This is exactly right. Brad makes too damn much money to lose to Nebraska under home under any circumstances. Fans have endured too many bewildering losses - especially at home - in the last five years, and it's killing the team's seeding and ability to make a run in March. I'm running out of patience with this regime.

Switching consistently on defense is bad coaching- it teaches players it's ok to get beat on defense- that if it gets hard defensively- you can just put in minimal effort and pass off your guy to someone else. It's hard to stick your guy, it's hard to get through a screen, it's hard to play defense... Consistent switching is easy- but it leads to BAD defense.

Our defense is mostly the same issues as last year.. New defensive coordinator, but no changes. Honestly though, what did we expect to be different? We recruited slow footed guys, guys that aren't physically tough.. Consistent theme aside from scheme- we just don't play tough and have no identity.. That is on your head coach- you take on the identity of your coach. I appreciate Underwood is so flexible- and Werner has often complimented him for that..I somewhat agree ish.. But look at Izzo, his team and what he coaches them to do is pretty much identical to what he did 10 years ago.. They are tough, usually rebound the ball like mad men, and they play fast and get out in transition... We don't have an identity because our coach tries the new flavor of ice cream for players and scheme every other year..

It's such an indictment on Underwood that this far into the season Underwood is "having" to play Ben and Jake so much and AT THE SAME TIME. Neither of them should play meaningful minutes for a high level team- period. Do you see either of those guys playing that much time with Bama, Uconn, Tennessee?

I'm still stuck on our head coach saying it was worthless to get Tomi the ball in the paint- if you get one of your best players involved in the game- even if he isn't score- there's at least an opportunity for him to "feel himself" and grow in his confidence and intensity. Side note: Big Z has earned more playing time than Tomi at this point- and I don't think it's debatable.

I’ve watched that last play ten times now, and have all the same questions.

Plus, why not more pressure? It looked like we were going to press and as soon as they inbounded the ball we backed off and they walked the ball down the floor. Then dribbled at the top of key for like 5 seconds while their offense went into motion.

And all this coming after a timeout.
On that last play, Nebraska brought Mast and Sandfort to either side of the top of the key to set screens, giving Hoiberg the option to go either way depending on the defense. He chose Sandfort's side, which was probably the way the play was designed, and Sandfort just popped out to the 3 pt line and was wide open. Garcia came from the baseline and slid down to the paint. If Tomi agressively came out to stop the ball, you just drop it to Garcia for a dunk. Lawrence floated to the open area on the other side. Hoiberg had a clean look from 6 ft if he wanted to pull up with the floater, but probably decided Tomi was too tall and didn't want to risk it.

That play had 4 potential clean looks. If the defense sucks in after the pick, you can kick out to Sandfort for a clean look. If Tomi comes up to stop the ball, you drop to Garcia for a dunk, if you stay back Hoiberg has a shot in the paint, and what we saw the kick to the other side for a good look.

Why don't I ever see us run a set play? I am no student of the game, and I keep hearing Tyler is a great offensive coach, but when I turn the game on I see 4 or even 5 guys outside the 3 pt line. I see very lazy movement and then someone either drives or shoots a 3. I get tired of seeing opponents draw up a play off of a timeout or at the end of halves and get a clean look. I can't even remember the last time we had a play drawn up that worked. I think there was one game last year maybe the Oregon game where it was like holy crap who is this team, they're actually running an offense. Then it went right back to 3s and drives.

HFS, to those of you calling for Brad to be fired...
relax calm down GIF

You're all acting like the season ended with this loss. We drop a stinker every year at home...so what? There are A LOT of games to be played.
After a bad loss, I've seen people reacting strongly to some pretty clearcut coaching weaknesses that are rearing their heads on our team, but I haven't seen anyone call for Brad to be fired. Can you quote the specific post you're referring to?

We were a 10 point favorite at home.
Cbb world thinks a lot of us.
We dont deserve that.....

