He's playing three freshman significant minutes, he head one of his non freshman (Goode) insured fot 4/5 of the year, the PG he started the year with bailed, he replaced an All American, all five starters, four seniors, and their 6th man on one off season. They're one win from 20. The UCLA and Texas games raised expectations to an unrealistic level.
Not to be argumentative, but this team was talked about as a possible FF team preseason. Brad did plenty to stoke that fire. And it’s still possible if they’d just pull it together and start playing smart basketball.

Sorry in advance, but not posting any comments in the game thread have left me with things to get off my chest.
Shorter version: you can't win many games without at least a decent PG.
Not knocking our guards but they are just not PGs.
It means we can't stop dribble penetration on D and can't get anything going to the basket on O
I think we all thought Skyy would be that PG, but o well..

OSU only shot 14 three point attempts and made 3. We shot 29 and made 6 (maybe a lesson here?). Excluding the 3 point shots, OSU shot 64% from the field. How can that be? Illinois has most always been known as a good defensive team over my decades of watching and attending games. This team is not at the same level defensively as most other Illinois teams. So much for having players that can "switch" on defense.

Agree, that has been a huge hole this year. Not getting an experienced, transfer point is probably the biggest miss by the staff by far.

It is. It's happened plenty of times before where a team seems to come out of nowhere and catches fire at just the right time. I'd love to see an Illini team have one of those magical runs. But I certainly won't count on it.

For such a promising start to the season has ended up for me as disappointment and bleh.

Hitching my bandwagon on the women’s team. At least they know how to compete consistently.

The proverbial straw. I’m officially checking out til next season. I was actually dumb enough to think after UCLA and Texas that this team was 89, 05 capable . Couldn’t have been more wrong. Play with a low b-ball IQ. No mental toughness. No urgency. Unable to force their will on a 3-14 opponent. Despite everyone in the free world knowing what you need to do offensively and defensively the players and the coach seem clueless. We don’t punch anyone in the mouth but are the recipient of such punches. Will not be shocked at all if we don’t win another game this year. That includes big ten tourney and NCAA tournament. Blame goes pretty much all around but Brad has to take the brunt of it as this has gone on for most of the second half of season.
Good riddance.

The Crush was in attendance today. I know this because a friend's son is in Crush. So, at the 6:40 mark of the first half (yes, I went back and looked it up) we are down 26-14 and Coleman makes a nice move to the bucket for a dunk. What's he do? He gives a shout out and a point up to the Crush. Obviously, he knew they were there and somewhere in his head he was hoping to give them a shoutout. This to me shows the mentality of not only him but the team. We are 29 games into the season. You are not and have not been living up to your preseason billing, expectations or talent level but there is plenty of time to get your head straight, acknowledge it's time to knuckle down and play hard. But no, he feels the need to showboat for the Crush. I'm sure no one has forgotten the BS T in the IU game. So why even flirt with that. You made a nice play, hurrah! Get back on D. You're still down 12 to a team that's lost 9 in a row in a game with huge implications.
And he missed his FT

There is no way I will ever have this mentality as long as we have a chance I'm never going to give up on a season. Until we are officially eliminated, I will never give up on a season.
As frustrating as this team is, that's the thing about college basketball. Anyone, even this often infuriating Illinois squad, can get hot and win 3 or 4 games in a row. It may not be likely, but it's still possible.

Tough loss. Probably cost a seed line but still think we can beat anyone or lose to anyone so not much has changed.

Think the team goes as Mayer and, to a lesser extent, Shannon goes. Not the hottest of takes I guess but I’m talking more about effort and engagement than shooting.

Overall thrilled we pulled Mayer out of the portal but he takes games off. Had 11 shots today and 10 of them were 3s and only 3 rebounds, 0 offensive. That tells me he was settling and not playing hard or engaged. When he plays downhill, flies in for offensive rebounds and selectively shoots 3s we are tough to beat but didn’t have that today. And for whatever reason that lackadaisical effort rubs off on the rest of the team.

Good news is I have a hard time believing Mayer won’t be up for the NCAAT. Let’s just get through this next week and see what the matchups in the tourney are. No elite teams this year.

Brad has been a mediocre coach at best THIS SEASON. I want to stress not his entire Illini career but this season.

I wouldn't say that. Brad is the same coach he was last year, the year before and his first year here. What's different this year is the youth and inexperience of the team. We're relying on three true freshmen and one (essentially) redshirt freshman to provide a ton of minutes. I'm not trying to give this team a pass by any means, but we only have one player from last year's team getting significant minutes. What is it they say? The best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores. We've had to live with the inexperience all season, combined with two key transfers and two sophomores that haven't been able to contribute as expected this year.

Here's hoping these freshmen and sophomores stick around awhile and gel much like the seniors at Northwestern did, or as the Frazier/Williams/Kofi team did last year.

Lol of all the things today, this is your complaint? He didn’t have to run back on D because it was an And-1 and media timeout. Maybe you should go back and look it up again. Coleman brought it today even if some others didn’t.

One thing I'm hoping for come NCAA Tournament time is that Illinois' finesse-style play will be more effective when not facing Big Ten officiating crews. There were multiple times today when Shannon drove to the basket and was hammered with no foul called. It's even gotten to the point where he no longer throws up his arms and briefly complains... he just picks himself up and goes back on defense.

Of course, for this to work, we'll need to dial back our intensity on defense a bit as well. But from what I've seen so far in these recent games, that shouldn't be a problem.

Has there ever been a team in the final four that shoots under 30% from three??? Doubtful.
