There’s no way you’re being serious. You don’t hand the other team go ahead free throws on the last possession of the game 🤦🏼‍♂️
Exactly. I have seen this suggestion on other sites. This suggestion is simply losing basketball. They are called free throws for a reason. I have watched basketball for over 60 years at a lot of levels and have never seen it once. If you are a coach and implement this philosophy and your opponent makes a free throw, you look like a fool if your team does not score.

Hoiberg is working with a fraction of the resources and salary he would be working with here, and is outperforming us this season in spite of this. A loss to Georgia State with Nebraska resources isn't anywhere near as devastating as our number 1 seeded teem looking outclassed against Loyola Chicago with Illini resources.
Just a reminder that Loyola ended that season as the #10 team on KenPom and #13 on Torvik.

Maybe this is just looking from a one sided perspective - but I feel like one of the issues with our fanbase is that, compared to other passionate fan bases, we never appear to be that crazy, vigorous, or... just have that "us against the world" mentality in terms of supporting OUR team against the opposition. But rather pessimistic and negative when we lose a game... which doesn't seem to back our team up, but rather throw them under the bus. I really can't imagine it's all too helpful. I believe TSJ described us too as one of the more "nervous" fan bases.
IMHO, it stems from the Loyola loss in the tournament.

We should have beat Loyola, obviously the low point of brads tenure i agree.

That said, after losses like this I see the “well we need to make sure we get a good seed for higher odds of advancing” and it just gives me PTSD the committee will always get it wrong for us lol.

Reading is a skill. My entire post is that it is the players that need to get their act together, go back and look at my posts, I never mention the coaches once. My original post that you chose to quote and respond to was that I thought it was time to call a players only meeting. And for the players to take account for their lackluster performance, not one thing about the coaches. I see that you like to believe your posts/opinions are truth.
Who is gonna be the player on this roster to take charge of a players only meeting? I dont see a take charge fire and brimstone get down to brass tacks guy in the inventory.

So, here's where I'm going to balk at your comments(which are well thought out unlike others). If we're going to cut the wins vs OSU and Tennessee off at the knees because of how they looked, how can we not elevate Nebraska based on how they looked by absolutely beating TF out of Wisconsin(30 point win, shooting 54%), then coming into our house and beating us shooting 46% from three?

It can't go both ways. We can't degrade two teams that we beat, but not elevate a team that's 10-0, looking great? Many of our fans find a negative narrative, then stick to it without stepping back and taking a rational point of view.

You know, last year everyone across the country crapped on Indiana football because it's Indiana...they suck. Our fans wanted Bielema's head after getting smacked by them this year. It's 10000% because of the name on the front of the jersey and as of right now....it's the situation with Nebraska basketball. It's a sh*t loss because we simply can't lose to a Nebraska basketball team because again....it's Nebraska. Well, maybe we should pump the brakes and see how it all plays out.

Honestly, other fan bases dumped on our football team's success last year AND this year. Why? Because we're Illinois football and we're supposed to be awful.
You’re looking for rational thoughts and words from Loyalty posters?

No. I don't care about exhibition games.

I just find it funny when we lose one it's end of the world but when we win one then all of a sudden we are legit
It's insanity. After Wednesday, some of the same people who sit here today(and yesterday)with the flaming pitchforks going after everyone associated with the program.....had us headed to Indy after beating Ohio State. If we beat Missouri handily, we'll be headed back to Indy.

Great post because what we saw yesterday is the type of offense Brad wants. All five guys who can shoot with a couple of bigs that can score and equally (or more) importantly be able to pass out of the post. That's what he envisioned last year and he double downed on it this year.
I grew up playing motion offense. Ball going into the paint and either score or kick out to an open player. I keep thinking of the 15 pass possession against NW in 05. Poetry in motion. The ball went in the paint 3 times and out 3 times before Dee hits the three. We have the players to run a high post motion offense. Moving the defense side to side wears teams down. We need the twin towers to touch the ball every possession and the three guards need to run through the post to confuse and move the defense. I just do not understand why we cannot run this simple scheme

So to use the kind of silly math y'all like, he's made 1 second weekend in the 16 seasons since he started at Iowa St. He's 1 for 16!

Edit: misread the original post, have corrected my comment.
BTW, I love how BU's successes get written off as, "well that was because he had Ayo or TSJ, not because he's a good coach" but nobody points out that Hoiberg's only second weekend appearance he had a 2nd team All-American & Big 12 POY, 3rd team All-American, and a third guy who has played 544 career NBA games.

Nebraska will never be a basketball giant. But Hoiberg gets the most from his players and he has a senior led team that could make noise this year. Like I have said, Nebraska’s ceiling should be our floor. They do not have the resources that we do. But Fred can flat out coach. They are a candidate to be a top 4 seed in the B1G tourney. They are quick to the ball and have a high BB IQ. For example, two times they called TO during a scramble or OOB play. We have the ball on the floor and we call nothing but they take the ball from us, call the TO and get it. They are heady. We make too many mental errors. We had the opportunity late to take the lead and what happens, Ben shoots a quick three after we score on the inside on the last few possessions. We just do not think. We react and it mostly costs us.