Our coaching and effort are suspect

Every game we let a player from other team go off. It's been going on for many years.

Still pissed off about this L. I am so tired of the Jekyll/Hyde with the Beloved. Beyond frustrating, Get your heads on straight, put 5 guys on the court that care and hate to lose. It pisses me off that losing doesn't seem to bother them as much as it should. Somebody needs to step up and have a players only meeting. Does anybody on this team has enough sack to set teammates straight

We got pretty good games from Wagler, Boswell, and Stojakovic but not much from anyone else. Some nights thats good enough, but not when you allow 52% from the field. Tomi needs to be better.

Teams just seem way too comfortable on offense against us. It’s the same story of a team shooting lights out. At this point it’s not being unlucky, it’s because our defense is horrid
Tomi would flash open in the high post against the zone but the KJ skill of getting him the ball with proper timing is missing on this year's team.

ps - I hope pru survived this game.

From the top down the mentality is "happy to be here". You saw it after the Alabama loss. You saw it heading into the UConn loss.

I'm trying to find where all of the criticism was after beating Tennessee on a neutral floor and OSU on the road. Are we going down the path that we won despite of our coaches there?

I know it's a what have you done for me lately profession, but I think this board takes dual personalities to a whole new level.

Did we play a great game? No. Were we awful? No. Was Nebraska really good and are they currently on a heater? Absolutely.

Not sure why we're not giving them a ton of credit, tipping our cap, then moving on? We beat them in pretty much every statistical category, but one. Three point shooting. They knocked down 46% and the vast majority weren't of the blown coverage, stand and line it up variety. They were pulling up for three on fast breaks, shooting them over 7 footers, shooting balls from 24/25 feet.....

That type of shooting is insanely hard to do and they probably will not come close to replicating that again this year and if they do, they'll win. I don't care if they're playing Purdue or Michigan.

That one stat was the game. We need to quit the chicken little stuff, quit the ridiculous finger pointing and just give those guys credit. We dropped games like this on Oregon and Indiana last year. Everything we put up found net. It's not sustainable, but it was one of those nights for them. Tough that it came against us.

A players only meeting? We just came off of two quad 1 road/neutral wins and we lost a heartbreaker, on a buzzer beater, by a team that dropped a 46% three point shooting night on our heads. We won pretty much every other statistical category.

I'm not sure what you expect? Do you want to see them flipping chairs over or hear reports of them punching each other and tearing up the locker room? I'm sure it wasn't a fun post game speech and I'm sure plenty of guys were upset.....if that makes you feel better.

It's a loss and breaking news, we're going to lose more games this year, but we're going to win a lot more games than we lose.

Thank God you're not a coach. Part of the job is managing the emotions of 18-22 year old kids/young men so that one loss doesn't turn into two. This would not be a good line of work for you or many on this board.

Just give Nebraska credit for an outrageously good shooting night and focus on the next one. No team only, soul searching speeches required.

P.s....they shot 54% in their 30 point win over Wisconsin last week. I wonder if their staff is being run out of Madison?

Morez would have made a big difference for us today!

Who cares?

He didn’t wanna be here, and then disparaged Illini legends along the way. His defense against a horrific Maryland team today looked quite familiar to what I saw last year from him.

The caping for that dude amongst some of the fanbase is bizarre bevavior

Fact of the matter is this … I don’t see ANY EDGs on that court anymore …

Until that changes … These frustrating losses and getting bounced before the 2nd weekend will continue to happen …

Who’s the leader on this team ??? I don’t see anyone stepping up …
Every great Illini team had those EDG leaders. Douglas and Altenberger. Battle and Anderson. Williams and Head. Trent and Damonte. Guys that would defend you all over the court, out rebound you despite their size and frustrate the heck out of the other team while still being able to hit big shots. Don't see those type of guys on this team.

I remember Trent and Damonte’s senior season…

The back to back Marquette close loss and Cincy blowout had this board in shambles.

