New NIT competitor

#1
Fox Sports has announced a competitor to the NIT that will begin next year and will be called the College Basketball Crown: https://www.foxsports.com/presspass...imagined-postseason-college-hoops-tournament/

It will be a 16-team tournament with 2 automatic bids from each of the network's broadcast partners (B1G, Big East, and Big XII) and at-large teams filling out the remaining spots. The entire tournament will take place on this equivalent week next year with games airing on Fox and FS1.

I imagine I'll pay as much attention to this as the NIT, which is to say close to zero.

I'm rooting for ISU and actually have my DVR set to record the game. Terre Haute is pretty darn close. That's where we go when we are going to the big city.

Normally I barely know who is playing.

I hope we never have to play in this tournament
If the earlier rumors are true, then contractually speaking, we will be obligated to play in this tournament if selected. Figuratively speaking, if we never play in it then we either make the NCAA tournament every year (awesome) or we suck so bad we don't even make this tournament (not awesome).

I agree though with the OP. Hope we never play.

I've always thought they should seed NCAA tourney losers into the later rounds of the NIT. That would be interesting.
I don't think this would be very attractive. Do you think Kentucky is going to want to pick up after that upset and play in a second rate tournament? So you'll be left with 9 and 10 seeds. And I don't think that would really add much to the NIT.

I will always follow any B1G team in the post-season.

I was hinting at the awesome scenario where we are making the NCAA Tournament every year.

I realize it won't work but it would be interesting to see teams like Illinois, Tennessee, NC , Arizona and so on, in the NIT semis trying to redeem their seasons. If bluebloods KY or Kansas or Duke chose to go home and saulk, let them. The biggest problem would be players opting out like they do in the football bowl games in order to prepare for the draft.

Is there an enforcement mechanism for the B1G, B12, and Big East here? This tourney is extremely late in the year for "mediocre" teams. With the way the portal works these days, I envision opt outs impacting the quality of the games (much like bowl season).

I think this will ultimately flop after a year or two. The only plus is the location in Vegas, which might lead to some attendance; otherwise, it feels dumb.

I would much rather have an expansion of up to 8 teams to the NCAA Tourney compared to this (for two to three play in games in each region).
