My two cents, and what it has been for years, is that the Chief is gone. He isn't coming back. It won't be too long before students at U of I will have been born after his final game.

Other than grasping onto the past and living the glory of the "good ol' days", I can't fathom why we'd fight a new mascot. Get a bird, or a turtle, or fox, I don't care. Make it so kids going to games have something to have fun with and give a high five. Have someone for drunk college students to get their pictures with.

This is all just entertainment, right? Why are we the only fan base that feels like we can't have a little fun with our mascot?

I think it's obvious what the new mascot should be. Grovie: half Groce, half Lovie.

Seriously, though, I could actually get behind the idea of a Captain America knockoff. Captain Illini with the new Illini shield? Sure, why not? I would prefer no stupid animals and, for the love of god, under no circumstance should it have anything to do with Abe Lincoln.

WEITHER ITS A MILITARY FIGURE OR OTHERWISE, I THINK THAT WE SHOULD NOT LOSE OUR ILLINI TRADEMARK(WITHOUT CHIEF). LETS FIND A REBRANDING THAT USES ILLINI IN ANOTHER NON-NATIVE AMERICAN WAY. AFTER ALL WE WILL ALWAYS BE ILLINI JUST AS HOOSIERS ARE..... WHATEVER HOOSIERS ARE. UNLESS WE WANT TO CHANGE THE NAME OF THE STATE. I guess I could get behind Capt Illini or that Eagle someone had earlier with feathers similar to the Chief logo. We could be the Screamin Eagles and pay homage to the 101st Airborne Division that created a legacy in WWII.

But honestly I still love the Chief and am fine with no "mascot". Maybe a symbol of some sort is okay...but I'm still not feeling a goofy, mischeveous, characature mascot.

Captain America type with the new shield would be cool. Also, "our state, our team" ties to land of Lincoln. I'm not sure why people hate on the idea of Lincoln. There could even be a helmet logo similar to the current New England Patriots design with Abe's silhouette in O&B...not that I'm suggesting change there, but going with Lincoln offers a lot of options. Flame away.

I could get behind Lincoln. At least he is associated with the state. in what universe is a knock off Captain America with an Illini shield cool? Seems like his only superpower would be getting booed everywhere he goes..

I'm quite ambivalent about this whole issue. The only thing I don't want to see come of it is losing the name Fighting Illini.

Lincoln's been mentioned a lot, if they did something similar to the Washington Nationals Abe Lincoln from the President's Race that'd be fine with me.

How is Lincoln that exciting? He was the president, did a lot of great things sure. But for a sporting event? If we are looking for a mascot to rev up the crowd, throw a couple shirts, and go to parties. Is this really the solution. Granted im pessimistic of idea to begin with. But the idea of little kids running up to 8ft foam orange and blue Abraham Lincoln doesnt seem like the solution. Just seems weird.

If you can't get stoked seeing a caricature of this brave man who was shot in the back of the head shooting t-shirts into the crowd, you might as well not get out of bed. What a great way to honor our fallen leader! Won't it be a hoot when Herbie the Husker tackles him? R.I.P. Abraham Lincoln!
