It was a bad loss and clearly way too early to make any broad pronouncements about this team, but I need some type of hypnosis or therapy to erase that last four minutes from my brain.
Nailed itI was surprised that BU didn't coach the last several minutes. It was almost as if he was saying - "Okay kid if you go win it then go win it. But if you don't we are going to have a whole lot of "Teachable moments" that we will go over and over and over between now and the next game." I've never seen BU as passive as he was last night and there had to be a reason for it. Chester is going to have some serious conversations with 5.
To be clear, I was already drinking beer. High Life, because WI. Just wanted a pretzel to go with it w/o walking through the arena and missing any of the game. 1st world problems…Honestly this is exactly what I would expect/hope for in Milwaukee.
While I somewhat agree with that a player can only take so much. The officiating was terrible. Couldn't believe they gave Illini a warning when he grabbed ball and tossed it to the ref when there wasn't a single player from Marquette near him, then later in the game they knocked the ball from Belos hand as he was grabbing it to take it out and the refs did nothing. I would have been T'd up on that one myself.Everyone can have a bad game but the worst thing Curbelo did all night was complain to the refs. He needs to just play ball and keep his trap shut.
Dude we all love the kid but his decision making is brutal. Period. No need to sugar coat it.
Hawkins seems to have caught the "whining" bug as well.Everyone can have a bad game but the worst thing Curbelo did all night was complain to the refs. He needs to just play ball and keep his trap shut.
And let's reserve judgment until we see 'belo and Kofi on the pick and roll starting with Cincinnati. But I wouldn't complain if 'belo didn't shoot another 3 pointer the entire season. He needs to develop more of the floater/teardrop arsenal, IMO.I keep reading about people who supposedly want Belo benched. Obviously, I think the issue last night was that he was not pulled from the game at some point to calm down and reset mentally. He was obviously struggling and trying to do too much. A 30 second blow may have helped him relax and get restart. Everyone knows he has potential to be a fantastic player and has shown that ability numerous times in only one season and 3 games. The issue is that the staff did not recognize or feel that a quick trip out of the game might help in my opinion. That, I believe, is what most are trying to say. I'd be shocked if anyone actually thinks a permanent benching is warranted.

Absolutely true about the blocks. Last year Kofi and, more so, Giorgi took those shot blockers out of the play.. Sometimes Giorgi would block two guys out.Overall, this is a horrible take that takes a stupid swipe at 20 year old kid in the 3rd game of a long season.
However, the part about things being Kofi post ups as opposed to non-Kofi post ups is spot on. But I would take it a step further and say that the blocks Marquette had, especially on Curbelo, can directly be tied to the ability to help off their man. If Kofi is there, no blocks.
This does not excuse what was a horrible night for Curbelo. But we probably win that by a minimum of 15 with Kofi.
Yep, and not that it is at all an excuse for the loss/terrible play, but some of those phantom foul calls (the one on CoHawk near the rim was particularly bad) were horrendous and were mostly going in one direction. It's one thing to not get the calls when on offense and take that as a green light to be able to be more physical on defense. It's an entirely different thing when you are facing physical defense that isn't being called for fouls while you're unable to play the same brand of defense without getting called for a foul for the same level/type of contact. While I somewhat agree with that a player can only take so much. Oh wow, I forgot about the Cohawk phantom foul. The guy just missed an uncontested dunk and the refs called a foul, unbelievable!Yep, and not that it is at all an excuse for the loss/terrible play, but some of those phantom foul calls (the one on CoHawk near the rim was particularly bad) were horrendous and were mostly going in one direction. My biggest concern is Curbelo seems like a guy who does things to get "notice me", rather than notice the team win. I fear he is more concerned with press clipping, high light videos and gifs for himself. It is a fine line between feeding ones own ego and being an aplha that can lead a team to its greatest potential. Curbelo is not a great outside threat, does not have the length nor the end to end speed of Ayo, nor his mid range game. Curbelo, I believe, feels like he has to make the flashy/spectacular pass to get the press/ink/video/gif. He is really pressing way to hard to do the spectacular which is all about HIM, not the team. He has to remember the name on the jersey. I hope he can do that. I love the kids passion, but it has to be passion for the team, and the team winning, not himself nor personal accolades. Those accolades come to the alpha by the leadership they show in allowing the team to be it's best.Hopefully staff gets him to realize that team doesn’t need him to be Ayo down the stretch for to win. He just needs to be the floor general, keep the offense moving, and take care of the ball. I think he’ll get there. If he doesn’t then team will struggle in close games and against pressure D all year.
