Marquette 71, Illinois 64 Postgame

Just want to add what was deserved and earned on the court tonight.
A serious tip of the cap to a wonderful group of basketball players and their coach who really, really know how to hoop.

I went back and watched the play where Ty kicked out vs open layup. It looks like he was crashing the board, thinking TSJ would go up with it, then TSJ dumps it off to him. He’s almost directly under the base of the rim when he catches it. He’s so open, he could easily jump out and lay in on left side - but I can see how catching it under the hoop, he made the quick decision to kick out to a wide open Domask. (Down 6, to a guy who has hit multiple threes).

Around this time last year, we looked quite good. Considering all the new pieces, we appeared to be WAY ahead of schedule. Now, as history would unfold, there was a massive !!!! storm brewing behind the scenes and we all know how things played out. I’d say right now, we are pretty close to what we were around the time of that Texas win. With that in mind, imagine this team getting better as the year goes on. This team could be a force come tourney time.
I just kinda think this core of guys is what they are at this point

CoHawk is awful, you keep expecting him to mature and stop making lackadaisical passes yet he’s still the same player. He really shouldn’t shoot threes it’s not his game. His defense was awful tonight as well.

Shannon didn’t seem like himself, otherwise we seemed to match up well with them. if we get a typical game from our best players it’s a different result

Probably my biggest disappointment tonight was the failure to recognize and exploit matchups on both sides.

I don’t know why we kept putting Domask on Jones or Kolek. He couldn’t stay in front of either and we got killed with the dribble penetration. Meanwhile Mitchell is just camped in the corner and we had Ty on him.

On the other end I didn’t think we exploited the Domask/Kolek matchup enough. That was just screaming for some booty ball and we didn’t attack it nearly enough.

On the flip side, they clearly had the Ighodaro/Coleman matchup down low circled. Many times when they needed a bucket they would just clear it out and hit that matchup. It usually worked.

I hope coaching staff learns from this. With our positional size we should be able to hunt matchups rather than have them hunted on us.

I agree mostly. Would have loved to see some ISO plays for Domask and let him back his guy down. Having said that, his defense is not ideal. Hard to play him and Goode together against athletic teams. This team really needs DGL to mature quickly.
We need Hawkins to get the mentality , confidence and ability to play smart like Brian Cook did. He has the ability but after 3 years I am not chucking that Kool aid anymore. We will have his moments but we need that on a consistent basis. I think TSJ and Domask are the only 2 I expect that from.

Pluses:
1. We were right there with the #4 ranked team
2. Goode finally got going
3. Shannon is improved from last year in all aspects
4. Our defensive rebounding was good in the first half
5. For a while in the second half we actually had pretty good ball and player movement in our half court offense
Minuses:
1. We lost
2. Dainja- not sure he can process what he needs to do out there to be an effective player- especially on defense
3. Freshmen who played looked very tentative- not playing freely
4. We are not deep so far
5. Harmon gave us nothing, same with Guerrier(who had a huge defensive error on fast break towards end of the game
6. Hawkins- if any better than last year- appears only marginally improved on offense and decision making
7. So many mental mistakes leading to turnovers in a veteran team
8. What was Ty thinking not taking that 1 foot layup/dunk?
Lol at Guerrier giving us nothing. He grabbed 11 rebounds!!

The RAC is a tough place to play, but Rutgers definitely looks like they've fallen off this year. I was worried about that game before the season started, but seeing both teams play, I now think we take it. FAU on the other hand is going to be a problem
It’s a crappy place to spectate. Half the seats are benches, it’s a death trap in a panic situation, and there are way too few toilets. And it’s ugly and it’s in New Jersey.

80'sIllini

Arizona
Our PG had 2 asts and 2 TO’s. Team had 8 asts/ 15 TO’s. Poor ball movement, poor shot selection = poor shooting %.
I can't remember when we've had a good team assist/turnover ratio- certainly seems like it hasn't happened this year even against lower-level competition. In our halfcourt offense- we never seem to be able to spring guys to penetrate into the lane and either pass out for an open three or a layup or dunk on a pass and besides TSJ- nobody is breaking down their defender to get into the lane although I think DGL is capable and Domask can back down a defender in the paint. Marquette kept screening Kolek's primary defender and getting one of our slower bigs on him and then he'd blow past for lane penetration and we couldn't stop it. Their ball and player movement on offense was pretty to watch and in stark contrast to what we displayed for about 30 minutes of the game.

