Mark Smith transferring to Missouri

This may have already been mentioned here, but the real interesting thing is the "play" for Mark Smith by Cuonzo Martin.

I suppose it's possible that CM is an incredibly horrible evaluator of talent and still thinks under his guidance he can make Mark Smith into whatever everyone thought he could be, but I'm guessing his decision is based on taking a long position.

A long play to encourage one of Mark Smith's immensely more talented basketball pals to take a look at Missouri OR a long shot to have Mark "figure it out" at the P5 level. Could you imagine that dialogue for the next decade against an Illini program that is clearly emerging as one of their fiercest recruiting rivals?

Very little risk...other than a roster spot....but huge upside. Again, sorry that I haven't taken the time to read other comments as very possible this has been batted around quite a bit.

Smith, doesn't owe anything to Illinois or the fans. This is not a low blow. If Illinois don't like it they can kick MO butt and hold Smith scoreless when they play, which I hope will happen.

Based on what little I know I would guess that in a few years Mark and his parents won’t be enamored with Martin and Missouri either. Maybe Mark is one of those kids who will really explode after getting adjusted to the speed and size of the players at this level. I would guess that he doesn’t based on what I’ve seen though. I won’t be rooting against Mark and hope he succeeds. It would have been in his best interest to go to a mid major type school though. Apparently he isn’t wanting to scratch and claw for playing time and I’m pretty sure that’s just what he did to himself again.

I was surprised by how slow he was, especially laterally. He's a power guard with his current frame but I think he'd be better off becoming more lean. He still has potential to be a good player at the high major level.

+1

As far as being a true PG, IBIWISI.

Yes, little risk, big potential reward. Definitely a long play. Although I have doubts about the recruiting impact of a successful Smith reclamation project. Could range from huge to a no op. We'll see.

If taking Smith means no Ramey, that is flippin' great for us.

He plays for Mizzou now. He's a non-entity to me now. Whatever.

Pretty much my feelings. I was ready to wish him luck at his next school. Now that he's a Miznoz player, I can't do that.

Agreed. He is the enemy now. And here is some bulletin board material for the boys.

Mark Smith on Cuonzo
“I wasn’t going to make another mistake in not playing for him.”
“Last time, I chose my state school, but this time I’m back committed to Mizzou,” he said.

No, please no. This is not to that level. We'll possibly (assuming he doesn't get recruited over and leave again) only see him a few times and then he'll be gone.

Two years from now if he's still on the team (and Cuonzo is still coach) I am hoping we are at the point where it probably won't matter - but if he gets in the game, and I am BU based on this comment, there is no way I let him touch or take a step with the ball.

Like I said before, Mark Smith is nowhere even sniffing the same atmosphere as Eric Gordon.

Gordon averaged 35 minute/game and 20pts a game shooting 44% as a Freshman and left for the draft. He's is now averaging 18 pts and 31 min/game 10 years into his NBA career on the team most likely to win the NBA championship.

Mark Smith averaged 19 min/game and 6 points shooting 33% as a Freshman.

Just no.

“(Martin) is going to use me in a lot of different ways,” Smith said. “He’s going to use me any way I can to be a playmaker.”

Didn't BU try to use him in multiple ways to try to get him to make plays? Good grief...

It seems like MS, probably because of his parental influence in his ear, is completely deluded about his current abilities and skill set. He has the potential to be good, but he needs a lot of work.

The minute Mark started struggling, and not getting playing time, his parent had many people in their ears. As a result, Mark had his parents in his ears.

The influencers, or the "enemy voices", can't be understated when it comes to influence in that area.

Not all parents are created equal, and many some have ulterior motives when it comes to 5* recruits, but we toss around a kid listening to his parents as a horrible thing.

Nice post Hummus. The Mark Smith recruitment began in January from Cuonzo's people. This is not a surprise and follows the timeline of when he began meddling with Tyler Cook. He has also has not been the most compliant of coaches when it comes to Liddell either. Cuonzo doesn't believe the NCAA dead periods apply to him.

Why would anyone fear the NCAA anymore (unless you are a directional school)?

Im a Mark Smith fan. Not a BU fan yet, I gotta see it.
The Maryland game was won if you inbound the ball anywhere. Why would a good coach let a true freshman (DW) inbound the ball! Coaching mistake. Haphazard substitutions at times. As soon as 1 mistake was made, that player gets yanked from the game, results in tentative play and no game flow or rythym. Who would want to play in that system.. Yes, as a true freshman, MS wasnt great defensively either. But just wait till he matures and we get him finishing those 3 BR games making ALL his free throws with the lead at the end of the game like the DePaul game. Would have been smart to have excluded Mizzou from his possible transfer list.
We haven't seen the last of MS, am sorry he transferred but I understand why. He wasn't alone and I bet at least 2 of the new 6 transfer a year from now. There's a reason a home town guy is not happy and leaves.
Congrats to MS, great kid who gave the illini the first shot. He will love Columbia.

Yep, Underwood never gave him a chance!
