a mascot is more distracting than useful and we shouldn't pursue one. We're not going to come up with something that makes even at best a 51-49 majority happy.
Here's the truth of it, regardless of where you stand on getting a mascot or not.
At our first game on 9/3, we have the opportunity for the fans, the press, and the sporting world to have something positive to say about Illinois athletics. A new, intelligent, eager AD, who is also a former star athlete and student. An amazing get as a football coach, beloved by nearly everyone who interacts with him.
For a university that has been brought low time and time again by poor decisions, poor leaders, poor coaching, fan apathy, etc. etc. we NEED a positive spin on our story. Lovie and Josh are that perfect story.
Instead, the non-offensive, non-silly new mascot will come running out and be booed soundly by alumni and local fans. The discussion in the stands and on air will be about the fans hating the new mascot.
Barb, please. You hit a home run with Josh and Lovie. This place creates enough negative stories without having this one added to it. Let's just stick with the Lovie and Josh story and get a positive news story for a change. If you and your 28 friends want a mascot, set up your own tailgate, maybe at the Savoy Walmart. Have your fun, take your pics and rally around it all you want. Let's just have the public seeing a POSITIVE view of our beloved just this once.
Does anyone else find it ironic that some are opposed to having an Abe Lincoln or even World War I soldier as a mascot because that doesn't hold them in the most respectful light, yet the Chief was the perfect mascot?
I think what most fail to realize is that had the Chief been based on an actual historical figure or at least historically more accurate to those from the Peoria Tribe, we would still have a Chief.
Are any anti-Abe people also pro-Chief? I'm certainly not. (I'm pro-Chef! Who doesn't like food?)
I wouldn't object to a student dressed as Abraham Lincoln reading the Gettysburg Address in a dignified manner at halftime, but it would probably (hopefully?) make people reflect on how trivial sports really are in the big picture. Not sure if that's what the administration is going for here.

Lady Lasagna
How about "INI" - the "Its Not Ideal" Mascot
Let's see...
1. We could emulate Stanford and have the administration unilateraly decide to change to a color that is spelled and pronounced like a bird that is always singular (The Cardinal) but use a tree as the image.
2. We could emulate UCSB and let the stoned student body vote for the spineless Banana Slug as a mascot.
3. We could be Fighting Illini and stand behind the Chief as a symbol and have no mascot.
4. We could go with the squirrels that make our campus famous.
5. We could go with a keg that is emblematic of the raison d'être for much of our student body.

How is Lincoln that exciting? He was the president, did a lot of great things sure. But for a sporting event? If we are looking for a mascot to rev up the crowd, throw a couple shirts, and go to parties. Is this really the solution. Granted im pessimistic of idea to begin with. But the idea of little kids running up to 8ft foam orange and blue Abraham Lincoln doesnt seem like the solution. Just seems weird.
I genuinely lol'd .
How about Captain Hindsight?