Not sure I agree with this. If FAU turns out to be a top 10 or 25 team this year, I don't see it as a must sweep of those two teams. The Rutgers game is more important in terms of B1G standings and momentum, but if the Illini go 8-3 non conference at worst, then things will be fine. If Illini can split FAU and Tennessee games and avoid any other non-conference losses, 9-2 looks excellent for non-conference. Taking care of the other non-conference games, especially Bragging Rights is imperative.
I mean, I guess “must win” is too strong of wording. However, I’ll be disappointed if a potential Sweet Sixteen trip relies on us scoring big upsets, so I really want a good seed … and the Big Ten looks a bit down, so I really don’t want to have to rely on conference play for all of our Quad 1 wins!

CoHawk still telegraphing passes coming out of TOs, body language is really an issue. Got IQ'd to death tonight by Kulak, he sees plays developing before our guys even know what the hell is going on. Marquette is better than us right now. Subbing in Dainja at the 5 minute mark was a head scratcher.

I don’t understand…..

Last year, according to the staff, the offense bogged down because we had a few players who refused to run it.

This year, the troublemakers are gone. Staff has two of our guys dribble the clock away while the others stand and watch. Chuck up a long three and repeat. Maybe there was no offense to run?
We have the athletes.
What a waste of talent!!

the FAU game is a borderline must win imo. I don't see any way we win at Tennessee and I don't think there's gonna be that many opportunities in Big ten play. a lot of teams look bad.

Playing the # 4 ranked team that had 8 of their top 9 players from last year returning this year was to big a hill for us to climb.....we compounded our dilemma by missing so many layups and having way to many turnovers .....The terrible pass by TSJ that was 6-7 feet over Domask's hands was a turning point in the game to me.....So many turnovers so late in the game destroyed our momentum as we have been pretty successful in the last 10 minutes of the two games proceeding this game...........

The difference in made layups by each team should cause concern when reviewing the game film tomorrow............Marquette outscored us 21 -12 to end the game after we had the lead at 52-50...........

TSJ was off on his dribble drives to the rim numerous times tonight and Domask missed a wide open layup late also.......I wish Ty had made his wide open layup instead of throwing that over the shoulder pass for a 3.........a bucket then might have changed the rest of the game and allowed us to press the end bounds....................

Oh well , we knew we wouldn't go unbeaten this year but this game was winnable if we had just played with better passing and more BB IQ...
TSJ scored ok but if TSJ and Hawk turn the ball over like they did tonight and many games last year then we will lose those games. They had 10 turnovers and 5 assists isn't good. If fairness to TSJ he did give others open looks better than last year but guys gotta hit those looks. Hawk hit one and missed 4 but they were good looks. What is encouraging and what i do expect is Domask and Goode to hit hots and tonight they were 7 of 14. DGL or Quincy need to kick in some too I just don't expect Hawk, Ty or others to do it.

I still can't understand how a mobile guy the size of Hawkins still can't develop any sort of game inside 15 feet. He got four shots total from 2.

Two years ago there was literally talk of him going pro based on potential. Mobile big guy. Lots to work with. Well, he took that potential and really hasn't done much with it since.

Kinda reminds me of the disappointment I had with Efrem. Just seemed to plateau early. Efrem's plateau was substantially higher, but still the same feeling of opportunity lost.

Hawkins shoots it way too flat
Coleman is at 27% in his career from 3. Yes all of you are correct he cannot shoot the 3 and should never. It is a turnover equivalent. He plays decent defense occasionally. Good blocks. Then we see him being a matador or simply watching as a short shot is made.
I worry of him blowing up and hurting this team. We have the pieces and talent.

Gary A gave us nothing on the offensive end. Was hoping for a little production, he and Hawkins missed some wide open 3’s. why Hawkins won’t take the guys that he has in the paint and shoot over them, I Don’t know. A lot of time he has it there and is the best option to shoot but he passes out for a worse shot at the end of the clock. Plus he and Shannon’s passing left a lot to be desired tonight. A lack of a pg tonight did not lose us the game. Carelessness with passes was the main culprit plus not getting loose balls. Missed layups, no help defense or not getting back on d in the 1st half were killers.

No moral victories.

In saying that, we looked really good for the most part. Some really dumb mistakes and TSJ/Coleman did not have their best games.

Overall, this team is good enough to be a top 10 team this year. Some things to clean up for sure though

#125
I also think Coleman is being set up to fail a little bit. just putting too much on his shoulders. sure would have been nice to not have to have him make a play at the end of every shot clock. almost like we should have recruited a point guard.
Dude, this isn't last year. Domask and Shannon run things. Hawk is not forcing things like last year but come on. Domask had 0 turnovers and handled the ball much more than Hawkins did.
