There’s certainly a wide talent deficit between us and Oregon. I’m not sure we can out coach the talent deficit on defense, and I am by no means sold on AH as a coordinator.
The difference in talent level is pretty obvious. If Biel Coached Oregon with same players, would they still be number one? Chicken or Egg problem...which is the key better coaching or better players. Second you on AH.....gotta make a move here.

This is from the University of Oregon:
You cannot use or possess any form of cannabis anywhere on University of Oregon property, including Autzen Stadium
. This means no vaporizers, no edibles, and no smoking. This policy also supports the smoke- and tobacco-free campus policy.

Can anyone be THAT happy with 8-4 at this point? I mean, I comprehend it is a huge improvement for this program as far as the record goes … but we are 6-2 with an easier end to our schedule than beginning. Winning 2 home games (or going 1-1 at home and winning at RU like UCLA did) and beating NU in front of an Illini-friendly crowd at Wrigley should be an expectation now.
Lotta chicken-counting going on here Fighter.

I’m not taking anything away from what we have accomplished thus far, and agree the program has taken big strides in many aspects.

But there’s a reason the computers rank us in the 40s / 50s. Those last 4 games are essentially coin flips and the opponents are not just going to roll over.

I’d be very happy with 10-2 or 9-3 but lower results are certainly on the table, especially with all the injuries yesterday.

I U beat nebraska 56 to 7, they are a very good team. If their quarterback is healthy it would not surprise me if they beat Ohio State, who beat the same Nebraska team yesterday 21 to 17 by scoring a late touchdown.
Should be a quick view of the REAL IU Vs OU.....IU has pretty weak schedule....

It’s on AH to be aware of these personnel limitations and do something about it. Sending a 3-man rush against Dillon fricken Gabriel on a 3rd & 7 is inexcusable. Getting sliced on 3rd & long when the whole stadium can see a screen pass coming from a mile away is a problem. This defense plays awfully tight.

I didn’t like the 5 man front today but it gets your best players on the field.

There should be no shame in losing to two top teams in the big team and all of college football in PSU and Oregon. Just take your lumps and move on. We are on the upswing.

Everyone gives @ChiefGritty way too much crap.

While he loves speaking in absolutes (he may be a Sith, lab results are due back any day), he’s simply agreeing with many posters that we are massively out-talented by A LOT of college football.

The fact that Luke and good coaching has carried us through a lot of these games doesn’t mean we should assume 3-1 or 4-0 and be disappointed with 8-4.

The fact that Illini fans are on here talking about even being a little disappointed in 8-4 blows my mind. Maybe they are unrealistic or simply haven’t experienced Illini fandom for the majority of the last 25 years and have less context. No idea.

But at the beginning of this year, I’d have sold a kidney for 8-4 considering the the unknowns and youth of this team.

Just could not match up with their speed on either side of the ball it seemed. The third down play on Oregon's first drive pretty much described my viewing experience. We had a tackler in place, then like the Road Runner "beep beep" he was gone for a first down. Illini had them in several third down situations and they converted almost every one, including a 17-yard gain on third-and-18 that set them up to go for it on fourth down.

All of that said, what a joy it has been to watch this Illini team. The home wins over Kansas (I'll take our guy over Daniels any day, even after yesterday), Purdue (even with the second half disappearing act) and especially Michigan were such good environments and so much fun. For me anyway, being able to look forward to Illini football games again after years of wandering in the wasteland of college football, I am very appreciative of what Coach Bielema and his staff and players have accomplished so far.

Well said. I stated at the beginning I wanted 6-6 and a bowl. A beginning of a consistent bowl level program. We are there now, and nothing wrong with being hungry for more. We all want IL to win every game don't we? Going into a tailspin at the end of the season would be disappointing, but we all need to realize that we are a pretty decent team but we are not deep in talent. Injuries to a couple of key players can really affect how we play. That won't always be the case as BB keeps adding recruits and portal kids but it takes a while to get there.
We aren't Ohio State. Or Oregon. Or Georgia or Alabama. Know who else isn't? Iowa and Wisconsin, who have a now 30+ year run of being consistent bowl level top half of the B1G programs. My point is let's be happy with however the season ends, weather it's 7-5 or 10-2. We've reached a goal of getting to a winning season. I'm going to enjoy every minute of it. Then I'll set my sights on another and then another.

