Bears have agreed to a contract extension with Cairo Santos. 5 year, $16 million deal. The final two years of the deal are voidable, which brings it to a 3 year deal at $11 million maximum.
The real reason why the sports books are shifting in favor of the Bears. :)

For someone smarter than I on the financial implications of this, how does a such a maneuver impact logistically work? More immediate-term relief with less flexibility longer-term?

As I understand it, pretty much yeah. Short term relief but potential long-term pain. Though the pain may not be as much if salary cap is able to go up.

Bears sign Andy Dalton for $10MM plus up to $3MM in incentives.

Last year, Dalton had a worse record as starting QB, worse Cmp%, worse TD%, worse Y/A, Y/C, Rtg, QBR, and Sk% than Mitch Trubisky had last year. This comparison is just as grim if you compare totals from the last three years. Pretty much every predictor has Trubisky signing a contract for significantly less than what the Bears are paying Dalton.

So, another master stroke by QB sleuth Pace here, I'm thinking.

I was hoping to ship out Foles, keep Trubisky and draft someone early (not trading up and giving away the next 3 1st rounders).

Underwhelming again. I’m not seeing the vision to build anything. I fully expect a year from now we are in basically the same position.

Dalton-Foles is really the best they can do? They may as well bring Mitch back.

Rooting for this franchise is a sad, sad life.

Pace’s crappy past moves have hamstrung him moving forward, but methinks he must have been told his job isn’t in jeopardy in the short run.

Dalton is a bridge QB to the rookie QB they draft on either Day 1 or Day 2 and give the season to develop. They have a potential out on the Foles contract after this upcoming season where the dead cap hit would only be about $3.6 million if they decide to cut him then. Considering what's left out there at the QB position and since it now appears that Wilson isn't going to be traded and there wouldn't be enough capital to trade for Watson, Dalton is the next best option. If they decide to go full bore with a team built around power running and play action passing on offense, then Dalton will be a serviceable enough QB to have. They still have his former QB coach/offensive coordinator with the Bengals in Bill Lazor on the Bears staff as the Bears offensive coordinator. And the strong defense they have will still be there too.

The Bears are also bringing back Germain Ifedi on a 1 year $5 million deal and are reportedly having trade discussions with teams regarding Anthony Miller.

Dalton has been a statistically worse QB than Trubisky over the last three years based on pretty much any metric you want to pick, and the Bears just signed him for about twice what Trubisky is likely going to make whenever he signs.

If the Bears actually thought Dalton was any good, they could have signed him as a free agent last year. Instead, they sent a draft pick and spent quite a bit more money to acquire Foles. But now, they think Dalton is better than Foles?

The head coach’s refusal to game plan for the QB that he was specifically brought in to develop has led the GM to pay significantly more to go out and get worse and worse QBs.

And come draft time, that same GM is likely to trade a huge chunk of his picks to move up a few spots to draft the 4th or 5th best QB in this year’s class while praying that his head coach will deign to actually attempt to coach this QB who is likely to be a significantly worse prospect than the QB he previously refused to coach.

This is a disaster. There’s no other way to spin it. And if the question is, “Well, what should they have done?” The answer is start with canning all of Phillips, Pace and Nagy

No reason to pay Dalton 10m to be a bridge QB when you literally have someone who is at least as good as him rostered in Foles. Unless they move on from Foles this season, the move is absolutely baffling (assuming you want to be competitive). Spend half that (or less), get a career backup, and draft the hopeful successor. In a year where cap space is critical, spending 10m on a QB who is redundant at best has to be one of the biggest boneheaded moves the bears have made in the past decade.

I blame this teams troubles more on Pace than Nagy (though that's easy to say in the offseason.) Sorry to say, the two outcomes that best suit this team this year is a miraculous rookie QB season, or a disaster so bad that Pace/Nagy/Phillips are gone.

the problem is not only Phillips / Pace / Nagy
it’s first & foremost the McCaskeys

until they sell / become minority owners , nothing really will change . it’s like throwing off or rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic .

The Titanic only sank once.

Was listening to the SCORE a little bit today and apparently there is some buzz that the Bears might be releasing Kyle Fuller for cap reasons. Shouldn't get too worked up until/if it happens, but if so, it would definitely be torch and pitchfork time at Halas Hall.

HAHAHAHAHA . Pace cant even tie his shoes correctly
