Mascot for University of Illinois?

You're all smoking something funny if you think the liberal crowd at UIUC is going to let the first republican president be our mascot.

Plus he's a man, so not gender neutral, thus offending half the crowd.

Plus having a caricature of a fallen president would either be silly or demeaning, something which Barb has promised we will not see.

Plus with a head that size (offending macrocepalics everywhere), where would honest Abe take a leak? We would have to install special big head bathrooms.

Yeah, I don't see us being able to have anything based on non-fictional characters as a mascot. I think abe and anything related to soldiers is/should be out. I wouldn't want to see a caricature of one of our most famous presidents or of our military service men and women as a mascot. I think we're almost assuredly going to be stuck with an animal or in the best case, the captain america knock-off.

Personally, and this is a student who's gone to every home basketball/football game in the last 4 years' opinion, a mascot is more distracting than useful and we shouldn't pursue one. We're not going to come up with something that makes even at best a 51-49 majority happy.

The saving grace in this ill-conceived plan is that whatever squirrel or moo-cow or cartoonized Roger Ebert or anthropomorphic dancing slide rule they end up choosing as our new "mascot" will be universally hated and run out of town within three years, at which point we can regain the tiny shred of dignity that goes with being mascotless. I cannot imagine any scenario where this idea would be successful. None.

Here's the truth of it, regardless of where you stand on getting a mascot or not.

At our first game on 9/3, we have the opportunity for the fans, the press, and the sporting world to have something positive to say about Illinois athletics. A new, intelligent, eager AD, who is also a former star athlete and student. An amazing get as a football coach, beloved by nearly everyone who interacts with him.

For a university that has been brought low time and time again by poor decisions, poor leaders, poor coaching, fan apathy, etc. etc. we NEED a positive spin on our story. Lovie and Josh are that perfect story.

Instead, the non-offensive, non-silly new mascot will come running out and be booed soundly by alumni and local fans. The discussion in the stands and on air will be about the fans hating the new mascot.

Barb, please. You hit a home run with Josh and Lovie. This place creates enough negative stories without having this one added to it. Let's just stick with the Lovie and Josh story and get a positive news story for a change. If you and your 28 friends want a mascot, set up your own tailgate, maybe at the Savoy Walmart. Have your fun, take your pics and rally around it all you want. Let's just have the public seeing a POSITIVE view of our beloved just this once.

Does anyone else find it ironic that some are opposed to having an Abe Lincoln or even World War I soldier as a mascot because that doesn't hold them in the most respectful light, yet the Chief was the perfect mascot?

I think what most fail to realize is that had the Chief been based on an actual historical figure or at least historically more accurate to those from the Peoria Tribe, we would still have a Chief.

Are any anti-Abe people also pro-Chief? I'm certainly not. (I'm pro-Chef! Who doesn't like food?)

I wouldn't object to a student dressed as Abraham Lincoln reading the Gettysburg Address in a dignified manner at halftime, but it would probably (hopefully?) make people reflect on how trivial sports really are in the big picture. Not sure if that's what the administration is going for here.

I honestly couldnt care less if we had Chief back as a mascot or not.-which we never will- But I would be all for having the logo back.-which is just as unlikely I fear-

I'm not sure to be honest. I'm just saying the anti-Abes are using the same policy as the Anti-Chief. I personally would have been a pro-Chief correction where the regalia actually represented that of the Peoria Tribes and maybe an actual historical chief similar to Chief Oseola in Florida.

If I had to choose an alternative, I'd select the World War I soldier and designate U of I "America's Team" for collegiate sports.

Well, as one who believes Abe/World War I soldier won't/shouldn't happen, that's on the grounds of:
(1) I don't care if the chief comes back, and I'm fine if we are mascot-less. I DO care if we fill the void with a ridiculous caricature mascot and
(2) If we can't have the chief for political correctness/misrepresentation reasons, we can't have the other two - ESPECIALLY if we are looking for a MASCOT, and not a SYMBOL, as the mascot gig is goofy and dumb in and of itself.

I never witnessed the chief live (have watched the dance online) and have never felt anything but feelings of respect for the symbol. I think replacing him with a forced mascot will be unproductive and be more splitting than unifying.

How about the invisible chief. Oh wait thats what we have now. Status quo looks like the best option

Let's see...

1. We could emulate Stanford and have the administration unilateraly decide to change to a color that is spelled and pronounced like a bird that is always singular (The Cardinal) but use a tree as the image.

2. We could emulate UCSB and let the stoned student body vote for the spineless Banana Slug as a mascot.

3. We could be Fighting Illini and stand behind the Chief as a symbol and have no mascot.

4. We could go with the squirrels that make our campus famous.

5. We could go with a keg that is emblematic of the raison d'être for much of our student body.

Their teams have done pretty well since the change. ;) (Shout out to Stevegarbs!) :D

Hey, UCSB are the Gauchos (should be Gauchas for the ladies no?). You're confusing them with UCSC. :)

Definitely an option. :)

Still prefer the Monty Python rabbit.
Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer! :)

5. We could go with a keg that is emblematic of the raison d'être for much of our student body.

Keggy McKegface! :)

How is Lincoln that exciting? He was the president, did a lot of great things sure. But for a sporting event? If we are looking for a mascot to rev up the crowd, throw a couple shirts, and go to parties. Is this really the solution. Granted im pessimistic of idea to begin with. But the idea of little kids running up to 8ft foam orange and blue Abraham Lincoln doesnt seem like the solution. Just seems weird.

Per this site, Abe is in the Wrestling Hall of Fame.

I think it makes no sense to be Illini and have some mascot other than Chief. Hard to associate anything that relates to the name that doesn't connect to the Illini tribe. Our mascot met extinction just like the tribe we tried (even if we did fall short) to honor.

I support the status quo.

I am officially on team #NewFurryPantlessMascot

I mean this suggestion genuinely, for no other reason than to get under the skin of the myriad of individuals that seemingly care excessively about this issue. There is no solution that will get this 100% right, so the next best option in my mind is to #TrollTheMasses
