For public schools in certain states this effectively makes players employees of the state, right? With all the rights granted by that state for its employees, including pension rules, etc.?

Perhaps they could be paid as independent contractors (via a 1099 vs. W-2). This would alleviate your concerns, I believe...

I'm guessing too many other benefits provided by schools to qualify as independent contractors, but not my sector of the IRS

My perception of the play here is that Charlie Baker believes legislation in Congress (up to and including a statutory antitrust exemption) laying down new ground rules for college sports that keep the boat afloat is a possibility so long as it isn't perceived as a desperation gambit to keep the players locked away from the money, and rather than the NCAA is a reformed organization trying to be the good guys in a Wild West no one is happy with.

That's possible. I wouldn't bet on it, but it's possible.

Next up: binding short-term contracts and transfer restrictions... then, long-term contracts, change in term to "college employee-athlete", employee-athlete trades between schools, formation of a national college employee-athlete association/union, salary caps, arbitration/strikes, and finally, takeover of each individual college sport by existing or future professional teams & leagues with every university relinquishing its athletic department and the B1G Research Consortium's secret plan to rule the world will finally be unstoppable with college sports out of the way.

Hundreds — maybe thousands — of bag men will soon be out of work.
100 percent agree. If a P5 school has a 20 million budget for athletes (no idea what the top schools will do). That is a lot of money to go around. I fear the non revenue sports will soon be gone

Questions I have:

Will Title IX require same amount of money spent on men and women’s sports?

Do schools specialize to be a basketball football or other sport school.

This will be interesting

Another aspect to think about, if the schools are paying the coach $4 million+ and there is another couple of million spent on players, how much are tickets going to cost? Are schools going to sell out the upper bowl at $100 a seat on a snowy Tuesday in February? Is anyone going to want to spend that much to watch a game against Tennessee Tech?

Most colleges are not in major markets. Where is the money going to come from? If there is no salary cap, this feels like it will only compound the rich getting richer. Many schools don't make a profit at all. They'll just fall far farther behind and potentially disappear.

JW letter says they also expect disruptions to the NIL system, sounds like effectively ending how it works now. Does that mean the payments remain donor funded except officially go through the university?

Yeah, I truly hope our Basketball team can win an NCAA Title in the next 4-5 years. Football will never happen. But I definitely see myself disengaging in the very near future..... I need a reason to stay tethered, and a 80% yearly turnover of players is going to perhaps cut that cord...... I was born and raised in IL but was not a sports fan (any sport) at all in my youth, though I did listen to StL Cards football/baseball on my FM radio at night under my pillow ( Hart, Metcalf, O.J./Ozzie, Hrabosky, Simmons, Hernandez, Brock, etc... I came around after leaving the state in 1980. To be completely honest, the 1979 Bird/Magic NCAA Championship game and subsequent NBA dynamic drew me into NCAA/NBA ball for the 1st time. I followed Bird religiously as a Celtic and became a fan of the Celts during his tenure but stopped the year he retired. Personally I still believe the 1980's - 1990's were the GOLDEN YEARS of the NBA. My Goodness! the Celtic/76'ers/Jazz/Lakers/Rockets/Knicks/Sonics/Bulls/etc, etc.... games were absolutely thrilling to watch! I HATED the Original MJ and all things purple and gold, especially living in San Diego at the time, lol. I followed Illini ball peripherally during the 80's/90's (yeah, I know, but San Diego/Beaches/surfing/fishing/Mexico/marriage/life/children/work/etc.) but I became COMPLETELY engulfed in Illini basketball during the Brown/Williams years and have been a diehard since then. Football I jumped in during the Juice years I think, but Illini Basketball has always been my fave. So it's obvious I was drawn in by THE PLAYERS, as well as the geographic connection. But here we are and the 'player' connections are now tenuous at best.....

June 5th will be a day of reckoning. I am nearly 100% convinced this will be a day where the UI and all other prominent NCAA institutions, start and continue to ask for massive amounts of $$$$$$, and nothing more. We will be told that the path to survival and competence is only achieved through increasing/starting your monthly/yearly donations..... Get ready.....
