Hi, my name is Emerson Bigguns*, and I am a music-a-holic.

I am a sometime semi-professional musician. (Vocals and Guitars) My parents were always in bands. I had live music coming up from underneath my crib as a baby. (my dad and his friends practiced in our basement) It is a big part of my identity. It gave me confidence. It helped me talk to girls. It provided me with evidence that I could be special. (not just my mom telling me I'm special...)

Music has enriched and informed my life in ways few other things have.

I am a Vinyl collector and aspiring Rock and Roll historian.

I love spinning records, scotch whiskey, and Illini basketball. (also Cubs baseball and Bears football)

Our church doubles as a concert hall. We’ve hosted the likes of Richie Havens, Leon Russell, Johnny Winter (all just before their respective passing). Believe it or not, people still perform here! Haha. Though my claim to fame is being lifelong friends with Jason Ringenberg of Jason & the Scorchers.

One of my quarantine projects was to finally put together a budget, but decent quality, hi-fi setup. It's been a fun little hobby and it feels great to support a local record shop.

I’d be interested in hearing what you got. I’ve been wanting to get a decent setup again. I’m so tired of the tiny speakers and all-in-one stuff.

Hello Emerson Bigguns..........

Welcome Emerson to Music Anon and thanks for sharing....this is the kind of participation and sharing we want to have at this site....Sharing deep feelings about sounds put together in a cohesive matters , along with soul searching lyrics, can really change lives.....

Interesting about the music coming from the basement right to your influential ears at the earliest of times.....My mother swears she would position her belly next to a 45 phonograph and play Elvis at a loud volume to me while still inside her.....Funny thing is, I never liked Elvis....I was always into Motown and the R & B genre.....While all my friends were going ape s**t over the Monkees, i was groovin to James Brown, the Supremes Temptations....etc

I played in 3 bands in high school in the 60's.....last one was pretty good....i played keyboards and then drums , as that was my true gift, bangin the skins...

I'm listening to Boston/ Don't Look back album through my Spotify Premium membership....it's being broadcast through my samsung 65' tv with a
Bose home theater sound system hookup........just chillin....................thanks again for joining

I will share more with all about me later as we have construction still needed here .........

hey Bro........welcome here..........
I saw Richie Havens, Stevie Wonder, Rare Earth, Bloodrock and numerous other bands at old Roberts Stadium in Evansville in late summer 1960's ....What a blast that was ....Roberts Stadium was a dugout in the ground sports arena where you walk up outside and look down inside....

Will talk later.......

Welcome IanK............If you need any ideas, please feel free to ask.....

I used to have a system of a Pioneer 300 watt receiver....pioneer 300 cd CD player.....3 pairs of Bose 301 speakers and my crowning jewels were a pair of Executive II speakers in wood cabinets with each cabinet having 5 speakers inside.......window shaking unit......Now I have my Spotify run through my phone and TV with a Bose Home Theater system .....I still get off on my music as Bose has always been my brand, but I kinda miss cranking up the old speakers some times ....Like Marty McFly at Dr Browns house .....

Welcome friend and good luck with your project....

(1971)
Metamorphosis is the fourth album by Iron Butterfly, released on August 13, 1970. It reached number 16 on the US charts.[1] Mike Pinera and Larry " El Rhino" Reinhardt became members of Iron Butterfly in the early part of 1970.
The album was recorded at American Recording studio and produced by Richard Podolor, engineered by Bill Cooper.
The single "Easy Rider" reached number 66 on the Billboard chart,[1] making it the band's biggest hit aside from "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". The album is noted for having one of the earliest uses of the talk box on a rock album, which Pinera used on "Butterfly Bleu."

My favorite piece of Iron Butterfly............My band played InAGaddaDaVidda at all our concerts....was most requested song back then.....i played keyboards and backup vocals....

Fantastic thread. Not sure why it is in Illinoisloyalty.

Having said that- one of my favorite records is an obscure concept album called Radio KAOS by a guy named Roger Waters of Pink Floyd game. The story is great- but read the story in the liner notes before listening.

I'll check it out...thanks.........I've been a Pink Floyd fan since hearing " The Dark Side of the Moon "' while I was in an altered state of mind....

As far as where the thread is, Dan has allowed me a lot of freedom with the Gifs Anon thread here in chat and I respect him for that.....Chat seems to be the ideal place free of complainerologists gumming it up with the negative vibezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....so enjoy and welcome , my brother in music....

Hi, I’m texillwek, and I am a music-a-holic.

I love all kinds of jams, but my focus is on the all the greatest hits from the 80s, 90s, 00s, and today. I have no intent on recovering, and plan on wading deeper and deeper into the musical abyss. Thanks for listening!

