I haven't read through the entire thread, so apologies if this was mentioned. But for me the game was lost after Ohio St got called for the flagrant foul. Kofi missed both FTs, we didn't score after that when we got the ball and OSU came down and hit a three pointer.....ballgame

I think the most disappointing part about this team for me is we really don’t have an identity this year. We don’t play exceptionally good defense by any means, at least not consistently. Our offense is good but too reliant on hot shooting and usually goes as far as Ayo and Kofi will take it. We aren’t exactly a hustle/effort team unless we want to be or are in a 15 point hole. It feels like we have a great roster where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole, and that’s a frustrating pill to swallow. I don’t know how much of that is coaching vs good/bad luck. We won almost every close game last season and have lost almost every one this year. Eventually, we will win a 2 or 3 point game in the B1G. But elite teams don’t dig themselves in 15+ point ruts, and we’ve done that 3x in 8 games already, not to mention imploding at Rutgers and giving up a 19-0 run to Purdue. This team has been an absolute head-scratcher, and while I don’t like to blindly blame “coaching” as an issue, it’s pretty inexcusable to have this type of roster and be 9-5 (5-3) with arguably the softest start to B1G play of any team in the conference. I hope this team progresses, but so far we looked better back in December (Duke, Minnesota) than we do now.
That's the Jekel & Hyde I've been talking about...some form of consistency for 40 minutes is what this team desperately needs....although having said that we've been pretty consistent in giving opponents a double digit lead in the first half, before a second half surge and then losing by 1 or 2 possessions🤢

No comment, really - that's how apathetic I am about Illinois basketball right now and sports in general.

I do wonder that during these elongated droughts and large runs that are going against us.....where's Ayo? He's supposed to be our bucket getter and run stopper. He's just not getting to the rim as often as he was. He got a few shots stuffed vs Maryland on the baseline. When you have "stars", those are supposed to be the guys that right the ship. He ended up with what, 22? Not sure that he was a difference maker at all the last two nights.

Credit to Holtmann for clearly emphasizing that neither Illini big can pass. Doubling hard and early and wait for a TO. Well scouted and coached.

Joint and severable liability as far as blame for the loss. Its embarrassingly bad how quickly we fall behind in the first half, and thats on us. At the same time the refs completely and unequivocally screwed us over. Why does o$u basketball need the Big Ten refs to protect them? WHY NOT US WHY IS IT NEVER US?

not making excuses but do feel like both Maryland and OSU played above their potential against us. Maryland hit a lot of contested 2’s and EJ shot out of his mind. Not just on 3’s but hit several step back 2’s. This would be beyond my skill set, but would be interested to run expected win percentage on those 2 games relative based on the shots they took. Guessing each team wound up with 8-10 points above expectation.

That said, we have to respond when we get punched in the mouth. Just can get behind as much and as often as we have.

We are less than the sum of our parts right now and BIG championship is probably out of reach. But we still have a corner we can turn to make a run in March. Definitely disappointing as I had much higher hopes for this squad.

Kofi has hands of steel and he's horrible at catching the ball. I hope he comes back and works on that and his defense.

That definitely didn't help and it was absolutely a turning point. That said, going down 18 in the first half sets up a situation where perfection is required to get back into it. Pointing to one play really diminishes the fact that this team continues to put themselves in huge holes, they continue to miss free throws and they continue to find ways to pour gas on the fire. Games like the Purdue game, where we go 9-22 from the line and let up a 17-0 run....that's forgotten because we won. Starting off down 19-4 vs Penn State, again, gets forgotten. Down 15 to NW....the celebration was that we overcame it.

They need to find a way to be more consistent and that starts with #11.

The players are not improving. That’s on the coaching staff.
This is a team that is supposed to be led by not one, but two NBA caliber players. Those are the guys that you have to look at first. In these last two games, have they carried their weight or better yet, are they living up to their hype? Liddell was the best player on the floor today. That simply cannot happen.

It's easy to blame the coach, it's no fun to look at the player, but these issues aren't developmental issues. It's between the ears. BU cannot go out there and make foul shots, he leans on his All American guard to calm things down when it gets bumpy and that's not happening and white frankly he's been forced to go to the Freshmen for key minutes. That's not going well for anyone during this Covid Season. They just aren't ready and it shows.

If BU has one area that he needs to clean up, it's the rhetoric he uses about this team. "The best guard in the country", "the most dominant big man in the country", "elite shooters", etc. None of those things are true. The media bought in, the fans bought in and here we are, aggravated.

Maybe we shouldn't be?

In a very unusual stat Ahrens is 29-53 from 3 pt and today he got his very FIRST 2 pointer on the year.
