Mark Smith transferring to Missouri

Isn’t Ramey an ‘18 recruit? Mark Smith won’t be playing this year, and Ramey will be headed to NBA (surely this is his belief, though I have no idea!) unless they are limited on schollies, does this hurt them, really?

Posted this in another thread, but here's where Mark's Player Efficiency Rating ranked among freshman guard seasons we've had over the last decade.

In all seriousness, best of luck to Mark, but I'm not losing any sleep over this.

Wow. Did not realize he was the equivalent of Tate. I liked Tate, but he should have never been a power 5 conference point guard.

He shouldn't have been a starter but he would have been a good backup at a lot of schools.

You gotta wonder what he looks like under a staff that had any clue about skill development.

Tate was a weird player. A wizard with the really hard stuff of being a point guard, but incompetent at the basics.

You could see him becoming a good coach one day.

Can't wait to see Trent school Mark Smith in the Braggin Rights game in a couple years! I mean to wear Kendall Gills jersey number and to act like you are the home state hero and then transfer to Mizzou??? Wow! I'd expect the home state kid to stick it out since he acted like he had so much pride in the Illini. Hope he does well in life but I hope we kick their !!! in a couple years!

From the Kansas City Star:

The 6-foot-4 point guard can play both guard spots, but will likely play point guard for Missouri.

I think we've seen this movie before.

Like others have said, I'm really happy Mizzou ended up with Smith instead of Ramey. The Mizzou recruiting class this year is really, really weak.

Interesting graph. I would have thought DJ Richardson would be higher. He had a great freshman year.

Just occurred to me he may leave the team by then if he gets recruited over. We may never see him.

Why would folks Boo someone who just did us a favor ?

By then end of the season, Mark Smith could barely stay on the court on a team that went 4-14 in conference. With all the talent coming in next year, all he would do is take up space on the pine filling a slot BU now is using to snag better talent.

If Trent left for MO, I’d be furious. Instead I’m looking up the address to send Smith’s dad a fruit basket. Total two-fer = we free up space for someone who actually can cut it in the B1G, and Cuonznoz gains an ankle weight that won’t help him win any games (apart from potentially helping land Lidell).

By the time Smith even sniffs the court 18 months from now, our success will have made this a distant memory.

If all Illini fans boo the people who are not booing....I think it will work out just fine.

No offense to Mark Smith, but he is not even close to being a good enough player to be referred to as IDKWTI 2.

I guess I am on an island. I think this is the start of the best case scenario for ILL. I expect BU to have a functional and winning basketball team in the next two years. If Conzo keeps getting talent and wasting it, while BU wins with perceived less talent, kids are going to shy away from Mizzou like Mark Smith to competition.
Sorry for ending with a little jab. Meant for humor, not insult.

News flash

In an exclusive interview with the Onion Mark Smith revealed he chose bitter rival Mizznoz to spite all Illini fans who questioned his heart and his talent while vowing to make them regret it for years to come.

I questioned his ability to defend well this year, but I never questioned his heart, drive, talent. I suspect a lot of Illini fans will join me in wishing him well. I hope he does well at Mizzou and finds his game at the college level. He's got the talent. It just didn't work out for him here. No hard feelings Mark! Just try to have or two bad games a year against us if possible. ;)

Does this announcement come with another speech from his high school principal?

It was actually his A.D. Wishing Mark all the best in his career. He had tremendous expectations placed on him coming here and it just did not work out. As much as I hate Mizzery, I hope he earns his degree and has a great college career.

I don't like Mizzo.
I don't care for CM.
I would boo Gordon and Snider if I had the chance,
I would boo Grayson Allen if I saw him buying coffee at Starbucks.

Can't say the same for Smith. He appears to be a good kid with a controlling parent. He has a history with Mizzo so I don't think his transfer there is a shot at the Illini. He wants to play at a P5 school close to home and I can't blame him. I wish him luck. By the time he is eligible we will be a much better program than Mizzo.

True to all. Unfortunately, Mark Smith didn't give our staff a chance to help him grow. Think he will regret this choice, wish him nothing but the best. BU did more than enough to get him there, he was not able to make the grade. Time for us to move forward, he did allow someone else to have a spot they could do something with. ;):illinois:

If leaving ILL was totally Mark Smith's decision, then according to those who post opinions, it was because Brad yelled at him and made him work hard. Well, what does he thing playing for Cuonzo is going to be like? As for Cuonzo, his greatest recruiting accomplishments are players he snatched from other teams. (The count is up to 4 now) If I'm a HS player, this does not cause me to want to go to Miznoz. As for the Braggin' Rights game, MS is not anywhere near as boo-able as Tilmon and Cuonzo. And now that Tilmon was a freshman flopperoo, not so much for him either. Actually, ILL fans should cheer for both Smith and Tilmon to be on the floor to rapidly pick up personals.

8 ppg on 56% shooting and 4 rpg in 19.5 mpg, for a true freshman big in a major conference is a flop?

Which of our non LB bigs would you have not traded for that stat line last year?

He Said:
“Takes a real man to pick on an 18-yr old for sticking close to home right after having one of the most disappointing years of his life”

What a difference a year makes. One year ago at this time Mark had completed a shocking and dominant year of high school hoops, was a recent Mr. Basketball and was trying to pick a scholarship among the flagship state school, Kentucky, Duke, and Michigan State, soon to be compared to Jason Kidd by his new coach.

Fast forward and he’s had a dismal year of basketball that seemed to hilight only his weaknesses, transferred schools, is now facing a sit-out year and will be booed by all the fans who used to profess love.

That can’t be much fun.

anyone else's mind go to... Did Cuonzo tamper with Smith while he was an Illini? IDK if probable but possible.

By “tamper,” do you mean take away his ability to drive and shoot? I wish that were the case.