I’d be interested in hearing what you got. I’ve been wanting to get a decent setup again. I’m so tired of the tiny speakers and all-in-one stuff.
Happy to share!

I went in hoping to go used with my amplifier and speakers, but found a deal on speakers that beat anything I could find on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, etc...

-Turntable (new, but on sale ~33% off from Audio Advisor): Pro-Ject Essential III SB (https://pro-jectusa.com/product/essential-iii-sb/). I was going to go one level up with a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon, but decided the automatic speed change was more important given my collection of 45s & 33 1/3s and the hassle that would have came with manually changing the belt speed.
-Integrated Amplifier (found on Facebook Marketplace for ~$100): Marantz PM5005 (https://www.marantz.com/en-us/product/hi-fi-components/pm5005). Frankly, this was an absolute steal. This model is a bit dated for a newer Marantz amp, but it's still going for $500-$650 online.
-Speakers (40-50% off on Klipsch's website): Klipsch R-51M (https://www.klipsch.com/products/r-51m-bookshelf-speaker). They sound great, but I do prefer the look of the RP-500M (https://www.klipsch.com/products/rp-500m-bookshelf-speaker).

On top of that, the other things I added were mostly accessories (e.g., basic record cleaning kit, anti-static brush, LP holder from Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/listing/505086585/beautiful-lp-holder-1-5lp-record-stand), cork slipmat from Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/listing/548640854/premium-turntable-slipmat-by-tazstudio), speaker wire, banana plugs, and once my new puppy is well-behaved, a Mathmos lava lamp (https://www.mathmos.com/mathmos-telstar-rocket-shaped-lava-lamp-3021-0.html#yellow-red)).

If you are a Redditor, the subreddit /r/BudgetAudiophile was immensely helpful to help get support on the mix & match process, alongside even more "simple" things. For instance, this was my first exposure to speaker wire and banana plugs. :).

As far as how this combination sounds, my ears aren't fine-tuned enough to notice the quality difference between my audiophile set-up and something that is 10-20x the cost of what I put in, but it is certainly lightyears ahead of any basic speaker system I owned previously. I have a decent blend of genres in my collection. The best sounding records are rock & roll (e.g., The White Stripes, Alabama Shakes, Gary Clark, Jr.), but the speakers have enough bass to them to bring hip-hop to life (e.g., Outkast, The Notorious B.I.G.), and don't bring down the quality of anything in between (e.g., Amy Winehouse, Arlo Parks, The Avett Brothers, Kacey Musgraves, Sturgill Simpson).

Outside of that, I've mostly been building up my record collection. I'm trying to find them "in the wild," though I have caved on a few on Discogs.

I've got a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo and it doesn't need a belt change for 45s. The power switch is either 33 or 45, and that's it. completely manual otherwise, but it's a great rig for the price.

In the past 2 years I've doubled the size of my vinyl collection, mostly with used, but have started buying all my new music on wax as well. I'm having fun with the array of colors available now, and I went nuts a couple weeks ago on Record Store Day. The Tom Petty re-imagining of She's the One (Angel Dream) is the highlight but there was plenty of good stuff that day.

If you're getting into vinyl, get familiar with discogs.com. Their marketplace is a great place to find things and the website is a great resource on the values of albums. Waaay better than eBay where you're likely to overpay by 20% at minimum.

Collective Soul (sometimes referred to as the Blue Album to differentiate from the second self-titled album) is the second studio album by Collective Soul. It became the band's highest selling album to date, going Triple-Platinum, and spent 76 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts. The singles "December," "The World I Know" and "Where the River Flows" all reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, while the first two singles also became major pop hits.
Frontman Ed Roland has considered Collective Soul the band's true debut album; Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid was intended more as a promotional demo and a means of acquiring a publishing contract for Roland who in 1995 noted, "It's so funny for people to compare the two. It's like comparing one band to another band. This record is our first record, flat out."[1]

Collective Soul has a brand of music that is very complex but i always end up beating my hands and feet like i was drumming when I listen to any album of their's.......I love all their albums but decided on this one for the POTD....

Enjoy...................

That's good info on the Evo. Mustn't have looked as in-depth as I should have. If I ever upgrade, that might be the one I go with. It's sleek! I do love the Essential III. Pro-Ject as a brand comes highly recommended.

Discogs is wonderful. I've avoided eBay with the exception to see if there is a lower price. Or to find antique pop/beer crates to store my records. Found a cool one from a local pop company from my hometown and a beverage company from my time in Akron.

It's quite the fun hobby. Missed out on RSD this year unfortunately. It fell on "Loving Day" and I was attending a wedding. There's a part 2 in July I believe though!