I am SO glad that all the posters have identified all of the problems and issues with the team and provided solutions that will result in us going undefeated the rest of the season and for the next 10 years with the Loyalty hive hive mind serving as the new coaching staff.
He’s a great recruiter.
A very good evaluator of talent
Below average at roster construction and X’s and O’s.
IMHO

keep in mind we have over a week to go before our next game...so we have multiple opportunities for much of the same

On that last play, Nebraska brought Mast and Sandfort to either side of the top of the key to set screens, giving Hoiberg the option to go either way depending on the defense. He chose Sandfort's side, which was probably the way the play was designed, and Sandfort just popped out to the 3 pt line and was wide open. Garcia came from the baseline and slid down to the paint. If Tomi agressively came out to stop the ball, you just drop it to Garcia for a dunk. Lawrence floated to the open area on the other side. Hoiberg had a clean look from 6 ft if he wanted to pull up with the floater, but probably decided Tomi was too tall and didn't want to risk it.

That play had 4 potential clean looks. If the defense sucks in after the pick, you can kick out to Sandfort for a clean look. If Tomi comes up to stop the ball, you drop to Garcia for a dunk, if you stay back Hoiberg has a shot in the paint, and what we saw the kick to the other side for a good look.

Why don't I ever see us run a set play? I am no student of the game, and I keep hearing Tyler is a great offensive coach, but when I turn the game on I see 4 or even 5 guys outside the 3 pt line. I see very lazy movement and then someone either drives or shoots a 3. I get tired of seeing opponents draw up a play off of a timeout or at the end of halves and get a clean look. I can't even remember the last time we had a play drawn up that worked. I think there was one game last year maybe the Oregon game where it was like holy crap who is this team, they're actually running an offense. Then it went right back to 3s and drives.
Everything stated here correct. Agree completely with last paragraph. Since we need to run a very efficient offense to score a lot of points( close to 90+) to make up for our below average defense, the times our offense stagnates in the half court( which occurs quite often) really impacts our winning the game chances.

We saw glimpses of being able to penetrate the opponents set half court defense and get layups or kick outs for open shots when MP had his few opportunities but he seemed to not be ready to finish plays or play acceptable defense against the physicality and athleticism of the high major teams in the games he did get a bit of PT.

What bothers me is that we almost never have run a good out of bounds play, last possession play or schemed up a good defensive stop play at the end of a game in the BU era that I can recall. Admittedly, I'm still steamed we lost this game so maybe looking back with a biased and emotional viewpoint. I'm hoping Nebraska finishes really strong so this loss doesn't look too bad but consigning ourselves to a 4/5 seed at best in the tournament doesn't bode well for getting to the second round and that should be a reasonable goal every year given Brad's pay scale.

It's so frustrating to see in year 2 of a coaching change that Indiana is killing it in football and Michigan looks like a freight train in basketball and Florida won a natty in I think year 3 or 4 of Golden's tenure. I'll admit I'm thinking why not us.

To put things in perspective, Ben was brought in for defensive purposes late in this game.

Nothing against Ben. It just is telling about the build and structure of this team. Jake and Ben should never ever ever ever ever be on the court at the same time for a Big Ten or any high major program
It also speaks to the defensive liabilities of those players who were replaced.

Collins is in that same situation of great coach at mediocre program. Both have won Big Ten Coach of the Year because of it.

We're too good a program for that path to that award, which means Underwood competes with the likes of Painter and Izzo, which is why he hasn't won it.

This is my #1, #2 and #3 concern is with Brad. I'm not sure how money plays into all of this, but this roster/style of play.....I'm just not a huge fan of it. That said, I just want to win and if this is what does it, sign me up.

I can’t overemphasize how confused and lost we looked on defense in the final 10 minutes. Honestly, the whole game. I think there were multiple possessions where our guards were clearly in a zone but our bigs would switch into man. Guys are pointing, turning around, pushing each other back into matchups, getting lost on switches. Total lack of communication. All of that stuff is 100% avoidable. It’s not for lack of effort — it’s lack of preparedness, and it’s mostly on the coaching staff. For all we drill rebounding in practice, there HAS to be a greater emphasis on having multiple looks to throw at your opponent defensively where all 5 guys are in sync. I’ve never seen so many blown assignments and lay-ups for a team.
The Illinois radio crew pointed out that on at least one possession part of the team was in zone and the rest were not.

Why hold Hoiberg to such a low standard? Saying Nebraska will never be a basketball power is like saying Indiana will never be a football power. Nebraska has great fan support. A great stadium. If he’s so great why the limited success?

Being okay with being consistently mediocre should be harder.

Not sure why people are saying we played great… we hit shots (thank goodness) but our offense stagnated and literally every time we got an ounce of momentum we put up a brain dead shot. We did not play great. But this team has a LOT more fight than last years team. That will win us a game in march or 2
I agree. To say we played great and lost to Nebraska by 3 at home is somewhat confusing to me.
