the drive) don't you have to try SOMETHING different to try and interrupt their success? We looked super easy to prepare for and we looked wildly unprepared to deal with them. Repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Troublesome. From the player's standpoint, we looked hesitant with drives and shots. We looked slow. They looked like they were having fun. We looked like we were playing scared. With all that said, Loyola outplayed us and it was not close. Props to them. I hope they make a deep run. Also, super fun year! Kids worked hard and staff for the most part did a great job. Looking forward to next season. We really need to learn a few different looks, though.

What did he say were the adjustments being made? That entire game looked like one highlight on an endless loop.

I80 I agree this was a fun year and more to come our way. Thank the seniors for this season. Looking forward to next season. It will be fun. Hey we win the Big Ten tournament. Good luck to Ayo and his future.
For some reason I don’t know when Kofi would come out to set a pick zAyo didn’t wait for him. Secondly how many times did Ayo get trapped out high and seemed like he froze with the ball. Like I said next season will be fun.

“Today just wasn't our day. We tried everything in the bag. Everything that's made us one of the most efficient offensive teams today, just for whatever reason didn't work.” - Illinois head coach Brad Underwood

Congrats to the Illini on a great season. Once in a while you have a bad game. We had one today and Loyola had a great game.

Watching Loyola run offense and play defense is why I love college basketball, unfortunatly it was against our Illini today.

I've been listening to Cocteau Twins all afternoon. I think that means I'm not in a good place.

Anyway, hell of a season, disappointing ending. I wish nothing bu the best for the guys that are graduating and/or moving pro. We'll get an NCAA championship eventually.

I’ll go with Vegas today

You think Holtman has Brads number? Trying to figure that one out

They ran the same play over and over, same as Ohio St. Post with the ball at high elbow, run guard off down screens from the wing and wrap around the post for the hand off. We trail behind the guard and never, ever can stop it. Simple switch from one of the screen defenders the cut off the curl/hand off would have been nice to see. Can't believe we decided to die with our principles when they have clearly found the flaw and repeatedly exploit it.

You can say effort or whatever, but the plan meant they were dead in the water. Everytime they slapped the floor today I felt awful because Loyola could run the same set and no matter how much we "effort", we were toast.
I went back and watched the Wisconsin win over Loyola. This is what Wisconsin did -- they switched to counter the handoffs. Also, Wisconsin initiated their offense in myriad different sets -- only sometimes it was a high ball screen, and interestingly Loyola did not blitz the Wisconsin high ball screen -- Krutwig stayed back in the lane. So, Loyola's defensive strategy against Wisconsin was very different than the defensive strategy against us. Loyola came into their game against us today with a unique strategy. We came into the game planning to do what we always do, and then bullishly tried to do those same things the entire game.... This may not entirely be a coaching issue, but is also a personnel issue. Krutwig's versatility allows Loyola to do different things. As great as Kofi is, he is still raw, and does not have the same flexibility as Krutwig.

What? Illinois beat OSU 2 out of 3 this year and split with them last year. So no, I don't think Holtmann has Underwood's number.
but Turgeon is a different story unfortunately.
