Missouri 63, Illinois 56 POSTGAME

Damonte Williams is , without a doubt, the worst player on this team...anyone who still says he is worthy of the minutes he gets knows absolutely nothing about college BB....

anyone who thinks damonte williams is , without a doubt, the worst player on this team, does, without a doubt, not know basketball.

If we had some shooters, things would a whole lot different. Frazier is the closest thing to a consistent shooter, but he doesn't take enough of them to matter. As is, our offense is easy to game plan against when all you do is kill 15 seconds off the shot clock by doing 30 handoffs on the perimeter.
This particular squad is missing a couple of pure shooters......badly. They have nobody that has to be accounted for on the wing or fanning out on a break. The three ball is instant momentum....we just don't have that guy.

Maybe we should stop with the AYO show and maybe try some team stuff

For the record, I don’t think Ayo is PG, but I also don’t think he is the problem. The lack of any kind of half court offense is the problem.

There are many consistent thoughts in this thread - lack of shooters, poor A/TO ratio, problems handling pressure/lack of dribbling. We have guys that can dribble/pass/shoot but the problem is we never get them in positions to succeed (aka get good shots).

It’s been like that in the half court during BU’s entire tenure here. We masked it some in previous years by extended the ball pressure and forcing more TO’s that led to transition scoring. There is a reason why BU wants to score in 7 seconds. It’s because if we don’t get shots in transition, we don’t get good shots. Period.

The offensive scheme needs an overhaul. The weave is laughable at best and produces nothing. Guys often look out of position and lost.

Now, to be fair, it all looks worse when the effort is subpar and Mizzou took our lunch money in that area today. We looked lackadaisical the whole game. We can be better if we get second chance points, hustle to get TO’s and get out on the break, etc. But our half court offense has been and continues to be a dud under this staff.

Ok, I feel much better, and still know the team is going to be a helluva lot better as the season goes on.
How many more games until the "we will get better as the season goes on" becomes blatantly ridiculous?

Meachum, summed it up a week or so, ago. This team doesn't shoot or pass the ball well. I do think TF is a good shooter from 3, though. Griifin, has shot the 3 well against a few sub par opponents to my recollection, but hasn't shot well against the Power 5's , yet. Ayo, Griffin, Feliz (jones if he ever plays) are going to have to shoot the 3 better, much better. If only it were that easy.
Even in the win against MICH. they didn't shoot the 3 well, BUT they did come ready to play in other area of the game and prevailed.

Does anyone know how to block out on rebounds? Second and third chance points by MO were sickening to watch. Where is the shooting? No one but Ayo could put the ball in the basket and he was mostly shut down in the second half. Turnovers!!!! Where is the ball handling? Georgi does not need to be dribbling the ball at the top of the key. Free throw shooting is not nearly solid enough. This team is really lacking in fundamentalsl. They are really one dimensional at this point and execution is poorly lacking. Too many short-comings to make up for right now and wins are going to be hard to come by with tough competition until something changes.

Kofi probably missed 6 as well as many freethrows.

It is tough to digest...but BU has out recruited Quonzo, but in the end he is getting outcoached.

Quonzo figured out a way to rattle our play and BU is not able to respond. Quonzo dictated pace and play with his half court defense and BU had no answer.

Too add on he is junior now, it's time to step up and be a leader. He just hasn't gotten better never developed a jump shot. He is credited as the glue guy but he still gets beat off the dribble bad timely fouls bad passes liability on offense. Pass the time for Griffin and Jones to get more mins.

I was kind of surprised the a number of times our players get beat off the dribble, and how much quicker Mizzo's guards were. Few assists. Few 3 pointers. Average defense. The 3 guards better have a "come to Jesus" meeting. One can not expect a freshman center to carry a team through a Big 10 season.

The biggest play in that game, to me, was the Pinson bailout three when we were up 6. I think we were just about off to the races and that absolutely snuffed out the flame.
I thought the very same thing.

the team started with some energy but miznoz defense wore on them. Illini got timid instead of attacking.

Trent Meachem said if miznoz forced Il into half court game we’d struggle. Seems coach should know that and extend pressure to match theirs and get us more transition action.

