NCAA Tournament

I hope Coach Gentry might be able to help us if we play them as he worked for Mark Few at Gonzaga during the '17-'18 and '18-'19 seasons and played for him for 4 seasons there before that.
Man that would be tough to try and beat your alma mater in the NC

They take the highest percentage of shots at the rim in all of college basketball.

And if they don't have a shot at the rim to take, they'll often kick out for a 3 (plus the 3s they take in transition)

3 point shooting for the Zags:
Kispert - 44.4%
Ayayi - 39.7%
Suggs - 35.4%
Nembhard - 34.2%

The only thing bigger than Timmie's ears are the grudge he holds against Kendall Gill and anything related to the Illini.

I know i am late to the game on this, but this thing is fantastic.

For everyone praising Curbelo's improved turnover stats the last couple games, beware! This is just our opponents going deep into the scouting report and playing 5D chess. They know we are 8-0 when turning it over 15 or more times. 🤣

Don't post much, but I've been an Illini fan for over 40 years. As special as the '89 and '05 squads were, I feel more confident about this team finally getting that national championship than ever before. Those teams had amazing talent, but no low post dominance. This team does, and has the backcourt talent to compliment (and take control when necessary). It's just built properly to take home a title. Fingers crossed....

Has Kofi fouled out of a single game this year?
No but he had to sit a lot in the Baylor game when we had non-B1G refs (he had 7 pts, 4 rbs and 4 fouls in 18 min). But for Giorgi having a great game, we would have really had our butts handed to us. We had to use BVD last game to spell Giorgi and Kofi due to foul trouble, so we are not immune even with B1G refs.
I am sure our guys can adjust to tight calls. I am sure the coach will have them prepared for this. And I think that we will have an opportunity to adjust through the first couple of games. But having to have Kofi sit with fouls means that Giorgi is going to have to be passive on defense or risk the same problems. Guess I still have PTSD from 2005, but I think we beat anyone in the country if our bigs can stay out of foul trouble.

I'm not sure why you're doubling down on this. You said: "the Zags rely on a lot of transition offense and 3s"

They are 291st in the country in 3 point rate %. They only take 3s on 32.3% of their possessions, the exact same percentage as Indiana. Illinois is 313th at 30.7%.

Iowa, for example, is 104th 39.9%, of their possessions.

The fact is Gonzaga does not shoot many 3s, no matter what percentage some of their players make them at.

An early concern for me is the fact Georgia Tech has a traveling member of their party with a positive test result. Why are none of them in quarantine? What happens if they have someone test positive after playing us if either get that far?

This whole thing makes me nervous!!

Apparently Josh Pastner has been on the cautious side all year when it comes to this sort of stuff so I'm confident GT is doing the right thing.

Previously in the year it was reported GT didn't even practice together because Pastner was worried about the virus spreading to his team.

This will be the biggest issue for the Illini. I can see Kofi getting called for ticky tack fouls (even offensive fouls for bodying up guys in the post), and Giorgi fouls consistently when he is in the game just about every game. Even though B1G refs can be atrocious, they often let the guys play. Refs who don't see B1G teams might not be prepared for how physical our games are. This, and the physical grind of the season wearing down players, is why I don't think the B1G wins more NCAA championships than they do. Hope I am wrong and the refs instead call all the fouls that other players commit against Kofi. May be a race to see whose bigs foul out first.
The question is, will the coaching be good enough for us to adjust. I think it will be. Our players are smart enough and coaches are savvy enough to know how the game is being called and adjust, both offensively and defensively

Agree, and I think the inconsistency of BIG refs are what is so maddening. There was one foul call in particular on Liddell late in the second half when he was bodying up Giorgi that comes to mind. They had called at least 2 similar fouls on Kofi earlier, but when Liddell showed disbelief I agreed with him! All of those calls were horrible!

So long as the calls are consistent I think our guys can adjust and we have enough depth we can weather a reasonable amount of foul trouble.

As long as it isn't Kofi. We can compete without him, but we aren't special when he sits. He is the great un-equalizer. I think he tips the scales in our favor literally and figuratively, no matter who we play.

Read that KenPom's top 4 ranked teams were #1 seeds and the net 4 were #2 seeds.

Offered as useless info.
