Help me understand the Zach Hamer hate that comes from this account. It comes across as a bit childish for someone I take to be super plugged into the program. Tonight’s defense was really good for 42 minutes until Northwestern figured out they could get a switch for Martinelli onto KJ and we had no answer. If you want to blame anyone, blame Brad and his son for the hero ball KJ three chucking offense we played once we took a 10 point lead. We had the #1 effective field goal defense in the country coming into this game. This is a spillover take from last year
Hamer is handcuffed on D by the focus on offensive lineups that feature guys like Ben and KJ who struggle to defend. As long as those guys are offensive cornerstones, Hamer has a tough assignment…KJ should play a lot regardless; Ben based on whether he’s hitting shots only.

Through 8 games so far all I am seeing of Ben is Luke Goode 2.0. Ben's role so far has been a spot up 3 point shooter and nothing else. We have seen very little of him playing in the mid range, hunting for matchups, and booty ball. Ben is 6'9 and all the coaching staff have him doing is spot up and take open look 3. When that is your only role on offense and you are a defensive liabilty, you have to be consistent when taking open 3s. I think one of the biggest question with this team and for Brad is what is going to be the real starting five? Riley is a good 3 point shooter like Ben is but Riley is also a better defender than Ben is in my opinion.

I don’t care if it’s Lebron James shooting it — a contested, fadeaway 2 with a hand in your face will always be a win for the defense.
Huh. That's an amazing point of view, given that we all just saw that shot used repeatedly tonight to beat our team.

Note that Barnhizer uses that shot all the time, it is not luck that he made them. And NW deliberately worked to get Barnhizer that shot.

Horrible comparison. Dude has like 70 starts in the NFL. Willing to give Ben more chances. If what happened to him tonight continues then 100% he should not start and minutes should be reduced.
Depends upon what you mean by "more chances." If you mean spot minutes in situations when we need to break a zone or when the other team doesn't have a great scoring threat at power forward yes. If you mean starting like he has previously, absolutely not.

Ben, Boswell and Riley missed shots. 1 of 18 from 3. Kj kept us in the game most of the night. Ben had good looks and just missed and chucking so many threes that will happen.
KJ had 20, 10, and 7 with 6 threes and 4 tos.. He was fine. Boswell missed some big lay ups and the game was very physically called . Only had 11 fts. When we take so.many threes Riley and Bemgotta hit more that 7% if they take 15

Up 5 with 2 minutes left in the game and the next sequence coming out of a timeout was taking a horrible 3 followed by immediately fouling NW sending them to the free throw line was nail in the coffin for us.

the way the game was called tonight
This game was called at LEAST three different ways throughout. This argument continues to lack any footing.

If you want to say that Riley was abused, then show numbers and film. Besides, this is all coming from your own assumption that calls for fewer Ben minutes meant more Riley minutes... when Will got 30 and Morez got 12.

If you feel like you're catching up now, take a pause and do more of that.

So I'll add another person to "didn't watch this game or doesn't want to recognize reality."

39 minutes, 3 points, 1-9 from the field. Torched defensively.

I'm trying to find the plus/minus from the game, but I'd bet a lot Humrichous had one of the worst ratings of the team.

Not sure why so many people are rushing to his defense. He just isn't a Big Ten player. If Underwood plays him more than 7-10 minutes a game, we're screwed.

Going to need an explanation why Ben played 39 minutes tonight when Morez continues to be one of the best players on the floor when he’s out there
unbelievable stubbornness on Brad's part. His postgame he flippin doubled down on it saying something along the lines of Ben's stats shooting the 3. Ok Brad, you go with your stats and I'll go with my eye test and feel for the game. Your boy is getting cooked on d and is 1-9 from 3 (they are literally picking on him and trying to get matchups against him). But nah, we'll keep our 5 star stud who plays his freakin butt off on the bench.

I really like Collins. He does a lot with very little.
No doubt he is good at x's and o's. He also is good at working officials, without coming off as a whiny jerk like Izzo. With about 7 minutes left in 2nd half, he had a mini meltdown with the officials (probably deserved a technical), I believe on Barnhizer missed dunk. After that, two straight possession we had shooting fouls (on plays that were not called all night).

He is in a perfect spot at NW.

Bottom line, this team does not understand how difficult it is to win the Big Ten. You cannot take no for an answer, you have to make layups, rebound and take care of the ball. If you don't do this consistently, you will not even be in the upper half of the Big Ten. This team will only learn how to win by losing....it just sucks because some of our players will lose and then head off to the NBA, something that is new to IL.

Sometimes, those who are so close to a situation can't see the reality of what is really going on.

I think there's waaaayyyyy too much blame shifted to Ben.

KJ's threes were killer, but otherwise he had a tough game. Started very sloppy, complained about calls, got abused on D, especially in OT.

What happened to scoring under 7 seconds?

I know we play the percentages giving up mid-range twos but that's how we lost the game. As Collins said, 'they couldn't throw the ball in the ocean,' especially from three-point range, but we refused to double in the post.

Riley is a black hole on offense. He's gifted but he left many guys standing wide open and took tough shots.

Lots of blame to go around in my opinion.
Yup. Really bad decisions by Riley.

just got home from the game... frustrating so so frustrating.

1. While it was still a high percent Illini fans, and we got some good chants in props to NU and their student section. The students are very very energetic and definitely a factor. Also overall more NU fans show up to their games now. No longer are the days of old welsh Ryan where it was all orange.
2. NU had a terrible first half and we should've used it to go up by 10+ but we also played poorly.
3. Its only December losing this isn't the end of the world, but we have a lot of tough games this month can't let it keep happening.
4. Unfortunately as much as it pains me I now want NU to win some games so this stays as a q1 loss.
