Maryland 66, Illinois 63 Postgame

Right! Trent, DMFW and Giorgi didn't score, in part, because they didn't get shots.
I think DMW must have lost his confidence after missing a couple early, because he passed up a lot of good looks. When your best 3-pt shooter refuses to pull the trigger, that's not a whole lot better than him being cold.

If they did that and the triple team started leading to stripped balls, missed shots and charges, you’d be lamenting they kept trying to force it in. It’s hard to play shoulda coulda woulda.
But until they did that, why not keep feeding the big guy? I get when that starts to happen you have to adjust, but it didn’t.

BU needs to remind them that IU was up by what, 18 on UN, and had to hang on to win? We better be ready, we tend to give up runs far too often.

They didnt stop throwing Kofi the ball we had 4 guards on the floor and Maryland just matchup zoned us and played Ayo for the drive. How many times are we gonna run out our smallish limited skill guard lineup against teams with multiple 6'5+ skilled players . Marylands smallest starter is 6'5 and we played right into their hands . Scott was all over the floor helping not worried about Damonte for one second because he has no advantage over anyone in their lineup . If you Hawkins at the four now you have size that can actually challenge on the glass against smaller players forcing Scott to stop helping sop much.
That sounds like a gameplan or in-game adjustments. I don't think this team does that.

Kofi didn't attempt a shot in the last 8:21 of the game after dominating the whole night. Why did we not get him the ball? If the double comes he did a good job of dribbling out or passing out. We deserved to lose.
The last two times he got the ball they basically tripled teamed him and he got flustered. But they can’t stop looking for him.

Curbelo will be a star some day. this was not his best game.

He needs to get that some of that high school schtick wont play here.
He could be..but the only way he will become a "star" is to get the high school garbage out of game, and develop a shot. Right now, he does a couple of impressive passes, and combines that with a couple bad passes, bad shots, poor decisions etc....can't have that if this team is any good

What a perfectly wretched sports day this turned out to be. That last 5-minute stretch where Maryland tried to hand us the game and we ran nothing even remotely resembling an offense took about 3 years off my life...

Yeah this was a flashback to Weber ball.
We miss feliz a lot.

All the "they gave us their best shot"/"they played their best game of the season" people must have missed that part of the game

because it makes absolutely no sense to feed Kofi if he is more than 3 feet away from the basket . He doesn't have the skill or the IQ to do anything with it that far away. The size and length of Maryland disrupted our offensive passing lanes and they got hands on a lot of balls . That forced Kofi a step or two further away from the basket neutralizing him and because you had no other size on the floor those screens became less effective.

The better question is why hasn't BU been working on developing Hawkins as a high post 4 to make it easier to get Kofi the rock. The fact that he constantly keeps using Damonte in that situation is criminal.

And if you want to win a title, “one game” is literally everything. You don’t get a “one game.” I would think any fan who had the goal of winning the Big Ten (why wouldn’t we?!) is somewhat devastated right now, as he or she should be. :(
Exactly what I keep saying. Watching this team underperform is not like watching last year’s team. We aren’t just playing to finally get back to tourney. The minute ayo and Kofi announced their return the goal became win the B1G. Anything less than that will be a disappointment for this team. Doesn’t mean they were “bad” or the season didn’t have high points.

Games like this dampen that hope. Add that to Mizzou, Ohio, the first half of NU, and it’s not crazy for us to be frustrated.

This isn’t a “we’ll get ‘em next game, boys”
season.

I like Hawkins fine, not sure what people are seeing that all of a sudden he needs 20 minutes, or be a starter. He gets lost on d too often, moved off his spots and I like his shot but not sure its super reliable just yet. A couple more minutes would be good, but I think he might get exposed with extended time.

Curbelo absolutely needs a jumper to truly unlock things. It would change the congestion in the lane on his drives lately and make his passing deadlier and reduce the degree of difficulty he had tonight. As is that over penetration is not leading to positive outcomes nearly enough the past few games.

Ok we had an off night. We are still a top 4 big 10 team. Most teams have off nights in any sport. We will be fine.
True...but we really have match-up problems with teams that have length or a strong 4. We can run with just about anyone, but slow us down or throw a zone up and you get a game like tonight. Trent is so important to our offense and without any production from him we really struggle. Curbelo can't replace Trent in this offense.

I gotta disagree with some of the comments here. I didn't see a lack of effort..at least not compared to what we've seen in some other games. Just got beat by a team that probably has no business doing so. It happens in college basketball. On to the next one
No. No. No. Pride doesnt let you lose, at home, to that team. We have a pride problem

We lost this game at 59-56 when they had 5 possessions down the floor and didnt score and we had 4 and didnt score. They then came down and got a and 1 and we completely fell apart
We were ahead 61 to 59 at 2 min mark...we lost when they made a second chance 3 (Hart) with ~ 1:20 left. After that, we had no poise and missed our FTs. Credit to Terps...they played tough defense and had poise down stretch.

For us...only 9 turnovers, won rebound battle... but we lost 3P and FT battle.

If Kofi could pass out of the double/triple team when he doesn’t have position, he had Miller open several times and either fumble passed or chose not to pass. As dominant as he was/is, he has to become a better facilitator for us to have balanced scoring. This Ayo/Kofi game will not win every game.
Also, anyone that thinks we will win B1G games with Trent and/or DMFW on the bench for large portions of the game is absolutely kidding themselves.

Belo is a great spark to spell Trent or Ace, but he’s not ready for prime time just yet. Same with CoHawk.

That was one of the worst displays of passing, by both teams, that I have ever seen in my life. We lost to a team that had 8 assists, barely took any shots at the rim, and lived off 15-foot jump shots. That is the definition of losing basketball, and we lost to that team.
Why? They blocked our weak drives to the hoop 7 times (when we should have passed to a teammate). They shot 5 more free throws than us (and made 6 more than us), which is especially odd considering they weren't aggressive driving to the hoop in half court or transition-- and we had a massive interior advantage with Kofi. And perhaps most of all uncanny, boneheaded plays at the most inopportune times. 2 missed free throws by Damonte, a turnover where the ball sllps out of Ayo's hand at the top of the key, an airballed 5 foot runner from Ayo, Kofi's failure to snag a rebound that practically hit him in the shoulder but instead is slapped out to Maryland who hits a 3 pointer....

Curbelo, what happened tonight?
Ummm you mean Trent, DaMonte, Giorgi, and Grandison.... ? Neither scored a point! DaMonte and Frazier both had 5 assist but you gotta do something on the offensive end. This can't happen... Coleman Hawkins scored and played barely at all... come on now...

Yes we had only 9 turnovers, but the Terps blocked 7 shots I believe down low. Most of the blocks were against our guards. They took away the driving lanes against us better than any team this year. Many of those blocks/misses down low were the same as turnovers.