Agree here...dissappointed in press conf too...where he really didn't seem to own the outcome. On no time out..."we practice that play all the time...". I was thinking to myself....there are probably alot of plays that were bungled last night that we "practice all the time".Yes I’m disappointed in Belo’s performance but what really surprised me is BU seemingly being out coached so badly. I would expect at least a time out to settle down, some in game adjustments, and better preparation from one of the higher paid coaches in the country.
Thanks. Well said.A guy had too much beer after the game….ran his mouth like an a-hole. Nothing bad happened. But when he woke up this morning, he kept running his mouth like an a-hole when he was sober. Guessing that means he is simply an a-hole.
So many on this board were all jacked up last night ripping Belo, BU, the rest of the team, the officials, etc….I kinda get that. Fans are vested and emotional.
It’s tomorrow…..your emotional excuse from last night lapsed.
BU has re-built this program into a force. Remember that. Belo stunk and will end the year and his career as an Illini great.
Be fans…..be passionate. But for the Love of God……it was a basketball game that was decided in the last seconds by a handful of extremely talented young men doing their best but not succeeding to your expectations.
There may well be a lurker or two on this board that played college ball at this level, but not many, if any.
There could be coaches on this board that have exceeded the accomplishments of BU, but I highly doubt it.
You, me, none of us is Illini basketball. We are simply fans, blessed to call them our own, and hope they are better than the rest.
Most nights they are, and like all of us, they will fail at times as well.
Imagine if tens of thousands of people were watching your every move when you were 19, 20, 22…and countless of those people were as vile to you as Illini Loyalty has been for the past 24 hours.
It’s a game and a bad loss and we will have more of these, but far fewer than the ones where we play great.
Move on with a new take……..
Ok, I get you basic point, but who are the “older guys” ? Trent did his job, DMW not so much. The only other older guy(s) are new to our system or lack significant playing time up to now. When you bench them, who steps up on the current roster?Curbelo is a special talent. We’ve seen that. BUT...
Talent without control is useless. Talent needs to be channeled in the right direction and in the larger context of team play.
The larger issue: This Illini team needs to learn how to play in big games and pressure situations. They are badly wanting in these areas and have been now for years. Yes, Ayo was great but overall this team hasn't handled this like a Top Ten team is supposed to.
Even with the ‘big’ lead the Illini had against Marquette, you had the sense that they were shaky and beatable. Marquette sensed this and exploited it. AND STILL, the lllini could have pulled this thing out at the end when they really had no business still having a chance to win at that point.
Someone is going to have to step forward and be the Alpha at crunch time. It might just be one of the younger dudes because the older players don’t seem to want that role. They've had years to prove they could do it and they just haven't except for Trent a few times.
This Illini team can still be good. But they have to become much more basketball savvy and much more ice in the veins.
And please... can someone learn how to handle the ball and the floor better? Sort of a basic skill for this game. And Kofi won’t help with this.
Again... more floor time for the young dudes and NOW. Coach wants to reward the older guys, but how about not if they aren’t getting the job done.
Curbelo didn't play THAT bad. Wasn't a big fan of his defense, stupid fouls were infuriating, needs to get back on D instead of whining to refs, and he had a few poor shot selections. I thought he did a good job getting the ball to bigs in the post and it ended poorly early on (different story with kofi) and I feel like that jaded him down the stretch. First time he got blocked there was a clear reach from behind (no call of course) and incidental contact that tripped him up and resulted in zero elevation at the rim. Second block was a clear path to the hoop and he was extremely close to getting it on the backboard before getting stuffed. I feel his eyes are elsewhere if kofi is lurking down there as well. He had a fair amount of drives where he got his shot off around the rim and they just didn't fall (not counting that terrible spinning layup attempt). Rewatching the game I was surprised how many attempts he took that I didn't hate, but he needs to realize when they are not falling he needs to facilitate more. Rewatching the tape I was surprised how many turnovers, or almost turnovers that just looked sloppy, should have been fouls. Again, he needs to realize he isn't getting calls and change his play in those instances. He had a bad game for sure, but it was not nearly as bad as he is getting blamed for. I was as mad as anyone watching it live with my heart, but watching it a second time and slowing some plays down it didn't seem nearly as bad.
