Wherever this team eats …

Getting to the point where I feel we may never get to witness this greatness again …

When people come into our house, I want them to be afraid that it’s gonna be a brawl … And with this team and last years team too, I don’t feel it … We ain’t got no toughness … No Dawgs … No EDGs …

I don’t think any team comes into Champaign and fears anything. Teams look like they are very comfortable over the past few years.

Btw, it is entirely possible that "Friggin' Nebraska Basketball" is some version of "Freakin' Indiana Football" this season and we look back at this loss in a COMPLETELY different light 10 weeks from now. People need to chill.
No, even if they are very good, we are at home and are a top-15 team. We should win this game even if it is the best Nebrasketball team of any of our lifetimes (it may well be!).

I haven’t read through this whole thread. I’ve read enough to know we have the usual sides after a loss. We have the ‘doom and gloom’ side and we have the ‘we’ll be okay let’s move on crowd’. For the record I’m somewhere in between.

My question is; if Nebraska misses that last shot and we go to OT do we pull out a win? I think I’m 50/50, I really don’t know.
Our last lead was at 4-2 and Nebraska led for 37 minutes of the game, so doubt we'd have won in OT.

+10! When the fanbase and admin accepts mediocrity, there's no incentive to be elite.
You’re either a new fan or young if you think this version of Illinois FB & B-Ball are mediocre. When I was in college from 12-17, football had 20 TOTAL wins and went to one bowl game and basketball only went to 1 tournament.

Spare me that we are “mediocre”

I think we should make a distinction between factions of the "fanbase" (and by the way, I highly doubt you'd walk the walk and tell Josh Whitman to his face that you think he accepts mediocrity because the fanbase does, like he's some sort of Cretin).

There is the faction who are happy to be "in the game" and love seeing Illinois play in big games and have fun and smash guitars. We'll call these "Fantastics!"

Then there is the faction who are not satisfied with that because they demand being ELITE and who make others ponder the meaning of life a bit. We'll call these the "Fanatics."

To each their own, but I find sports message boards a lot more pleasing when there aren't so many of the latter cohort active after losses.

I generally agree- as I literally posted that on Wednesday- but man alive, Nebraska is ranked and just destroyed Wisconsin- if you can't get your guys up to play a really good ranked team at home- You ain't the right guy to coach at Illinois.

Fair enough. For me, it's getting old and exhausting when words like "elite," "high ceilings" and "he's tough" are being verbalize when it's far from reality.

A five-year-old knew last year's KJ was a TO machine, but he still played PG most of the time. He was dribbling like 25 seconds of the shot clock.

Both twins should be posting up a ton more; they have proven they can score inside. I'm good with an occasional three from them, but get majority of your points from inside the paint.

Yes, we "should," but if Nebraska hovers around the top 15 all year too, we'll look back and be far less doom 'n gloom about a last possession loss.

You must be too young, because we never used to lose at home. So spare me with the we are not mediocre.

#462
R2 losses are ok with you? You're the problem accepting mediocrity.

You spare me with your "winning" attitude here.

An offense that could get your two seven feet centers the ball in the paint occasionally would help. They really don't do much good 20 ft. from hoop 90% of the time.

They say Kylan is... I sure hope he isn't based on what I watch on the court- So many of our worst timed shots are from him- his on ball defense at times has been awful- key plays when we need him to be great he's reaching in on guys and hacking... Just losing basketball. Literally our toughest and most consistent player is a scrawny freshman (who I love) but that's just sad..

I wouldn’t even rate Brad as a top 5 coach in the BIG. He does well at recruiting, but lacks in game adjustments and I don’t believe he always has his team playing at the top of their game.

I have made this point, some people on here make the point that we are better now than we were with grace and that’s true. But what we are is a top 32 team which is mediocre. We will be dancing and to some, that is acceptable but we will never be a team that competes for S16’s and higher every year if Brad does not get guys in here who can flat out play ball. We have average shooters at best. We have not had a pure shooter in years. We need a Bradford type guy who can put the free of god into teams with his ability to shoot the three. If we had a guy like that, we would not have teams closing down on our drivers. This team would be so much better if we would move the ball and set solid screens. This ole’ fake screening we do does nothing. We are not setting solid screens. We are standing around tossing the ball around like we are in Jr High. Nebraska was moving constantly until they found not only a good shot but a better shot. I will say this and I have been saying it for 5 years, Brad is not the guy. We are a middle of the pack B1G team. I hate to say it but we have proven to be just that.

Yeah, I know it's a pipe dream. But imagine where the Illini would be over the last 9 years (with the talent they've had) with a coach like Izzo or that idiot Hurley. You think the "Elite" coaches would put up with the crap that Brad has allowed to go on these past 9 years? You think Izzo loses to Loyola as a #1 seed? No way.
BU is not, nor will ever be a legend. Nice guy maybe. I want a winner.

#469
I would ask him if he's ok with a home loss to Nebraska.

The coach throws the word "elite" and "high ceilings" out there. If BU and his staff demand it, why wouldn't I demand it.

If I saw Mr. Whitman, I have no problems expressing opinion.

You do you, and I'll be me. You ok with that?

Play a high low with the twins with AS, Wags and Bam and we can score at will. The ball should go to the paint every time. Tomi on to and Z in the paint. We are good enough with motion and a high Low scheme to draw fouls. We had two many instances of having the ball for 7 seconds and jacking a bad three. Motion, Motion and more Motion is how this team can win.

A big part of the frustration is that the team is CAPABLE of locking in on defense and shutting the water off but they don't do it consistently enough. Too many mental mistakes that make the scheme look worse than it is. Now there is definitely debate to be had about whether the scheme plays to the players strengths but its still way better than whatever passive garbage we saw last year.

On offense it was just so stagnant. Nebraska made life difficult because they move and screen off the ball constantly. For us they were able to completely load up on one side of the floor because there was no player or ball movement. The fact that they still scored was more about individual skill than anything.

Brad said in the radio interview that they had several bad days of practice following the high of the win against OSU. Why is that allowed to happen? Im contrasting that with Shauna Green who was recently talking about how they were having a bad practice and she stopped it to bring the team together to ask them what was going on. Thats true leadership, setting a standard, making sure everyone knows if they are falling short, and helping them figure out how to meet it.

And Im going to harp on this again but we have 0 home court advantage. The two short times fans got engaged the team seemed so much more energized but otherwise the crowd/Krush was completely dead. Hell there were plenty of people sitting down during pregame introductions/tip off and almost nobody stands for the 3 in 1/Alma Mater. Its gotten really sad to watch the death of the fanbase and tradition.

#473
Yeah, I’ve really grown tired of hearing the word “Elite”.

#474
Watching from TV I was not very impressed with the crowd today. There were several times where I thought the team had done enough to deserve the place exploding and it didn’t. People can’t be bothered to stand up and cheer I guess when a team is trying to make a run.

My take: We were at our B game…Nebr on their A game yet we still should have won. I normally try to avoid how the stripes make a difference but this one was pathetic. The Davis getting a rebound foul at the line was insane… Tomi twice played good D and got the foul… wtf? Wager hits the deck… no call? These are difference makers!
My hat is off to Nebr for a tough game… but should have been ours!
We play a little better… the calls dont change the outcome.
I like what this team can be and think our time will come when it matters!