Exactly. The selective memory is insane.
And there is an exemplary EDG that Brad retained. He’s on the bench and I suppose it’s somehow Brad’s fault that he badly injured his knee in the offseason.

I am still sticking to my R2 loss prediction. Obviously, nothing today convinced me.

It's the defense that's going to hurt the Illini once again. To bad, Ty got hurt and Morez left. You need grinders out there, and I really don't see it with this team and their softness.

The "One guy's not going to beat you" mentality has to stop now; it's sending a message to the defense: "Hey, let him score 50, it's ok." I equate it to LaRussa telling his White Sox players not to hustle down the line when the players should be hustling down the line.

No damn urgency. So be it, then. Eliminate "elite" in your vocabulary, and accept the tight R1 game, then a R2 loss.
agree, when a guy scores almost 20 over his season average, yes one guy absolutely can beat you, especially in a close game. sandfort scores his average and we win by 13-14 points

Didn't say anything about it being anyone's fault. Just stated that if you want to be better than just good, you need those types of players on your team and we have seen those types of teams and those players in the past.

#544
Yes … And I don’t think Crocker is any better …

This team has no identity defensively …

I don’t expect this team the way it’s constructed to be elite defensively but we certainly could scheme better than we have based on the pieces we have to work with …
Plus, when Thortom or Sandfort are going off your head coach shouldn't wait til half to adjust. Should've put length on Thorton sooner told someone to.not leave Sandfort to help. Why wait 20 minutes to do it. Thats on BU

#545
You realize 1.3ppp is elite offense, right? And putting our worst defender in a game that we lost due to defense probably wouldn’t have helped, right?

I’m not saying defense didn’t matter. I’m saying a point guard who can break the zone might’ve helped us score enough to win anyway, get it?

#546
I thought Bam is who should pressure the ballot thecend and others but we had 7fters inside to protect at the rim. I don't think it's likely Sam Hoiberg is going to score the ball. We seem to forget who does what we'll for the opponent and help out too much. We shouldn't be leaving shooters to stop guys that really aren't scorers. That happened at the end and with sandfort a lot early .

#547
It always amazes me how many people act like Brad is some legend and we couldn’t possibly do any better …

I like Brad … I think he’s a good coach … But let’s not go acting like he’s elite … Because he’s not …

1 second weekend in 9 years …

If we want to consider ourselves an ELITE program … 1/9 doesn’t cut it …
My big concern is at the presser post game. It’s the same exact song and dance after every let down game each season. Rinse and repeat excuses. Fix the damn problems and grow as a coach! Just frustrating to be in the same position every year.

And what position is that?

Brad is one of the worst lineup managers in Div 1
That's just nonsense, but it's a typical reaction to a close loss. I have to tell you I think Nebraska was the team with the leaky defense. We scored 80 pts. almost at will. Wide open looks aplenty and clever ball movement in the paint. This was just a great game between two quality teams. Somebody had to win, somebody had to lose. It happens, and frequently. I was amazed at the crowd size.

Maybe instead of Fletch photos, get some cardio for Andrej. A 21 year old tapping out after 3 minutes of game action? [That included 6 stops in game action]

First, I know I’m getting old, but have my math skills really deteriorated that much? That looks like 4.5 minutes of game time not 3. Second, did he “tap out”? I really don’t know if he requested to come out. But it is not uncommon for a coach to get a player a quick blow so he can finish game strong. That is what happened. He was only out about a minute twenty and then finished the game.

I’m not saying AJ is in incredible shape, but he did have a knee injury early in season and then missed about a week of practice before the UConn game due to an ankle issue. Maybe that has something to do with cardio issues if he indeed is experiencing any. And seems a strange game to call him out on it when he picks up the slack rebounding left by 2 in 23 minutes by Mirk (he’d been averaging 9.5 rpg). Oh, and by the way, during that brief rest Illini were outscored by . . . zero.
