These guys had a great season that ended too soon with one bad game and a well prepared opponent.

Historically, Illinois has never been a morning basketball team as this isn't the first time we've lost morning or early games in the NCAAA tourney. Was my only worry after I saw the game time. At night, this is a different game.

Big hat tip to Loyola. They outplayed us and were better prepared. Wish them the best and for the rest of the tourney.

Several thoughts.

1. Loyola played an absolutely excellent game on offense and defense.
2. There was just not enough adjustment on either end to right the ship
3. Illinois shouldn't have played Loyola at least until the next round.
4. Having no S16 appearance (minimum) for this team is just so effing devastating

Thank you seniors and Ayo for an unbelievable season.

H/T to Ramblers. You earned it.

sums it up completely

Would like to see Loyola scheduled in OOC regularly - we played every team better the second time around so that would've helped here. And probably would've prevented the committee from forcing the matchup on us to begin with.

Loyoala literally ran the same simple offensive set every time down the court. Why didn't we even try a different defense? Seems like changing up something would be better than watching them do the exact same thing every time.

Either way, it was a great season. Ended in disappointment but a great season anyway.
Hard to change up defense when we haven’t done it all yr

You'd like to think that everyone's capable of understanding how hard these guys worked, day in and day out, for their entire lives, to get to this game. And to be thankful for what we enjoyed this season and last and to be grateful to them and compassionate for them. But you can't, alas.

To have 3 timeouts under 4 minutes when we couldn't get anything going is insane. Loyola outplayed us today. They got up 10 and never looked back.

Well be back next year. Maybe not as talented, but hopefully more experienced.

I thought the exact same thing.

Loyola played well, but two things stand out. First, Ayo had a horrible game, and doesn't deserve a lot of his accolades. He is a really good but not player of the year. Secondly, poor reaction by coaches. I am too old for this, not many chances left for me.
Sometimes a team is bound and determined to take away a certain threat on your team - the coaches need to react to that and adjust. The defense they were putting up did not suit Ayo being the PG. I actually would have been fine with Ayo sitting starting the 2nd half and tell the other guys to get it going. It was not his day - and I know the inclination is that it will turn, but sometimes a kick in the butt is called for.

Loyola wanted to do surgery on us and we just let it happen. Never once tried to shift tempo in our favor or pressure and run on them. Inexcusable adjustment by an otherwise great coaching staff. You have the better athletes and deeper bench, press and turn up the tempo and make the thing into a track meet.

Awful rebounding and turnovers is on players
Ayo didn't show up and his lack of NCAA experience no doubt played a role in that.
Looked sleepy in a morning game
Miller and Kofi (and kinda Curbelo) were only two who showed up so future is bright with them. Hopefully Kofi comes back for one more year.

Now that's on coaching. When we started pressing it looked like we hadn't pressed or worked on it all year. They broke it easily and we looked like we had no idea how to trap. You have to be prepared for everything and make adjustments if you want to win a championship.

No adjustment on defense for the double screen at the top. At some point you have to stop fighting over the top of the first screen so the ball handler can’t cleanly get to Krutwig.

On offense you gotta go away from the immediate ball screen at the top. Loyola was just eating it up with the help defender and we never really initiated the offense a different way.

Though day for the staff, great day for Porter Moser.

I believe we’ll be more talented next yr with talented wings coming in, and Kofi sticking around

A quick recap of Ayo's tough game!

Disclaimer: I love Ayo! But all we have now is laughter.

Even the 96 Bulls lost 10 times when they went 72-10. Even great teams have bad days and inferior opponents can have great days. I'd wager we beat them 7 or 8 times out of 10, but it's unfortunate we were on the losing end of those odds when it mattered most. Hats off to Loyola and my heart goes out to our guys because you know they didn't want it to end this way, either.
