Also on the timeout, basically never take one of those sort of three-dimensional thinking TO's without taking a breath first if you've got more than like 30 seconds. Just take a beat. That was a mistake in a moment of panic.

go back and re-read the pregame thread; most were thinking blow out double digit loss. i get it, we could and should of won this but if you can't see improvement compared with the last 2 weeks look again- defense played much better, even with the late melt down. we all need to temper our expectations and realize how big a hole this program was in when the new staff took over

I should be in bed. There is better football on tomorrow, and plenty of Miller Lite at the store...

Oh, and a one legged drunken grandpa could have run through our secondary tackles.

I mean, I’m disappointed and I wish we’d won, but I need to just give an awe-inspired shoutout to the terminally online Illinois football fans calling for Tony Petersen to be fired after 4 games. Somebody thinking that that’s a realistic event that will happen in the Illinois football universe is at a level of fandom intensity I’m just not ever gonna reach or understand. I’m glad you’re out there so none of the rest of us have to do it.

"to be fired after 4 games" or "to be fired, after 4 games"?

These are end of the season decisions of course but the guy was never anything other than a complete joke and never will be at this level. The resume isn't close, there are 15 of him just sitting around.

Sorry all. My Illinois fandom is officially finished. I’ve been a fan for over 30 years. This program has no hope and what I witnessed tonight and especially last week is an embarrassment. I’m going to see if I can sell my apparel on eBay if I’m lucky enough to find someone to buy it. Best wishes to you all.
Buh-bye

Sitting here in front of my puter , listening to Metallica loud(enter sandman album ) , enjoying a 420 and another gin and LL....and I'm still astounded we lost that game.......................
coaching F
defense B
offense D
spec teams B

Up 17-10 with less than 5 mins to go....4th and 1 in terp territory....YOU GOTTA GO FOR IT ......................
Last Illini O series was abysmal.....our own lineman sacked our qb...think bout that.......
BB called 2 timeouts in last 1:25 to save time for terps to snatch a road win........

I feel sick for the players....coaches, not at all

OC play calling was horrendous
BP's play was horrendous
play Art or Robinson or Johnson......anybody but bp

we can't afford to piss wins away like this......................

I don't post on this side, but I just suffered through watching the whole game about an hour behind. Hulu wouldn't let me skip commercials. And if I tried to fast forward between plays, it would randomly skip back to the previous commercial set which I'd have to watch.

With that in mind, I saw the following:

A team that wants to be known for its tough nosed running attack, have a 1st and 5 inside the 7, pass three straight times, unsuccessfully.

A team with nothing to lose, up 7, late in the 4th quarter, have 4th and 1 in Maryland territory, not go for it. Only to have their quarterback absolutely shred us, finding open receiver after open receiver.

With less than two minutes left, we get a first down, sack our own quarterback, panic call a timeout, get sacked again, then throw the ball to an offensive lineman which pushes us back even further. Now we are punting from the back of our end zone. The first play from our 45ish (did you guess a deep slant? So did everyone else) goes for a huge gain, game over.

We absolutely cannot get a receiver open. Whether it's scheme or skill or both, I don't know. Peters wasn't good but there were several balls that if the receiver had any space would have been an easy catch.

Few things... Peters should not see the field again this season unless two QB's get injured and we're down to third string (and probably not even then). That dumpster fire of an outing is unacceptable. Play Art or throw the playbook out the window and play Williams, anything but what I saw tonight. The offensive play calling was... offensive. If this weren't a first year staff someone would get fired for that performance. Coach B has some apologizing to do. In our section we jokingly agreed that punting on third and eight might be a solid call only to find ourselves third and 32 several penalties and sacks later. JAYZUZ-H-CHRISTOS MAN! It's one thing to not be able to pass for positive yardage, but can we all agree that perhaps we should limit the calls that repeatedly result in 10+ yard losses? We're the worst team in the B1G but that game was an embarrassment even by our standards. Congratulations Illinois football! There is now a level zero.

One of the best drives of the night, unfortunately in the wrong direction...

I am struggling to conceive how this loss could be on anyone other than Bielema. Our players are who they are at this point. Yet STILL, we had them right where we wanted them.

-We didn't go for it on 4th and 1 in Maryland territory with an eternity left on the clock.

-We ran a prevent defense with an eternity on the clock.

-We called timeout on 2nd and 21 deep in our own territory with 1 minute left in the game.

-We threw on 3rd and forever, saving Maryland a timeout and burying us deeper in our own end.

-We threw out whatever defense that was that resulted in a receiver WIDE OPEN in the middle of the field, setting up a chip shot field goal.

The last 5 minutes of the game, every bad decision that could be made, was.
This is called: Illinois doing Illinois things.

With what was just summarized, I’m especially concerned with how we come out next week against Purdue. We played a competent game for 55 minutes and then found the most irritating, soul crushing way to lose.

It’s always easier to get over a blowout loss (see Illinois post-UVA), but losing LIKE THAT, that can stick with a team.

This is the coaching staff’s biggest test. Two things I’ll be watching, how do they bounce back from the multitude of gaffes to end that game, and how well do they get the team ready to play in West Lafayette.

If we play competitive football next week, we are going in the right direction. The typical Illinois move would be to get blasted by at least 4 scores against a beatable foe. Here’s to hoping this coaching staff and players are different.
