I guess his stats look pretty solid, but I thought Feliz killed us tonight too. A couple terribly ill-timed, careless turnovers to go with rough outside shooting. I know he makes boneheaded mistakes sometimes too, but for the life of me I don't get why Griffin isn't getting to 30 min each night. We need people that get can get hot from deep, and with Frazier's struggles, we really only have Ayo that kinda-sorta fits that mold. The spacing just isn't right, and our passing/decision-making is not consistently fast enough to make up for it.

Honest question. Why not sit trent frazier and use him as a 6th man. He's killing us right now and griffin is helping us. Go with ayo, feliz, griffin, DW and Kofi. Use frazier as a spark plug until he finds his game. Why give a guy 30+ minutes when he is shooting 13%!!!! in his last 40 shots.

Trent is still our best ballhandler by far and doesn't cough up careless TOs. It's pretty glaring when there's pressure -- he's always the guy bringing it up. Dude is our PG and only averaging 0.9 TOs for the season! Feliz is a pitbull and has been huge for us of late, but I think he's the better call to lose minutes to Griffin, particularly in a game like last night where he can't hit anything. He's not as big of a threat from deep, needs the ball in his hands to be effective, and isn't the defender TF is either. Griffin is a superior spacer/cutter and is a better complement to Ayo's and TF's drives.

Agree, Felix didn't have one of his better nights. Other that Ayo, nobody did.

Wow feliz should lose minutes and not Frazier? That's a take i don't agree with. I get frazier has to take bad shots at time but it isn't even close whose been a better player this year. And the shooting is about the same.

Killing us? we won 4 in a row before this and losing to a top 20 ranked, top 15 NET team isnt some shameful thing.
Certainly not shameful. But how many double digit leads have we lost in the big ten this year? 4? This one just hurt, given everything that was at stake.

It really didn't hurt. Frustrating sure but hurt? No. If this game was to decide whether we get in the tournament then yeah it would hurt for sure We are a lock for the tournament and have a chance at a double bye and top 4 finish in the conference. .

I'm sick of us blowing leads ugh. We allow the other team to go on runs (need to clean that up). Kudos to Ayo though on another good game. Other players need to step up please!

While Trent’s shooting certainly could’ve been better, this game wasn’t lost on field goal %, it was lost in the rebounding battle.

We haven’t shot well all year, but we kept winning despite that because of rebounds.

Gotta rebound the ball better.

To each their own. Every game we lose hurts me, lol. Especially against Ohio State. And yes I think it does hurt given that if we’d have won we’d be playing for a conference title Sunday.

We shouldn’t be a program that is just worried about getting into the tournament.

At this point, we are a program that is worried about just getting into the tournament. We are not Duke, UK, Kansas. We haven't been to the tournament since 2013 and haven't been past the first weekend sine 2005 so i will take whatever I can get out of this season. There are important things in life to be hurt about. Illinois basketball not winning a conference title after 7 years of not making the tournament is very low or not on the hurt scale.

YES! So much this. The most frustrating part about watching that game last night wasn't the poor shooting. It wasn't the ticky-tak calls. It wasn't the dumb turnovers.

The most frustrating part was watching us play pretty good defense, making OSU take poor shots, and then not getting the defensive rebound while OSU grabs it and puts it in the hoop. Over. And over. And over. It was like a recurring nightmare.

My last post on this. I am tired of everyone piling on Trent. Yes he has been off, but as someone pointed out earlier, a third of his shots, maybe more, are at the end of the shot clock. If Ayo is getting shut down on the drive, he dishes to Trent who has to throw it up. Now yes, he is missing good looks too, but those statistics are not painting an accurate picture. If people insist on blaming someone, it's clearly Giorgi and that position. I go to the games and he has, IMO, cost this team a couple of games this year. Last night, 4 fouls, ZERO rebounds, and 2 points off a great pass from Ayo which resulted in a layup. He has been missing layups all year, his defense is best described as swiss cheese, he gets in the way of Ayo and Felix on offense often, and he has missed critical free throws this year. Unfortunately, you have to give him minutes. His lack of production is wearing on Kofi too. Kofi is having to play more minutes and I thought he looked tired last night-he is a freshman after all and he has played 30 games against some great big men every game. So yes, Trent is not helping from the perimeter right now. But that isn't what is "killing the team" as several have tried to point out.
:shield: Solid post. Trent is struggling for several reasons and I hope he works through it but I am more concerned about Giorgi. He is almost guaranteed to commit a foolish illegal screen call within the first 5 minutes he's in the game. The referees are almost looking for him to make a mistake. His stat line last night was embarrassing and I wish it was an anomaly but it wasn't. I don't know what they can do to get him out of his funk but he is really hurting us. I never thought I would say that I'd rather have Kipper in than Giorgi but that has become the case.

