What's this team desperately missing right now... ANY post presence on offense. Like even a guy we can just have post up... We don't have any way to get easy buckets right now... But good thing we ran off Dainja, Amani, shoot, even Ty... Underwood's grand plan was stretch the floor, shoot 3's, who gives a crap about post offense or the inside out game... Problem is that he built a team and an offense around shooting and we don't shoot it well
As bad as we have looked at times I don't think there is a game we wouldn't have won if our three point shooting had been consistent and at the expectations we reasonably thought we would achieve. Unfortunately our shooters have been too inconsistent and can't be counted on to be the main focus of our offense.

Used to be Gentry …

Tyler is one dimensional … Make shots offense … And when the shots aren’t falling … Shoot more … No adjustments …

Hamer should never have been an assistant coach … He was a video guy for a WNBA team … He should’ve been a video guy here and I wouldn’t have been complaining … Running our defense ??? Unacceptable …

Brad loves analytics so much … Here’s some analytics for him … 28.6% from 3 during Big Ten play as a team … Boswell 25% from 3 during Big Ten play … Will Riley 21% from 3 during Big Ten play … Tre White 17% from 3 during Big Ten play … DGL 29% from 3 during Big Ten play … Ben Humbrickhous 31% from 3 during Big Ten play …

Elite shooting team huh ?? 🙄💩

Now how bout we analyze how to make adjustments and win a daggum game …
Yeah, this is the thing for me. Plan A was run an offense based around high volume 3 point shooting at a somewhat efficient clip (33% or higher). It's not a bad plan A. They actually do get a lot of good looks at 3s. But clearly, the efficiency has not been there to make it consistently effective. A lot of games where even the open 3s don't fall.

So what is plan B? It doesn't seem like there is one.

What I imagine our late game timeout speeches being:

Ok guys , I have not a clue about X's and O's so let's all just hope we can throw something up and it goes!!! Wait, let me check with my son and make sure him and his buddy haven't dreamt up something...........................sh** never mind timeout is over....good luck men, don't be the one I throw under the bus!!!

I’m surprised those numbers are that high to be honest (they aren’t high, but higher than I thought).

And I get PnR is a staple in NBA offensive schemes, and most teams like to incorporate it to show recruits (come play in an NBA system), but those are the best shooters in the world. It’s not as effective when your D1 players don’t shoot as well as the 40 year olds at a before work Lifetime Fitness run.

And could we just hard hedge defensively on a bal screen one time to mix things up instead of playing drop coverage and putting our big retreating backwards and giving up layups and short jumpers.

As it should be!!! My worry is he will refuse to demote Tyler in any way shape or form, so Brad will go down with the ship. 04/2026 we will be looking at a whole new staff as well as players. Sure hope I am wrong!!!

We shot 42 threes and scored 30 points, which is .71 points per shot. We shot 31 twos and scored 32 points, which is 1.0 points per shot. For the season, before this game, we averaged .96 points per 3 point shot, and 1.16 points per 2 point shot. It just doesn't add up that we take so many 3s, when the stats say they are less productive. This loss was just deflating, and made even more so because it wasn't like Nebraska was playing well either. We just sucked more than a very mediocre team who played a crappy game too. IMHO, the team is mirroring BU's lack of fire.

Next year will be interesting. It's clear that retention combined with a few portal pieces is the way for success in the NIL/transfer portal world. We have struggled with retention, this offseason will be a big one. Not ready to write off the guy who rose the program from the grave and brought us to the elite eight. . .
Brad clearly over recruited a bit too much for this season. Losing Luke and filling that void with Booth and Jake isn’t showing the best results. Booth is no where close to being ready to play Big Ten basketball and Jake while doesn’t harm the team when he’s on the floor also isn’t someone that you should have out there for long stretches either. Nevertheless, I’m actually feeling positive that we will retain a lot of the core for next year.

If by core, you mean Morez, Tomi, Tre, Dra, and Kylan, fine. But I'd hope at least a couple of them aren't starting next season. And I don't care what happens to Booth, Ty, Jake, or Ben. I'd prefer they leave unless they're good with spot minutes or straight-up not playing.

Too bad we didn’t make just one more in regulation… but we tied a record (yay?) 🤨

I have reached the same conclusion, I won’t lose sleep (Eastern Time Zone) watching ISO/hero ball, or a bunch of ineffective 3 pt chucking.

We are who we are and if the 3s ain’t falling, this team ain’t winning and you know after 10 minutes which way the game is headed.

How does he not see that when you’re the 300th rated team in 3 point shooting, you shouldn’t just chuck more 3s. This years philosophy has been so weird to me.

ya, this kind of crap from Brad ain't it... I'd argue our Illini beat reporters do a good job but are arguably a little too "kid gloves" with the questions sometimes. The fact that Brad got defensive and isn't taking full responsibility for how terrible his team is right now... just oozes arrogance
I strongly believe the very last word is one of the main issues. You hear a coach talk about his/her players reading to many of the clippings saying how great they are, I'm pretty sure our coach has done way way to much of that himself. I feel Brad needs to step back and look at himself in the mirror and admit his players are direct reflections of him. When I see an uninterested coach on the sidelines, I can almost guarantee you will also see some uninterested players.

