When I used to coach, I taught my guys with NO timeouts, rather than take a 5 second call, throw it off the guy guarding the inbounder. That’s pretty simple, right?

What if it you miss? What if it hits him and then hits you? You're still under your own basket with seconds remaining. Getting it out of that area entirely is the lowest-risk move.

Last year after 18 games, OSU was 10-8 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Then they started to click. Let's see where the Illini is after 18 games. That would be after our 5th B1G game, and we may very well be 0-5. Next three conf games are at Minny, At Mich and home vs Iowa...

We're going to lose @ Minny and @ Michigan. But if we can't beat Iowa at home, we're in for a long, long season.

I thought the defender may have been a bit away from the end line. Hard to throw it against his back and recover it if he's 7 or 8 feet from the baseline. I thought we set up too deep in the back court to start the play, giving MD too much time to recover and too much room to sag off the stack.

I'd have to watch it again. Still no reason you can't inbound the ball. That's big boy basketball. We need to be able to do that.

Ebo deserves more playing time. He made some sort of positive play on defense every position he was out there. I dont care how offensively raw he is, he's a great asset to have.

This is one of those games that has me waking up with a knot feeling in my stomach still.

On the contrary, I feel better about it today than I did last night. The first half was basically how I envisioned the entire game going and then to see them come out and battle back and all but beat an upper echelon B1G team has really made me rethink this team's potential. Tough loss. Shoulda won. But overall I think the meter is pointing up.

He (Huerter) was - he started with his back to the throw looking to cut off the first cutter (Alstork). He then doubled Alstork in the corner, turned and jumped to try to block the pass and ended up a foot over the baseline - hmm. By the time the 5 secs got close - Huerter was right in front of him but he didn't start there so DaMonte may have not noticed him getting close.

It's just gonna happen one night. It's going to click, and when it does we will all be up out of our seats like the second half last night.

It's going to click...just a matter of time, and effort.:illinois:

I am coming to the realization (and I hope I am wrong) that Finke just isn't as good as we think/need him to be. Looks like he has heavy feet on defense and will struggle to defend any good bigs. He is showing some flashes of getting the job done, but is not any where near where we need him to be. I hope we go small and play Black and the 5 and Kipper at the "4". I want to see what Jordan can do as a starter and maybe coming off the bench would help Mark Smith get going again.

1. Lucas
2. Alstork
3. Jordan
4. Kipper
5. Black

I'm not as down on Finke as some on here. He does need help on defense, that's a liability, but he is getting nastier on offense. He's our only big that consistently will attack and throw it down. Black only seems to get nasty when it's a loose ball or skirmish. He needs to channel his goofy aggression or whatever to attacking the basket. He was hitting his fade away last night, but when he isn't, he's not much help.

Trent showed me last night that he is at least s good as Lucas running the offense and on defense. What he did better last night was rebound, (a couple of huge ones late) and play with more energy. He's just a freshman. He is ahead of where TJL was and I feel like going forward Trent will have a bigger role.

TJL is solid and has played really well at times, but I think he may be best suited as the role player off the bench while Trent grows in this offense.

There's going to be a new 5 on Wednesday, I'd bet my beach house stocked with soilid gold bars on it.

If I am BU: Frazier, Damonte, AJ, Kipper, Black:illinois:

Trent really impressed me last night. He does not look afraid of B1G competition. That coast to coast layup with the eurostep finish reminded me so much of Dee.

Frazier is quick, and you can see the game is slowing down for him already (only 9 games into his Fr season). The talent and potential is obvious.

+100. From kids just walking on campus a few months ago, to starting practice weeks ago, new system, losing to EIU, privately thinking we might win only 14 games, and already playing toe to toe with NW and Maryland, the growth is astounding to me. I am so impressed with the kids, and with Coach BU.

Keep up the good work guys, and keep your heads up.

Yeah I was definitely frustrated with how we lost but like a lot of posters said this is a game we lose by 25+ last year.

My goodness. This thread is crazy. There was so much improvement in offensive sets in OT from just 2 days ago. I am walking away from this a lot less angry than everyone else

Same here. There is a lot going against this team. Youth, inexperience, holes in the roster, key players under performing, really poor outside shooting, and not to mention some egregiously bad officiating. And yet we've taken these games down to the wire.

We also have to remember that we had only 7 games prior to NW and MD this year with only 1 P5 opponent. Normally we would have 13 games with usually about 4 tough games prior to the start of the B1G schedule.

Last night was crazy fun, and also heartbreaking.

It's easier to stomach blowing the game on aggressive plays and freshman mistakes rather than blowing it by taking the air out of the ball and killing momentum, though.

I believe in this team, especially since they're just getting started and have 2 full years together (with the exception of the Alstork/Ayo swap).

Can't wait to keep watching. The wins will come.

Agree - also - apparently you can now try to block the pass by jumping out of bounds at the passer - check out Huerter during that pass - he almost lands on DaMonte - we get called if our hands wander across the imaginary baseline - Huerter gets to almost mug DaMonte.

Experience will tell him to fake a pass and let the defender hit the ball WHILE STILL IN THE PASSER's hands. That iirc is a technical every ref will be forced to call. If they don't, I guarantee they will hear about it from the head of referees, and they will not like that call :D

I Was not watching that part of the play, but if true refs should have issued a warning. Go back to Nanna and his multiple warnings and technicals.

#271
From my understanding as a ref years ago, the ball has to be touched within bounds by 5 seconds. If at 3 seconds a high lob happens but no one touches the ball by 5 seconds, the ball is awarded to the other team.

So a fairly quick decision is necessary to ensure a touch in bounds within 5 seconds. Monte made the correct decision, just a bad throw.

I can see this team getting better by the game, a work in progress. Good work Coach.

keep on truckin

Rule was changed several years ago. The ball only has to leave the inbounder's hand within five seconds

The future is bright. A year from now we win each of the last three games, probably easily. But as I said before, freshmen gonna freshmen. It's fun to watch their progression, though.

So many opportunities to finish this game. Bad timeout/bad alley OOP/bad in-bounds pass/bad screen out/bad free throw shooting/bad defensive positioning at the end of the game. That being said, we are gritty, fiercely competitive, and I feel we have a chance to win against every team we play this season!!!!!! I didn’t feel that way last year.

Agree 100%. The difference between this year’s and last is night and day. Last year down by 22, we would’ve quit and lost by 35. Then in the post game we’d hear every cliché in the book from Groce. So refreshing to see both the disappointment and the anger from BU, AJ, and Alstork. I’m convinced we won’t make many of these same mistakes again.

Ditto on AJ and Alstork at the postgame. Those two are getting tired of losing close games. They are going to hold their teammates accountable moving forward. Leaders need to step forward; looks like they're getting ready to.

The important thing to note is BU is completely fine with sitting anyone who isn't playing well. It doesn't matter who starts. There will be games when each of the guys you listed is the best player, and BU will keep that guy on the court.

THIS is one of the things I love about BU, Which is diametrically opposed to what Groce did. He goes with who is performing at that moment and not a set substitution pattern. That’s a very refreshing difference.
