OTL Report on Michigan State

#27
What happened to the people who were assaulted/abused was not right. There are not words to convey what they must have went through, the emotional scars or how it may have forever changed them.

That said, hope our house is clean as everything any school has covered up over the years will come to light in the next few weeks. March madness is just around the corner & the media will have the spotlight shining bright searching for headlines.

We should be safe. We'll be nowhere near March Madness.

So does this fall under the claim that Illinois basketball kills off anyone that beat us? Northwestern and Maryland guys got hurt. Minnesota scandal broke. Now MSU. It's not a good idea to beat Illinois basketball. Bad things will happen to you.

I can not see Izzo announcing his retirement in the next few days....not with all this going on....it would look like he feels like he needs to get out before he's forced out....but really how would MSU allow him to stay on for the remainder of the season if there's any indication that he was involved or knew of a cover up???

However, I could see Izzo finishing the season and then announcing his retirement

LOL, waiting for the other shoe to drop on Iowa!

I find it unlikely that Izzo gets the boot, but that's just me.

A year ago I would have agreed with you. The Nassar situation is to athletics what Weinstein was to Hollywood. Not even Izzo is too big for this

Based on the report, Dantonio seems like he’s in trouble and while players that are part of the basketball program got into trouble, Izzo isn’t directly named in any of it. Seems like the basketball stuff went to Hollis and no action was really taken (which is despicable regardless). Unless more comes out directly linking Izzo to the negligence I can’t imagine him resigning or going anywhere.

That article isn't stating everything that OTL knows. I'm sure they are saving the best stuff for the TV broadcast. The sky will likely start falling in East Lansing come Monday morning. I would bet that tonight is Izzo's last game coached in East Lansing.

Because of the assistant coach punch allowed to stay?

The culture. Appling and Payne though not prosecuted, were never disciplined and I don't think todays climate will let you hide behind the "well the Prosecutor declined" excuse anymore.

Not to mention Izzo stuck his foot in his mouth with support of the now terminated President.

Not to mention that if there was in fact a culture which protected MSU athletes, there will be more accusations to come out.

The Prosecutor's office seems to have some issues when presented with a high profile MSU athlete

disgusting news.....if Izzo and D'Antonio hid facts to protect their players then they should be fired and face criminal charges....

the fact that athletes think they are gods and can do anything they want shows how society values their on court performance's to allow them to get away with whatever their heart desire's...the victims are then treated as criminals for standing up to corruption on college campus's ...

I doubt either coach will be fired as the $$$ speaks louder today than does basic human rights to be protected from predator's...sad state of affairs that runs amok in society today ,

I think the announcer said Izzo was going to discuss the matter directly after tonights game.

He also said that Izzo said the rumors that he will retire at the end of the year are completely false.

The undergraduate student-assistant coach incidents might be what takes down Izzo. No way D'Antonio lasts, there's just too much there.

In a just world, the entire athletic program is shut down. The issues are systemic and absolutely awful.

I know this won't be popular in today's culture but I don't think Izzo did anything wrong. The assistant was charged of hitting a girl with conflicting witness reports was subsequently fired after being accused of sexual assault and two players were not disciplined (as far as we know) after being accused of sexual assault. You can't start suspending or kicking players off the team every time an accusation is made.

The biggest problem I have is that every one of the cases made against athletes in the article resulted in no charges being filed. Why aren't the investigators or the prosecution being forced to resign? They are the ones who are supposed to be trained in these matters. If the coaches or university pressured them into covering it up but then they should be held accountable. If not, I don't think Izzo should be sacrificed as a scapegoat for public relations window dressing.

Was going to post this after the MSU-ILLINI game but didn't because I didn't want to sound vindictive. But after this report I can't hold back. MSU for decades now in basketball can recruit any player regardless of grades. They can go further down the academic rung than every other big ten team. Character issues and other flaws seem to coincide with these players.

Illinois can't get these players through the doors. Izzo I believe is a clean recruiter for the most part. But he had benefited from MSU lax standards and hasn't run players when he should have. Nunn type incident at MSU would not have resulted in expulsion. Time to impose the lack of institutional control on MSU.

Paterno coached his last game against Illinois too.

I get what you are saying and any good head of a program or organization will retain plausible deniability. The Athletic Director and Lawyers are the buffer between the money makers (Izzo & Dantonio) and the wrong doing. One has to ask whether it is plausible that Izzo and Dantonio had zero say or influence into these matters. As powerful as these guys are, I have a hard time believing that. Kendrick Nunn was suspended after an arrest, yet at least two very public incidents went without action by Izzo. One resulting in the Assistant coaches arrest.

I find the prosecutors actions very questionable from what I have heard, but in their defense they have a burden of proof to get beyond. Izzo, Dantonio and MSU officials do not. They could have laid down the law at any time with suspensions or getting booted out of program with the message "not on my watch." They chose not to, and now they are linked to Nassar because of their inaction
