Or is the point of no AAU more that the speed and skill of those players is higher than high school and even if they don't play intense defense, playing against bigger stronger players is what is requiring an adjustment?

Yeah!

I'm a little confused/surprised by all of the mentions that Mark Smith's weak point is defense and the suggestion that he is behind because he didn't play AAU. I have the impression . . . no personal knowledge at all . . . that nobody in AAU plays defense anyway. So, did that really hurt him?

Not only was he missing AAU, but baseball was his number 1 priority. Was he really fully committed to basketball and practice/learning? Probably not as much as a guy who's number one goal is to be the best basketball player he can be, and earn a college scholarship or even get to the NBA.

Agreed. Last year’s team was only 1 or 2 wins from making the dance. Hit .500 in conference and we’re likely in. Would need a couple signature wins along the way, as well.

By your criteria and our schedule we would have to have both Minny and the Purdue games as our signatures winnable games left. An Ohio State win wouldn't hurt and then we got a chance at 500 in conference, because we will inevitably lose to someone that none of us think we should.:chief:

That's a misconception. Defense at many AAU tournaments is very intense. At the showcase tournaments you see a lot more individualistic, selfish plays on offense and much less team ball, but defense is pretty good.

Good article from Rob. I think Damonte's typical instinct (of not inbounding to the corner) got the best of him. In this particular situation it would have been fine to inbound to Mark.

Live and learn.

Looking at that in slow motion, I cant believe how high Alstork got up for that dunk.

Does anyone else think kipper gave him a little boost?

He'd got higher if the darn backboard hadn't got in the way of his head...

If kipper hadn't got in way, or alstork hadn't got in the way, depending on how you look at it, the roof of the Assembly hall would of came off and we'd all be thinking the Illini have arrived. They were playing to win, it didn't happen, but the mentality was there, and I'm looking forward to great things. :chief:

I just read this. Why oh why didn’t damonte pass to alstork???? He was wide open...(banging my head against the table)

See post #379. All your life you're taught not to inbound to the corner against a double team. EXCEPT in this situation where you want to get fouled or just run clock it's the worst thing you can do. If Kipper would have gone for the over the shoulder reception instead of the box out it would have turned out fine. Al that was needed was someone to touch the ball at either end of the court. Just a perfect storm of circumstances to lose that game. What we did was almost impossible.