Someone asked great question in post game: you talk about nameless/faceless opponents but said you wish your team matched mu intensity - they took it personal - how can you reconcile that? BU was struck momentarily dumb before returning to his talking points. His act is wearing thin on me.

so many of our issues are not new: playing down to less talented teams, missed bunnies, turnovers, close game losses, timidity - these seem to be features, not bugs in BU‘s system and have been consistent throughout his tenure. It’s clear to me that he’s not maximizing the talent on this team - which is not exceptional - but average B1G talent buries Miami, Nichols State and Miznoz.

If the goal of the AD and university is to get back to competing for Big Ten championships and competing in the national tournament every year, I am thoroughly unconvinced that our coaching staff has what it takes to get this kind of talent prepared to play on the big stage, night in and night out.

That was pretty tough to watch. Missouri made contact on almost every Illinois possession, some got called, some didn't and I didn't think most of our guys were ready for the level of contact they experienced,

I've been reading thru all the comments to see if someone else saw what I saw. I didn't really get to watch much of the first half due to x-mas dinner at the in-laws, but this was my take on the game. I have not seen reffing like this for awhile. Can't say the refs were biased, but I thought they were the difference in the game.

A young broadcaster trying so hard to come up with a distinctive identity and failing so miserably. He will have a year to develop one that is not an assault on viewers. :)

schmack
When you smack someone for a legitimate reason, but social norms still see you as assaulting someone, eg, Sean Connery saying it's okay to slap women who have done wrong to him, or a recent event in Brooklyn Heights where a man slapped a parent in a Starbucks for being a bad parent. We have a team chemistry problem - that's why from half to half and game to game we have no idea which Illini team we are going to get...

#221
Illinois looks lost out there, like there waiting for other team mates to make a play, also they dont play physical they got pushed around by Missouri. They need put more effort into every play,Missouri seem to want it more.

I don't have the hostility toward DW that the OP has, but the bottom line is that this team needs more players with fewer holes in their game. DW has some major holes and it's hurting us. Others do as well, but those missed layups were morale killers.
How many did he miss vs. What cofi, and geogi missed???? This is crap...Trent didnt shoot enough and dre didnt do squat no of the did, we didnt lose this game because DW missed a few layups.

Agree that something is wrong. Some say Ayo won't pass to Trent. I don't know that. Giorgi is still useful but all this elbow swinging and hooking he does going to the hole belongs on the playground. The weave doesn't work because the other team jumps out I'm front of it and the offense stops. Our 6 foot shooting guard needs screens to get open. Our 6 5 point guard is not a good shooter or distributor. We play a guy you don't have to guard which mucks up whatever you run. Our roster is thin..Nichols was bad, Griffin OK, and Tevian is rusty. Things will have to change or he will transfer. Kofi did not have his best game but he got hacked a lot. He has not developed bbv or he just isn't good enough. Defense has been mostly good and rebounding also but against power 5 teams will likely will only be slight advantage. Hard to see more than 8 big ten wins.
4 assists indicate nobody is passing to anybody. 171 total assists compared to 187 TOs for the season. 30.4% from 3 as a team. Rebounding was good until yesterday. GRIFFIN led the team with 6. Go Allan! The one time I saw Tevian in the gain 3 Tigers swept by for a putback. Seniors did nothing, outside of Ayo, nobody scored much, except at the line. Shot 36% for the game total. Finally put together the two bad halves. Need to leave now.

Merry Christmas Everyone.

GO ILLINI!

PLEASE!

I agree the whole team sucked today...terribly sucked....BUT, BU has been playing an overmatched player ( DW ) ahead of younger players ( AG, TJ )and it is biting us in the butt bigtime...

Once again, I have no ill will towards DW, but if you are watching DW and think he is ever gong to be HRF then you need a different hobby...He ain't , and never will be the player that some here think he is...And he NEVER has graded out to be the best player on the team...puff, puff, pass if you think that...He has lost games by making terrible out of bounds passes, poor defense and not being able to make a simple unguarded layup...CMON now , facts are facts...it's time to quit dreaming on him and let the younger players play...they will make mistakes but not as many as he does ...glue guy is right ...his feet are stuck to the court on D....

We lost by being out toughed and no offensive scheme's other than that silly weave......the drinking shall begin......heavily............
He has graded out as one of the best players it's not all about offense.
