I DVRed this game and watched the first half slowly, possession by possession. It's astonishing how often they are out of position, don't communicate, make the proper switch, or are out of defensive posture and position. It's like theyve never been drilled on team defense concepts and the fundamentals of defense. This isn't the most athletic team, but that has nothing to do with how poorly they execute.

Today, they looked like the WTH attitude prevailed, ...there was very little mental toughness and urgency to compete to win an almost must game to stay on track for the post season.

6th game this year theyve been comletely dismantled. It's broke, and Groce is at a loss on how to fix.

Illinois is much more talented and athletic than other teams who are doing much better. Butler and Notre Dame are not the tallest or most athletic teams out there. They seem to be doing OK.

Very disappointing to whip a team two weeks and then look like a diff team when play again. Time for change.

Isn't amazing how much more unathletic and slow the players have become in only 10 days? If only Groce had better players. :hand:

What drives me insane about JG is how we've seen no adaptation to what's clearly not working. He's still using the 'system' he came in with and have nearly nothing to show for it. Is he oblivious to this or is he intentionally planning to go down with the ship? It seems more of the latter as each season plays out.

When all the signs point to your plan being bad, you had best find yourself a new plan. And if you can't, it's time you move on.

Good Grief!:(

At least my granddaughter kept me distracted, did the coaching carousel thread reach page 100 yet?

Now contrast that with Nichols who I was very impressed with his positioning even when he was off the ball. He moves very well with his man and is really good at navigating through screen. In position to make plays. Hes about the only one on the roster that does it with consistency. Great defensive footwork.

Yeah, well you have to cut Kipper some slack. The coaches haven't had much time to work with him yet. I'm sure that he'll be playing defense as good as Mav too by the time he's a senior.

Amazing isn't it? How does something like that happen?

It's almost like there's a whole other component being factored in beyond the players. I wonder what it could be. Hmmmmm...

Leron Black played 13 minutes. Had 4 pts and 4 rebounds.

Jalen Coleman-Lands played 20 minutes and had 2 pts and 1 rebound.

When they were recruited they were both among the 50 best HS Bball players in the country. In the country. Now they mostly look like Bradley rotation guys.

That's either some serious rating mistakes or some seriously bad coaching/player development.

There would be nothing to clean up. Obviously. So, no practices. ............

I think Te'Jon's comments about the rotation (start at around 2:20) are pretty big. He comments on nobody knowing what the rotation is going to be in any game, feels like that has to make it incredibly hard to get in a rhythm.
That's...not a good sign.

This is just awful, for the players, the fans, the staff, the AD, everyone. I feel bad for anyone who hitched their wagon to John Groce's star. I even feel a little bad for Groce, but I am softhearted.

Does not look like a -ve comment. Says they are not the same every game and they need to be ready.

I think we can safely assume it is the latter. Both guys have shown glimpses as to why they were top 50 recruits. I think poor coaching says it all.

I think that speaks to a lack of a set rotation and how it is constantly differing and changing every single game. Groce even said it, he started playing Tate and DJW today because they practiced well. Well, they may have practiced well, but does Groce consider how that'll screw up the continuity and consistency of the rotation over the last few games.

This team has no identity and no set rotation. A recipe for disaster.

Can someone please tell Groce...

...that STATISTICS do not win and lose games.

He sits there and quotes stats, after every game... such specific stats.

It's as if he thinks "we need to improve our stats". "If only we had not been 22-12 on points on turnovers." "If only we had shot 45% from 3 instead of 28%..."

That is NOT how you win/lose games.

He should be in this room saying... we need to play fundamentally sound defense. We need to stay with the offensive and defensive system. (He needs to implement an actual philosophy and fundamentally sound, system... but that's a different post.)

But I am so clearly hoping for something that is not going to happen.

Agreed....I made mention before of my dislike for the analytics heavy approach....so, the only conclusion I have is no more math teachers.

Here are some statistics:

Thorne Jr., Mike & Tate, Jaylon (0 & 0) min => Illini 85, Mich 69
Thorne Jr., Mike & Tate, Jaylon (12 & 20) min => Illini 57, Mich 66

Tate was in the top 5 for minutes played today for the Illini...

Largest Deficit for each Illini B1G road game:

Maryland: -31
Indiana: -22
Purdue: -27
Michigan: -21

Not a real good look on the road there... :(

I watched today's game in horror. I'm embarrassed for the kids. I've never been embarrassed by the basketball team in my 40 years being an Illini. Something's got to change. JW your table is set.

I'm sitting here fuming and rolling the words "the most senior team" in my head. The senior part only has value really, when those guys have played together. How many of our players have had two full years of playing and practicing together? If you are talking starters, there's Malcolm, and maybe MM, although he didn't start part of last year and this year. OK, I'll even throw in Finke. There's AJ and DJW, sure, but neither is starter ready. Abrams, JCL, Nichols, Tate, Thorne, TeJon all out at some point during off season practice or the season. It's a recipe for disaster. Changes in the staff and/or philosophy need to come in some form, but I hope that another total rebuild is necessary. Ten years of rebuild is really hard to recover from...

Look, I'm usually one of the lead villagers carrying both Torch and Pitchfork calling for Groce's head, but this game was not on him. Sure he gave Thorne a few too many minutes and he still hasn't instituted an offense that resembles anything that a 3rd grade team couldn't play. However...

This game was on the players. In no particular order.

Bad Shooting
Poor Rebounding
TURNOVERS TURNOVERS TURNOVERS
Lackadaisical defense
No sense of effort or urgency until 2 minutes left to play

Some people will try to say those things are due to bad coaching and that is a factor, but it's mainly on the players. Groce still needs to go, but this game is on the players.

The real question is if the team has outright quit on him...
