Maryland 92, Illinois 91 OT POSTGAME

#201
The first several minutes of a scoreless game, in which Maryland went 8-0, would like to talk to you. Maybe you can invite Frazier's girlfriend and parents
actually the later part of first half was a bigger bust than that run. Whatever BU did at halftime,.... he probably needs to try before tipoff. But we need to get him some protective gloves for his fists and there probably is a wall or locker that needs repaired too.

Me too. Immediately afterwards, I was obviously frustrated and did a lap around my house. But while that game was one we could/should have had, Illini basketball is fun again, there's a resiliency there, we have a system, and have shown obvious improvement overall.

I'm still pissed, but this is a good way of looking at things.

Thanks for the simplicity and positive view . . . which is also probably right.
I admit that I'm only hurt because I finally have hopes again

Then tell the forum why Smith is not playin and his D was on point toinifht, no foul trouble, was with the group that cut it to 10pts and everyone else got beat backdoor and on rebounds and never sat...they don't even give him a chance even if Smith makes a mistake....

He is just not a Smith fan and that happens bad marriages ... I'm sure Smith and his family will have talks over break if this keeps up....he's too talented not to be given a chance..

BU gets so excited about Smith everytime he gets asked a question about him. You do realize you're the only one on this forum thinking he should play more right? Try to watch a game without the Smith bias.

I wish these games were in January like they normally would be. This team is obviously not quite ready to pull these games out. The thing is if the inbounds play went well and they made free throws, everyone would be gushing on how this team would over achieve. They went toe to toe with a talented team. It hurts to watch these growing pains but this team is learning valuable lessons that will pay off later this year. We all knew this would be an up and down year, hopefully the downs this week will lead to ups later. This team continues to improve, I can't wait to see how much better they are by January.

We totally gave away 2 B1G wins, we have to learn how to finish.

I'm not going to sound like a broken record on being thin in the frontcourt and needing to upgrade talent, but rather offer a few thoughts and suggestions:

1) I just love how Damonte plays the game. He is one jumpshot away from being a really complete college player, and even in his jumpshot, he has great form. Probably the most freshman potential on current team.

2) I'd start Frazier and Damonte at PG/SG. We obviously need a little shake-up and it seems that Smith is tentative to start games and get into a flow, often picking up early fouls. Maybe too much emotional pressure.

3) We need Ebo THIS year. Finke has a good shot, but continues to play too soft IMO. Start strong with Black and Ebo to set an aggressive attitude on the boards. Then bring Finke off the bench.

4) Major kudos to AJ, I watched him since HS and my personal opinion was that he needs to develop the mental toughness to assert himself in games. Not just wait to do something good when the ball gets to him, but assert himself, be aggressive, take over. I remember saying that to his dad over PM during his senior year in HS, and Rob responding that this is indeed something that AJ has to figure out himself. It seems he never reached that comfort zone in his first two years under the old staff, yet he is mentally a totally different player this year and getting better, so honest congrats to him.

That was a fired up basketball team in the second half. Gritty. Gutty. We survived Weberball, we overcame Groceball. Let's all embrace this. This isn't mock funerals and derp face. This isn't wristbands and ladders.

This is different.:illinois:

Wow. You're in your own world. Mark Smith was a part of a rotation that played incredibly poorly in the first half. Mark missed at least one defensive rotation really badly that lead to dunk. Certain guys in the second half really played well and I agree with Brad that it was better to let those guys continue to than see if one of the freshman could turn it around. Mark went for 21/3/3 in one of earlier games. He is not in Underwood's doghouse. He is just a freshman in his SECOND full year of only focusing on basketball. Give me a break

That's laughable

BU said it in the press conf.

It is what it is... just not a good fit for BUs system

I sure hope Mark doesn’t give up as easily as you do. He’ll be fine, just a rough stretch in the fall of his freshman year. Not the big deal you’re making it out to be.

I still can't believe Underwood took a timeout to draw up that last play at end of regulation. Who draws up a play like that with all your guys 40 feet away from the inbounder, WHO CAN"T RUN THE BASELINE???? You could just see the impending result coming. Crazy.

Interesting. Maybe it's optics because I feel much better about Trent shooting it. Te'jon 1 made 3pter.

True, he has more 3 makes than TJL.....but he's also taken almost 4x the attempts this year.

TJL also went 38% from 3 last year...I think Trent is a better shooter, just not really showing it yet.

#215
and your point is??? This team, tonight, looked better with TF. Last game, TJL looked better. I don't need either of them shooting a bunch of 3s. I need them to run the team to the point that the team scores and is in position to win at the end of the game. I want a coaching staff that is willing to sit players and play players based on the now, not on the past. Earn each minute, appreciate each minute, and we will have a TEAM that is tough to beat.

my point was that the reason Frazier may be better isn't bc of 3 pointers as the poster I was responding to was only mentioning shooting. I said nothing about Trent getting more or less PT.

the person I was responding to seemed to get the point at least per their follow up reply

Think you just have to chalk this one up to inexperience. Great heart to come back from being 20+ down but bone-head mistakes lost this in the end. This team is growing in leaps and bounds and I am very excited to see what is in store next. Not going to be world-beaters this year but it is going to be a fun ride.

Haven't read the whole thread, but if anyone is blaming Damonte on that inbounds, you're wrong. He is the last person to blame. Staff should've saved a TO and should've drawn up a better play.

And Damonte did the right thing. With no timeouts and nobody open, just heave it to the furthest person down the court. He through a catch-able ball, Kipper needed to judge it better and at least get a touch on it so the ball wouldn't go back to under our basket.

100% correct!!

The Coach Underwood postgame interview on the radio was interesting. He made the comment that the 5 players who started tonight, had a -22 in the Northwestern game. He followed that up with saying that he should have made a change prior to this game. He said that was his mistake.

You will also take note that for the first time this year, the 5 who started the second half, were not the 5 who started the game. It does matter who starts, saying otherwise is an easy out for a coach. Coach Underwood is going to make a change.

The fact that most of us cared till the end is telling enough. This is the first year in about 15 that I've kept my eyes and ears on entire broadcasts. BU is shaping a team into something special. Groce team 22 down at half woulda lost by 50...and that's with Groce playing upperclassmen. We will be finer and we will win.

Trent isn't exactly helping us there either. He's 4/29......

Which is odd considering he had a reputation of being a sharp-shooter coming out of HS.

We need a few things fixed if we have any prayer this season.

We MUST shoot better from the perimeter.

Mark Smith MUST figure it out.

And we need more from Michael Finke.

I'm encouraged by a lot of what has happened, but those three things are really holding us back from winning these close games.

It looks like this team is going to make every mistake at least once before figuring it out. Time to dial down those expectations a bit in Underwood's first year. We play a lot of freshmen and guys who aren't used to winning competitive games, and it shows.

Ok....lol

He was ONLY a third team All American and was ONLY drafted in the second round huh?

And who on this team is going to be a third team All American and an NBA draftee this year?

I'll wait for that answer.

Yeah.....we are not going to be as good as Oklahoma State was last year.

The PG position is the most important position on the floor, and they had one of the very best in all of college basketball. They were more experienced than us, and while perhaps not as talented ON PAPER, the combination of Evans with the experience they had beats what we have.

Oh, and another thing. The Big XII is a run-and-gun conference. Underwood's up tempo, fast-paced offense excels in a conference not known for lock-down defense. The B1G is a different experience altogether. I trust Underwood to figure it out, but this is apples and oranges.

Don't need one this year. The TEAM is more athletic and deeper.

You put Evans in the hall of fame and while good he is not such a difference maker to mean Illini will not be better than the Cowboys.
