Experimental rules suck, though I'll be going to quarters would allow more concessions sales, if there's enough of a gap in time.

And that Assembly Hall had better be rockin' on Tuesday night, Orange to the rafters.

And please, if it comes to pass, vanquish Illinois State. Western Michigan was bad enough. At least I didn't have to hear from anyone I knew. I know far too many people who went to Illinois State. Must. Defeat. ISU.:tsk:

Unless they are going to give away a lot of tickets, which I'm sure they can't do in this case, I don't see the crowd being very good. Probably better with the coaching change than it would have been, but still. 10-12k?

I will be really surprised if it is over 10k. I'm guessing 8k. But it sure would send a message to our future coach if we packed the place. Not happening though, and I can't complain because I won't be able to make the 6:15 start.

It will be interesting to see how playing time is handled. Maybe DJW and AJ get more tick. After the Michigan loss, Jamal was on the radio and said DJW was really tearing it up in practice the last few weeks.

May be less of attendance depending on possible snowy weather, as well. In spite of that, go Illini.

If we win this game, would we also get home court advantage for the next game? Or would we be playing at Utah/Boise State?

I believe the higher seed always has home court, so games against anyone but ISU would be in Champaign.
^^ sorta. Illinois will play at home first 2 rounds, play on the road in 3rd round no matter the opponent (SFC is booked during Quarterfinals).

What do the players say?

Any way to determine if the players are interested in the game?

If even faux interest comes from them, you might get a few more fans out there rooting for Malcolm and the seniors...

If uninterested, it does not matter if anyone shows.. frustrating again, because if the team accepts this outcome and reality, there is no easier path to NYC..
if they want to make the best of it.

So am I reading that right -- no more 1-and-1’s? Every foul beyond 4 per "segment" is 2 freethrows? That can really change your strategy when trying to foul to stop the clock in late game situations. Much less pressure on the 1st of 2, as opposed to the 1st in a 1-and-1. Anyone got stats on the average shooting percentage on the front end of a 1-and-1 vs. a 2-shot foul?

^This.

IU has to travel to Georgia Tech for their first round gamedue to renovations occurring at the other Assembly Hall. (Good thing we never had to deal with something like this when we were in an NIT before.) :D

Houston while still playing the game in the city of Houston itself won't actually be playing at their home arena due to renovations there as well. They'll be playing their first game in Texas Southern's gym.

Halves instead of quarters is one of the few things I prefer about college basketball's rules as opposed to the NBA. And the foul structure goes along with that.

Always worth it to experiment, but I am not inclined to see this as an improvement.

I'll give this a chance. Might make the end of a game less of a free-throw shooting contest.

It's up to the players now. Coaching factor is out the window in this game. The players have to feel embarrassed from the last two games. They must take it upon themselves to go out with their heads held high. Just go out and play.

Agreed, but I don't like getting rid of the 1-1. How many times have we seen a team miss the front end of a 1-1 late in a game? The 1-1 keeps things interesting and rewards good FT shooters.

At the very least, our seniors will get another opportunity to play at home. Hopefully we can make a deep run and get our younger players some more experience. Just don't let the season end with a clobbering at the hands of ISU please. Valpo without their best player is pretty much the easiest first round draw we could get. We should win as long as the team hasn't completely quit like they did last time we were in the NIT.

Some interesting potential matchups. If we manage to put together a win streak but seeding were otherwise to hold exactly:
1. local matchup with Valpo in Champaign
2. second round with Utah/Larry Krystowiak in Champaign (at a time when he may be in the mix for UI coach).
3. local quarterfinal at ISU - be interesting to see which team has more fans there.
4. Semifinal at Iowa
5. Possible final against Cal/Cuonzo.

I'm interested to see if there is any change in the rotation. There was talk in another thread about disagreements regarding the rotation. It will be interesting to see if it extended beyond Lucas.

If I've learned something in life is that you are always on someone's radar. So for Malcolm, Mav, and the 2017-18 players this can be a showcase or opportunity to gain experience. There are always lessons to be gained in playoff situations. Never a good reason to give up or not be competitive.

Basically, what they've done with the foul rules is change it to how it is for women's college BB, except they aren't doing official "quarters" and keeping it as halves.

In women's college BB, 4 10-minute quarters; 5th foul of the quarter results in a 2-shot bonus. (No 1-and-1's).

All they're doing here is just "playing on" past that 10-minute mark and resetting the fouls. I don't know why they wouldn't just go to 4 10-minute quarters.

Semis are in MSG, correct?

But aside from that, I hope locals can help pack the Hall (and Redbird if it comes to that). If I were anywhere closer I'd make it for tomorrow night's game.

Experimental Rules-

Wow, that's a lot of rules I wouldn't want implemented. 20 sec shot clock on front-court inbounds doesn't seem too bad. Going to quarters with fewer fouls seems like it puts even more subjectivity in the hands of the refs.

Worst possible scenario - but a fitting capstone on the Groce era - would be losing to ISU to become the third best school in Illinois...

I hope we play this tournament with a chip on out shoulder to show everyone how good we could have been.

I came here to post this. The article specifically stated Walker as someone disagreeing with the rotations. Now that he's in charge, it should be interesting.