Aside from the free throw discrepancy and the offensive rebound woes, how do we only get the ball to Kofi for him to take 5 shots??? Not a recipe for success!!! That being said, the Illini are still having a great year and I can't wait to see how they do in the Big Ten and NCAA tourneys. Go Illini! :shield:

Exactly. And we aren't quite back there yet. Winning at OSU (and Iowa) would have really helped solidify us being "back" (to where we should be as a program) more than a tourney appearance will. I want MSU levels of success. Not Minnesota. That's why this stings more than simply a regular season loss against a ranked opponent on the road would.

Because part of OSU's game plan was to make it difficult for us to run offense through Kofi. Whatever we tried to do to counteract that didn't work.

Kofi and Giorgi committing dumb fouls led to the rebound difference. One never gets a rebound from the bench. Wesson was in early foul trouble and the game was under control and then Kofi and Giorgi got five fouls between them in the next ten minutes.

I agree, but I think we lost on the inability of rebounding, ridiculous foul ratios, and lack of secondary offense. Ayo is awesome and when we get the ball to Kofi, it is awesome. However, I hope we use some secondary plays. For example, when Ayo is trapped, we back the ball out and let the defense reset. We should bring up someone such as Feliz to the midpoint so he can create an open look. This way Feliz is not much the shooter can either kick it to Frazier or a cutting DaMonte. Another option would be to create scoring opportunities by setting screens to Ayo at the freethrow area and let him create when is closer to the basket.

I also think if they start trapping up front when Ayo is handling the ball, maybe we should just have Kofi post up. With Giorgi he can split the screens for a layup or mobile enough to pass off a quick dribble if attempting to set a screen. I also think that Trent may be struggling some is because he is a rhythm shooter and needs a few shots to get going. While Ayo is awesome and the reason we are doing so well, I do think if initiate Trent more early, he will be more likely to knock shots down at the end. Let him create off pick and roll and tell him he gets a few shots early in the game instead of one or two.

I also wish we would play Alan more. I understand he is not as good of a defender as DaMonte, Ayo, Trent, Feliz, but he is not hurting us as bad as that run at the end of Maryland game or the last play vs Michigan State.

Last, I don't think we lost because of Zebras, but they definitely provided an advantage big time to OSU. I mean the disrepency was huge and it was not because we weren't attacking. There were many times Wesson should have fouled out Augustine style. For CJ Walker to out free throw our team alone is ridiculous considering we have attackers in Ayo, Feliz, and Kofi.

I am fine with Trent's minutes and how is playing in all phases except shot selection. Given his size and stature if he has to take more than one or two dribbles to get his shot off then he should likely pass it or turn down that shot. TF can hit shots at a much higher percentage by passing first unless it is a easy to get open look. Many of the shots he takes he has to work to get and those are the ones i wish he didnt take. Other than that i am fine with everything Trent gives us. I want AG on the floor more so the scoring isnt on just TF and Ayo so much.

We finished with a 12-21 record and were 7-13 in the Big 10 last year. We have one of the best year to year turnarounds in a power 5 conference this season over last. Let's complain a little more about playing for a double bye on Sunday. Unbelievable.

#174
Not a good overall performance. Rebounding we can fix. Shooting is a game by game challenge for us. Fouls and turnovers have plagued us also. Beat Iowa and go into tournament play on a high note. Trent and GB have got to get it together because Ayo and the others cannot do it by themselves.

The only thing that worries me is killer instinct, we can jab them in the eye with a knife but cant stab their brain until they are dead!
