Maryland 92, Illinois 91 OT POSTGAME

Here is how things I see to date:
1. Kipper and Black need to stop turning the ball over. They are both doing some nice things, but turnovers have ramped up the last three games and not necessarily because of increased pressure.
2. Te'jon, Frazier and Damonte have to back off the three-point shooting. None of the three has proven to be very proficient at it at this time, but Frazier has a ton of attempts for a guy with shooting as poorly from the perimeter as he is.
3. That being said, they need to figure out how to get more shots for Kipper and Jordan from beyond the arc. They are definitely our best threats from out there and don't get enough shots from deep.
4. I would like to see the guys who can make free throws in the game late when it matters. Te'jon has shown over the last 1 1/2 years that he isn't that guy, and Frazier and Damonte don't appear to be those guys yet, either. Smith, while he might struggle in other aspects right now, is a great free throw shooter.

Kipper seems to go out of the flow on offense too much and that is when he turns the ball over. I like his aggressive nature, but I see him trying to do too much too often. Te'jon has made some bad mistakes late. He seems to hell bent on being "the man" late in games. I like that he is willing to be aggressive late but needs to use his head a little more.

The players are still learning the system. It will come and there is plenty of talent. They just need to relax some and stay within the system. We've seen glimpses and when it starts to click for more players for extended periods of time, it is going to be fun. Especially with the way they're playing defense.

not sure what you do for a living - but in the corporate world (and coaching P5 bball is just as corporate as anything) - if you don't know how to manage expectations, you're not going to last very long.

I'm not sure Te'jon is the best decision maker at the end of games, either. The forced drive at the end of the NW game, and the incredibly stupid alley oop attempt with about 45+ seconds in regulation when he should of pulled it out and ran clock or got fouled are plays a floor leader can't make at the end of the game.

Kipper and Black are both indecisive when the receive the ball. This offense will click when our post players understand they have to shoot or pass within a 2 or 3 count....not dribble, dribble, head fake, stop, turn, head fake, stop, then pass or shoot. In their defense our cuts and movement are not quick and precise yet, so several times they are left holding the ball with bad options.

Strides were made in the second half of this game. They will get there.:illinois:

I understand the officials missing calls, I understand the human element, that's partially what makes the game great. But you HAVE to make the blatantly obvious calls. in a close game every point matters...

and goaltending should be a reviewable play, its ridiculous its not!

I'm not sure exactly what he said. But if he wasn't confident, he should've at least said something along the lines of "we're not there yet, but I think we'll improve as the season gets going and the body of work by the end of season should show we're worthy" And then it's on us to read between the tea leaves.

If he said straight up that they're a tournament team, then you have to take that to mean he thinks they're a tournament team now.

It's managing expectations appropriately - you just have to do it.

I believe BU said "we have tournament-level talent." I would consider that appropriately managing expectations. We will be scary once our execution catches up with our talent.

If that's what he said, I agree. To me that's saying essentially "The pieces are there, but they haven't come together yet, and we will need that to happen for us to be a tourney team".

If people are reading that as "we're a tournament team", then I think you're ahead of where BU is.

I personally think we're 50/50. In my opinion, on paper we could be a tournament team, but not should. Our lack of size underneath, particularly on the defensive end (where we're not making up for it in mobility), is the biggest detractor. We're gonna need to come together in a big way as a team to make up for that. I think last night was a step in that direction. Hopefully we can keep making more!

If we can and are suppose to read between the lines or tea leaves...then don't you think the players could do that as well??? Wouldn't do much for team morale and expectations

Some freshman played GREAT, Williams/Frazier played very well. Smith once again struggled. Tejon made a bone head play with 30 sec left, but that did not cost us the game.

I argue that it did cost us the game. Had he pulled up and run some clock we would have likely been shooting free throws with less time on the clock. I blame Alstork as much as Tejon though. A 5th year senior should not have been calling for an alley oop in that situation. Granted there were others plays that cost us too but this one absolutely cost us.

Actually what l believe he said was this was the most talented team he has ever had

People can rip on the failed ally oop all you want, but I want my team playing to win and kick butt. Playing "not to Lose" is a recipe for failure. Attack, attack, and attack, are the three rules for war.. TJL was attacking. We might of lost this battle, but attacking is how you win the war.:chief:

yeah but there are right and wrong ways to attack. An ooop to mark alstork is not one of the right ways...

If he had drawn the defender and hit alstork with a bounce pass for the layup, that would have been an example of the right way.

If when we play purdue we have that same type of situation and Trent Frazier tries to dunk on Isaac haas, I wont be like "well he was attacking" LOL

If there's any debate about the foul, you can simply refer to how Alstork responded after the call. He was smacking his temples while grimacing. He knew he had made a costly mistake at the end there.

I don't hold it against him. He tried to make up for letting Cowan get by him. Shouldn't have even gotten to that point. We had earlier opportunities to put the game away.

one pass away

Malcolm Hill was one of the best to ever put on an Illini jersey, and he struggled just as much as a freshman, if not more than Smith is right now. That's really all that needs to be said. Smith will be fine.

Didn't watch the game live. DVR'd it instead. Just watched the second half and OT today.

Really not much to add to what has already been said. An amazing comeback in the second half gives me hope for this team down the road. Lots of "what-ifs" during the last 5 minutes of the game and the OT. Game could have easily gone our way if we were a little more under control at the end. But, I suppose that Maryland could also say that it should never have gone to overtime if they had played better down the stretch.

I am excited about this team and its future potential. And, as others have said, it is a lot more fun to watch than Groce-ball.

For those wanting to change the starting lineup, look back at the past couple weeks of games. Tejon has been better in some, Frazier in others. Finke better in some, Kipper in others. Alstork better in some, Smith in others. The only consistent guys have been AJ, Black, and Damonte IMO. No need to change the starting lineup IMO. Let everyone play in the first 25 minutes. Let the best 5 play the last 15 (except for the occasional breather).

If your coach saying the team has tourney talent but still needs to make progress to make it there negatively impacts morale/expectations, then I don't think BU wants those players on his team (and neither would I). That should do exactly the opposite.

It's a fine line - but part of the job is to manage it.

Smith -25 point diff. and Finke -20 ponts in first half. Kipper kept us afloat first half.

Smith should be coming off the bench to gain confidence just like the rest of the Freshman. Too much pressure has been put on him.

If I was BU I would print out the final score and a picture of Marylands point guard smirking from TV at the end of regulation over the enterence to the locker room and keep it there for the rest of the season