DGL shows his loyalty and commitment to the team last year when all of his eligible teammates leave besides one other. (who decides to redshirt)

Always hustles on every play when in the game and brings in positive energy constantly. A true EDG!

He is our best finisher at the rim and has the fastest first step to get there, IMO.

He has taken on the role of being the team leader as a sophomore and seems to be trying to do a good job at it.

He shoots us to a tie in a game where we are struggling to score and for his reward is taken out of the game for someone who is 0 fer the game. Then he is not started in OT.

I'll be the first to admit DGL is my favorite player on the team. I've been bothered by this since the end of the game last night. I can't help but wonder what has happened to "there is no guaranteed playing time here" and "you earn your playing time here". He hasn't earned more time? Am I drinking too much DGL Kool aid? Someone please help me make sense out of this.

Sure, but at some point, when our team is averaging 28% from 3 in Big Ten play.. the writing is on the wall that we just aren't a good shooting team.. AKA, saying we didn't shoot well isn't a surprise anymore

If we keep taking that many 3 and keep turning the ball over we are going nowhere.Jakucionis is not a 1st round pick in the nba poor ball handling

It’s time to pull an NHL coaching move and yank the starting goalie to send a message.
F$ck the NIL bs.
Sunday starters should be KJ, DGL, Riley, Tre, and Rez.
Boswell to spell KJ and DGL, and BH off the bench.

I just might join my brother in a one week Illinois sports blackout.

I'd have to watch the game again but it feels like we've given up on paint touches without Tomi. Our offense has become stagnant without him and we're taking more low quality perimeter shots without attempting to drive to the rim or move the ball around. I'm curious on Boswell's shooting percentages off the dribble. KJ, DGL, and RIley are the only players I trust doing that but I haven't seen the percentages.

My first and only Brad shot, I don't normally do this. Huge Brad fan and what he has brought to Illinois. BUT...

The reason Brad has made excuses since the USC loss is because our offense is 100% on Tyler. He won't say outright that Tyler's scheme was bad or Tyler made no adjustments based on who was on the court. It's a cop-out. He's blamed officiating and players being out instead of publicly calling Tyler out. (It's not the case behind closed doors, but it's causing Brad to fall into bad, excuse-ridden mindset)

Side note - I am a fan of Tyler, he is really bright and has good analytics to back up his ideas. But the impact of Tyler being around Illinois is hurting Brad and what he stood for, current assistants and our culture. All the credit Tyler got for our elite 8 run, and rightfully so, he should be getting the same questions for our lack of offensive adjustment to players being out and fouls being called differently. It's just not happening because Brad is covering for him.

EVEN IN THE NEBRASKA POSTGAME he mentions Nebraska's FT attempts at home vs. away. It is making him look weak. Brad of 2 years ago would have made fart noises about this performance.
You’d feel better if he threw Tyler under the bus and publicly called him out? I understand all the frustration with the offense, but I don’t want the HC of any team I root for calling out an AC publicly. What is the benefit of that?

People read way too much into press conferences. You think a HC wants to do a presser after a loss? You think you’re going to get some wonderful insight from a presser after a loss (or for that matter even a win)? As far as I know, the coaches are required to do press conferences just like those stupid in game and halftime one or two question interviews.

You seem to have said that behind closed doors BU is calling Tyler out. That’s how it should be done. We need adjustments being made that improve results. That hasn’t happened, and fans and press have a right to criticize that and be mad. We don’t need a HC publicly calling out an AC to make fans feel better.

After the 2022-23 roster, I would have never thought Brad would have gone young again. He did that this year and look at what's happening. I just don't understand how you can switch back to that type of roster after what you had last year. Frustrating with his stubbornness.

I’m sure this will be a redundant comment, but Ben has to go to the bench. White is very inconsistent but I like his motor. Terrible shooting, DGL gets to the basket and Riley has been playing better. Once Tomi is healthy and back is go with KJ DGL Riley Johnson and Tomi. They played a nice hi low
game before Tomi got sick

A few weeks ago on this board people (many) were acting like we were going to win the B1G and that this team was going to make a run in the big dance. Now, suddenly, this same team can't figure out how to win a game and will be lucky to get into the round of 32.

Brad has an eye for talent but his coaching leaves lots to be desired. Lots.

You are absolutely correct on drop coverage. We are allowing teams to take their best shooters hands to kkkkmncome off a ball screen and with drop coverage he usually has a 12-15 foot good look. There are several ways you can change things up. A hard hedge, hedge a recover. A hard double, which is what Loyola did with Ayo and completely threw us off our game. Drop coverage is killing us right now
