Ohio State 75, Illinois 67 POSTGAME

I hate to rail on Finke, reality is, he is at best a stretch 3, when LB and KN leave the floor and with Ebo looking more and more like a freshman the past couple of games, Finke keeps being forced to play out of position.

The need for MULTIPLE big bodies next year cannot be overstated.

With that said, still not defending his soft finish that comes up short, that should have cut it to 1, instead forces us to foul and allow them to stretch the lead.

Couldn't execute the offense and get good shots at key points down the stretch. Had to keep settling for long jumpers, and since we have no legitimate big men, there are no second chance points like Ohio State gets. Finke is completely unable to play "big" in any sense of the word (read that "B1G" if you want). Completely out-muscled for rebounds and weak overall. Missed FTs also hurt - just don't have the talent to overcome mistakes.

That being said, every game is a learning experience. This season is obviously lost, but you're hanging right with several of the best teams in the country - this time on the road. I'm interested to see how Illinois does for the rest of the season, where they realistically have a chance to go 5-2 (and probably *should* go 5-2).

There's all of what you just said AND you forgot to add the fact that you didn't turn the game on until the point where we led 30-17. ;)

Hard to win without bigs. Black fouls out partially because he is the only guy that can mix it up inside. Jordan was a bit of a bright spot. Alstork had some decent spurts.

Did anyone else feel like they were continually getting bailed out and sent to the line on very VERY soft fouls???? Felt like we would have pulled away if they weren’t continually bailed out in that stretch where we maintained a 4 point lead. Not to mention that awful 3 point shot foul on AJ, he got all ball!!

I don't know whether to be heartened or horrified by the fact that barring multiple transfers and/or quality roster additions, this year's team is essentially next year's team.

Only a 5 foul difference called, interestingly Ohio State only shot like 20% fro 3 point distance...would have thought the 2/3 zone should have been applied more?

Kipper and Leron both committed really silly fouls to foul out of the game, and I would really like to see some more awareness and leadership from the veteran players in these close games. Trent can only do so much. Inspired performance from Alstork, but you gotta sink those crucial free throws down the stretch.

Well if this helps, our leading on ball defender and leading scorer today will be gone? :chief:

I hope our team is like those Seton Hall guys who were interviewed prior to the game...they talked about how they got beat up their freshman year, and it really made them focus and work harder. I know we need bigs, but I can't help but think the repeated losses will make our team really hungry next season.

tOSU had three fg in the first 10 minutes of the second half

If you are glass half full you will feel good because hopefully Ayo is an upgrade over Tejon and hopefully we add a big (5th year?) who can hold his own down under

How can you go 11 minutes without a score and miss half your free throws down the stretch at this level. God we need basketball players. Guys who can create and put the ball through the hoop. Unbelievable once again.

Let's be honest. We have 2 guys on our roster who are B1G-quality starters RIGHT NOW -- Trent and Leron. Arguably Kipper. That's it.

Mark Smith might get there. But he's not even close yet. And we have nobody -- Trent and Leron included -- that can even sniff the likes of KBD and Miles Bridges and the stars of the league.

We desperately need horses. the talent deficiency is as stark as I've seen in a long, long time.

If we could have scored more than 0 points in the second half of the first half, we win that game. :(

Shoot all 3pts, turn the ball over and don't make fts is how you go long periods without scoring. We make some stupid fouls too. Alstork 40 ft from the basket. Blacks foul because Frazier doesn't let him get set for the pick. Were just 2 of many. Plus we get calls because we have a reputation and also we are in the road. Road officiating sucks in the big ten.

Even with this same roster, I don't think next year's team will be this year's team.

Game ended at the wrong time. Simple as that. Back and forth, and unfortunately it was forth when the clock ran out. Like a swimmer getting out-touched. We played heads up with tOSU. We just need to be on that upswing at the buzzer. Disappointed but what a team, really, for having no bigs.

Bardo commented that AJ got all ball, but was ok with the foul call because KBD had earned that call due to being the front runner for B1G POY.

If KN figures it out, we are there. Lack of bigs or not.

TJL's 2 brick FT's were the turning point.

IMHO, leaving the zone D and going back to man D was the nail in the coffin...how many times did we get beat on the dribble and help D left Wesson oilman open for the putback....the 3-2 zone took OSU out of their offense and the man D got foul outs on both LB and KN.....

Finke has to make that layup at the end and I will say TJL missed FTs were big, but the change in D scrapping the zone was bigger...

Makes bonehead plays all the time, and when’s the last time he was our leading scorer? :illinois:

Trading Alstork for Ayo, and having everybody else come back a year older and experienced is a pretty good tradeoff.

No doubt we'll be better. Good enough to be a legit tourney team? that's the question.

That nonsense comment by him got under my skin a bit. Refs should be called out when they make a bad call like that. Being "ok with that" is just stupid commentary on his part.