What I don't understand is when the Oregon QB was forced to move on the pocket, he works mid a lot of throws. Yet it appeared many times that we only rushed 3. Why not try to pressure the QB more and maybe he would make some mistakes.

Sounds like the whole secondary is out.
That ain't good.

Well, made it home from the game. A tough one to watch. I couldn't post during the game as the cell network was overloaded. But, there wasn't much to post about anyway.

As others have said, we put this one in the "lost to a better team column" and move on. My only concern is the injuries, Hopefully not as bad as they looked.

This was my first trip to Autzen Stadium. It is a nice place for a game. Of course, the weather helped with that assessment. Plenty to do and see before the game. Good food. Friendly fans. And they do a good job of entertaining the crowd during those long TV timeouts. I hope to return someday with the #1 ranked Fighting Illini and return the favor.

I personally believe we'll have at most only a slight talent advantage over the remaining teams on our schedule. We've been winning by winning the turnover battles and limiting opposing teams big plays. Remaining games will require great coaching and top level effort with a sprinkling of good football "luck". Win 2 of the last 4 games and I'll probably be pretty happy.

Minnesota game is huge....just kicked Maryland's butt. Their QB has similar stats to Altmeyer with a higher completion %...over 70%.

hopefully Josh & his associates took good notes . people mainly turn out for winning teams , but things that occur before the game, during timeouts & after the game do matter to a significant amount of people .

We should absolutely be happy with 8-4. It's true we are out-talented by many opponents. It's also true the analytics don't look favorably on us. With that said, here are some additional facts: We are 6-2 on October 27th. We've been ranked firmly in the top 25 for about a month now. We will likely be favored in our final 4 games, so 10-2 isn't a pipe dream. Are we more than the sum of our parts? Probably. So be it! That's the beauty of sports. But he'd have you believe we have never been a top 25 team and it's simply amazing this year wasn't anything other than a disaster. That's quite an outlook! Now, I bet if you asked Bret, Luke & Pat Bryant, they wouldn't feel this way; it isn't some miracle in their eyes. Belief is the commodity of kings, folks. There's a reason people poke fun at Eeyore, Squidward & Grumpy the bear - having cynical characters in a happy universe is always a great source of comedy.

Sure. There is no cannabis on campus. Ok. And underage students don't drink either.
I think you missed the context of my post. I stated "policy", I was responding to a post that said something like Autzen stadium had marijuana distributors selling in Autzen. I said nothing about whether MJ or alcohol made it on campus.

One of my favorite things that happened in the student section at Autzen back in the 80s was when students created a paper mache Duck the right size to fit a keg inside. They got it into the student section and it had this long tongue with a valve on the end and people were stopping buy filling their cups with beer. The keg got confiscated late in the first quarter.

In the early 70s I remember seeing a marijuana plant that someone had planted in the landscaping in front of the university president's office, it got about 18 inches tall before someone removed it.

Glad you enjoyed Eugene. Any time you're returning let me know and I'll try and fill you in on restaurants, wineries, side trips etc. that you might enjoy.

While this loss was a little demoralizing we all need to remember they are the #1 ranked team in the country for a reason. Both of our losses have come on the road to the #1 and #3 ranked teams respectively. That means a lot more than what this team has been given credit for. Bret will get them back on track and we should win no less than 3 games to finish the year.
User name checks out. :)

No, probably not. But I’d feel better if I had some quantifiable proof to know for sure.
They have had some MAJOR upgrades and Cignetti appears to be scary-good. I think it’s most plausible to think Indiana knocks off one of the two.
I think they beat P.S.U. Call it an eye test.

CG doomposting aside.....it really boils down to the talent gap on both lines.

We absolutely have a top 3 or 4 B1G QB and WR corps. In most of our games Luke has literally been running for his life...pretty successfully in a lot of cases, but the most sacked (or top 2 or 3) QB in the B1G. We really are lucky he's still standing.

So to me, (as I've posted before) we are just 2 or 3 Dudes on our OL and DL from being a legit CFP team this year.

By that I mean imagine Luke's success with REAL protection. Imagine another Dude (DL or LB honestly) to complement Jacas in the pass rush...or a run stopper.

We aren't as far as it may seem to a top tier B1G program IMHO. I hope this years success (in big games) so far, with more to come, will translate into some serious recruiting wins.
