And Morez is right, too. They got used to easy looks against Iowa and kept trying to do that stuff. Once things get tough, we kind of wilt.Maryland is just a tough matchup for this Illini team. They are so big and athletic inside, have good, tough guards, and hit the 3 at 37+% (31st in the country). Pack it in, they'll scorch you from the arc and if you can't match up one-on-one with Reese and Queen, they'll just pound you inside.
On defense, they are top 50 in most categories except (surprisingly) rebounding (59th). They are 14th in turnovers forced, 16th in turnover margin, 25th in 3-point defense, 45th in blocked shots and 40th in scoring defense. Last night was just a perfect storm of a very good Maryland team and a poor all-around performance by the Illini, who had a deer-in-the-headlights look almost from the start.
I worry more about the individual matchups even more than how high the opponent is seeded. Thankfully, there are just a handful of teams built like Maryland. Their lack of depth may be the one thing that prevents them from a FF run.
He is the CEO and responsible for all of it, including the lack of defense. Things might have been a little different had the team stayed healthy during the B1G season and gained more valuable experience, but he is responsible for building this roster. A lot of good moments, but this team will not make it past the first weekend once again, IMO.Makes my blood boil when Brad credits opposition experience versus our youth for game results. It was his decison to go young when he should have followed last years blueprint.Overseas players have skill but where is the DAWG? Poor roster construction the big problem.
Slightly, but funny.
True. Our guards and wings were physically stronger and could get to any spot they wanted against Iowa. The reverse was true last night. Morez was right; instead of that inside-out game that is so effective and even helps the 3-point looks, last night we spent a lot of time going side to side and then just launching a 3. Maryland's toughness defensively had something to do with that, but so did our decision-making. Boswell is strong and when he got downhill, he made 6 of 9. But he also settled for 7 3's and made none. The only guy that seemed to play his normal, good offensive game was Will...and even he missed two or three close-in shots he normally makes. Constant defensive pressure takes a toll. And Morez is right, too. They got used to easy looks against Iowa and kept trying to do that stuff. Once things get tough, we kind of wilt.

I'm with you here. If we win a game in the tourney, that's probably as far as we can go. And I wouldn't be surprised at all if we get pantsed in the first round. He is the CEO and responsible for all of it, including the lack of defense. This probably played some part in the loss, but we weren’t beating MD the way they played last night. I still think we lose by 15+ even if we had equal restThis might have been talked about last night. Each team that played Thursday on Friday looked sluggish and missed a lot of open shots. My take. Go Illini and get rest and practice defense.
This where I’m at. We have a lot of holes to fill for next year: 1) speed/athleticism, 2) shooting, and 3) more frontcourt options. There are no positives with this loss. Illinois is who they are. They are an average team that cannot compete with elite bigs, but with the right draw might get lucky. I have zero expectations going into next week.
It just amazes me how many times our guards are trailing the man they are guarding. It makes us look slow, but I don't know if it's that we are slow, out of position or the way we play defense. I just think something needs to change with our defense. This where I’m at. We have a lot of holes to fill for next year: 1) speed/athleticism, 2) shooting, and 3) more frontcourt options.
Kylan Boswell is a better defender than Ty. Even on taller players. Ty was good but he couldn't defend quicker gaurds. They ate him alive. Our team has been fun to watch this season, lots of rebounding and scoring until we run into a strong team like Maryland or Duke. Watching the BTT games the past 2 nights makes it clear our team has not learned how to play solid defense. The strongest teams in the conference play defense and are more physical than our Illini. The Iowa victory reinforced bad habits of not defending the shooters.
Maryland might be the strongest team in the conference, but I’m not sure any B1G teams will get to San Antonio. We will probably have a chance to win 1 game before we run into a wall in the NCAA tournament.
Given the high turnover of players it’s been a fun team to watch and develop. We could have used Ty Rodgers on defense to shut down the leading scorer of opponents because Kylan Boswell tried that role but doesn’t have the size needed.
Hope we have some key players returning next season.
Just weighed her. Lucky for her, she weighs more than a duck.
What a job BU has done where a top 20 KenPom finish is a forgettable season.I'm with you here. If we win a game in the tourney, that's probably as far as we can go. And I wouldn't be surprised at all if we get pantsed in the first round.
On the whole, this team has been mostly disappointing. There were a few nice moments - beating Miznoz, beating mediocre IU and Iowa teams. But mostly, it's been a season to forget. A lot of potential unrealized, things just never came together. Never could seem to get all five starters clicking at once (counting Riley as the fifth starter here).
I've seen the same things over and over. Poor PnR defense, no adjustments, too much one on one offense. Really need to maintain this level of recruiting but bolster the staff with high basketball IQ assistants on both sides of the ball.
Seriously. When we play defense, our guards actually DO get screened at least half the time, setting up a brief 2 on 1 situation that leads to easy baskets. It so painful to watch over and over again. The "contest from behind" strategy, or whatever you want to call it, does not seem to be working well... I would have canned it a long time ago.It just amazes me how many times our guards are trailing the man they are guarding. Congrats!Getting woken up every 15-30 minutes with nurses coming in to check on the wife/baby was more fun than watching the game. At least no more distractions this weekend and we will be home in time for the big tourney tip off.
Our success in the NCAA tournament will depend solely on matchups. If we face a team with two physical inside bigs, we’re probably not going to win. More traditional lineups will be to our favor and we have the talent to match. However, we do not have the experience. The Big Dance is a whole ‘nother level when it comes to pressure. Having been through those wars once or twice before certainly is a plus. I believe only Boswell and DGL have been there before. What a job BU has done where a top 20 KenPom finish is a forgettable season.
This year we beat #18 Wisconsin, #21 Mizzou, #23 Oregon by 32, @ Indiana by 25, @ #22 Michigan by 20, and another win against #20 Purdue.
Sure, when we went through a stretch where we were missing a starter or two each game, we lost a few ugly ones, but I don’t see this as a throw away season. More Quad1 wins in the regular season this year than last year.
What a clown postI'm embarrassed. So much money, so little effort. Lose to a better team, but at least fight....Shades of Groce.
Every player you mentioned except Ty were 4th or 5th year seniors. That's a bit of a difference between the mostly 18 and 19 year old team we have now. Far more physically and mentally mature.Did they really have a "come to Jesus" moment or was it just a false peak with 4 straight good matchups for them against pretty soft teams.
They got Iowa twice, Iowa is soft and unathletic and their best interior player missed both games. Michigans guards are soft and unathletic, Wolf has looked awful the last month, and Vlad doesn't move much, and Purdue only has two good players in Smith and TKR and they lack both size and athleticism yet they still controlled the game until the end.
I think the truth about this Illini team is that they are soft, unathletic, and don't shoot well enough or play smart enough to make up for those deficiencies. They do have good size and length and are able to exploit that in certain matchups like Iowa.
Last years team had actual leaders in Shannon and Domask and they physically bullied nearly everyone with size and athleticism (Shannon was a freak but Guerrier, Ty, and Coleman all were plus athletes, Domask wasn't super explosive but was smart, had good size, and was strong). Who on this years team is a plus athlete?
