Michael Porter Jr. to have back surgery, likely out for rest of season

I see Tilmon can't stay on the floor either because of foul trouble. He's fouled out of 2/4 games so far and had 3 and 4 fouls in the other two games. Mizzou could struggle a bit without Porter Jr.

The even funnier part is does this now elevate Tilmons contributions or the younger brothers and one of them leaves after this year too?

Never want to see a guy get hurt, but when you recruit as skeazy as Cuonzo did, can't help but smile a bit. Especially when your boss is a missou fan.

Tilmon likely needs to learn how not foul before getting to the NBA

Tilmon is no where close to a one and done. That doesn't mean he won't leave, but he won't be a first round pick.

That’s terrible. As someone with back issues, wouldn’t wish them on anyone.

I had back surgery with my L4-5-S1 fused and suffer to this day, 14 years later. I doubt my neurosurgeon was as good as the one he’ll have access to. My heart goes out to him.

Pretty crappy for Mizzou. He should get a redshirt though and still have 4 years after this. But it's never good when the #1 or #2 player goes down.

That said.... it should be a good braggin' rights game now.

Are you serious?!? It's highly unlikely he ever plays another minute of college ball.

Feel bad for Porter. And back issues don't usually go away. Of course it is good to be 18 or 19, but a really tall guy with back issues . . . not good.

Best wishes for him.
Less love for Miznoz

Looks like he won't ever play a game for Mizzou. I hope he makes a full recovery but would love for this to result is a huge loss of momentum for them

Have they got any momentum to lose? If they do, I hope they lose it. Didn’t the younger Porter also sign with them?

I do truly feel bad for the kid, and hope he can still achieve his goals of playing in the NBA.

But for what this means for the direction of the program and Mizzou fans on the other hand. Well...lol.

Bad break for the kid, worst break for the program, and terrible for Tilmon and the others. I believe the other recruits would have benefitted drastically from having Porter there a year, now they are forced to probably perform at a higher rate which will breed problems/fouls/turnovers, and generally just poorer play.

Hope his surgery is a success, as I too have back problems...not fun.

As a fan of college basketball, this is too bad. In the interviews that I saw with him, he seemed like a fairly amenable, good natured kid. In terms of basketball, the kid was a massive talent, hopefully he makes it back to that level.

Professional athletes' bodies take a pounding, and starting out with back issues will not make that path any easier for this young man.

Another argument against 1 and done for those few players who have the potential to go straight to the pros. Hope, for his family's sake, that they obtained an insurance policy against a portion of his future earnings potential, so in the event he is unable to make a full recovery and play at the elite level at which he is accustomed, he is still able to derive some financial benefit from investing a significant portion of his life to date developing and refining his natural basketball talents.

I truly believe this was done by potential NBA agents/organizations saying "Lets get this back healthy before the draft!" (not saying he was talking to the NBA, clearing my throat) but this kid is a top five pick....

Even if it's not major there are a ton of hoops to jump through and passing a physical is one of them before being drafted by an NBA organization....I guarantee they are going to take this year to get him ready for June Green Room stroll!

I am guessing he will begin rehab, strengthening the back and related muscles. The time off, physically, might benefit him, (not saying surgery is a good thing, recovery though. . . )but I wonder how a season away from basketball will affect him.

Things could change, but the Illinois non-conference schedule took another hit. Looking really soft with Wake Forest and Missouri both struggling.
