No, not speculation. Everyone (him, his dad, underwood, reporters, etc.) on record saying having the ball in his hands and playing PG was a primary factor in his recruitment and that Illini told him they saw him as PG. Some examples:

I stand corrected for sure. After watching him try to run the point, I can see how it didn't work out. I can sure understand why he's transferring out. Honestly, he doesn't hold a candle to Frazier or Lucas at point.

and a player should have the same choice to leave for what he views as a better situation for him without being told hes quitter.

But you've missed the point that they are amateurs and can't be paid. That makes them quitters. Only people getting paid can make career decisions to move to a better situation for them personally.

Oh my goodness, are the "soccer moms" really running college bb too! You can't raise your voice with the players, today? The coach can't get on a kid on national TV! Please! Not to mention Underwood dole's out plenty of praise to these guys, also

It's the beginning of "flag basketball". Where you must say "May I ?" before putting up a shot.

I don't think this reflects on BU or the program negatively. Things are said, things are thought and visualized. Doesn't make them come to fruition.

The staff probably did see him as a point with the ball in his hands more than a combo guard when recruited.

Reality set in and guess what Mark Smith was actually more suited as a combo guard, NOT pg NOT cg when all said and done. He had the opportunity to have the ball in his hands to the tune of 20 minutes per game and his assist/turnover was nearly identical. NOT pg material, and shooting % 337 says not a combo guard, rebounding same as assist/turnovers further drive home not a combo/wing guard.

The kid made great strides athletically at E-Ville, that is not B1G and it reared its ugly head. Just didn't work, no harm no foul, move on both parties.:chief:

Old school is gone, sort of started when Knight was shown the door.

The bottom line is if Mark Smith wants to be a PG at a P5 school and run the show, he is going to have to work hard....really, really......really hard. It doesn't matter what system or school it is. Best of luck to him.

He simply hasn't been basketball oriented enough, long enough, to be "the" PG at this level. He has the physical tools, but now he has to develop. Maybe he thinks he can develop more in a different system, who knows.

All this hand wringing about BU's style is amusing. Every time I watch his pre/postgame interviews I keep nodding my head in agreement as well as thinking how much he cares about these kids and this program.:illinois:

I've said this before, but a coach who yells, doesn't dislike his players. Go back and see Frank Martin's post game interview outside the locker room just after SC got knocked out of the tourney. He yells, and clearly both likes and respects his guys.

He is a 2 guard with decent handles. Next year with Ayo and Frazier, he would never play point. It will be interesting to see where he goes and what position he ends up playing.

this is the "point" of this transfer... amazing how many with axes to grind have spun this

I've known many college students change schools with the purpose of enhancing their preparation for a chosen career.

Heard around town Smith is possibly leaning to ole Bruce

Yeah. It’s almost like the purpose of college is literally to prepare you for life after college.

Tubby didn’t exactly have the best choice of words there. I’ll agree with you on that. There were over 800 transfers last year which works out to roughly 2.5 per team. That’s a perception problem for the NCAA, and it’s anyone’s guess as how to solve it. Transfers should absolutely be allowed, but the NCAA should be encouraging athletes to stay where they start their career. Part of that is also making it harder for coaches to Crean kids. Allowing transfers without repercussions like requiring the athlete to sit out a year will push college sports even closer to being a glorified minor league system, and will funnel all of the best players to top tier programs every year. That doesn’t help the NCAA with their business model of claiming that these athletes are student-athletes.

I think a year off after transfer will do MS a world of good. It was obvious he had size and athletic ability, it was also obvious he was woefully unprepared for B1G level BB.

Time off will give him an opportunity to work on his game.

I have doubts he will be a star at this level but can certainly be a starter/high rotation guy.

Best landing spots would be programs that play half court offense and packline/zone D.

Ding, ding. I am now chiming in. First, best of luck to MS wherever he ends up. Secondly, I am retired Air Force and have seen my fair share of bosses who love to yell. If BU wants to yell to motivate his players, so be it. Third, if someone cannot handle that then making a choice to go elsewhere is the right thing to do (not implying MS could not handle it). Fourth, bosses do different things to motivate subordinates. Some yell, some don't, some coddle, some don't. It is finding out what motivates each individual and using that which makes a good boss. BU praised and chastised in public. He definitely yelled at his players; however, he may feel the need to address things right away and then work on those mistakes in practice. Fifth, I am not sure who said and I am not picking on anyone in particular, to say "kids" make bad decisions is true but even older folks, myself included, make bad decisions. We all do and we hopefully try to correct those bad decisions and not make the same mistake again. Lastly, whatever style a coach chooses to use is up to that coach and they alone live that decision. Rant over.

well said.

Kipper Nichols probably got yelled at the most. He said that he needed it.

Now that's what I'm talking about, Kipper. A coach isn't going to yell at a guy he doesn't think can do better. He cares and wants you and the team to do better. Losing sucks so you can't passively accept it. No, you fight, which I thought we did 95% of the time....nobody's perfect.
