I wanna see how Iowa's o does against that Penn State d. My take is that Penn State's dbs are REALLY good. If the Iowa's offense scores 30, then I might agree that it was us, not them. But yeh, a bad day for Altmyer. He gets away with throwing into tight coverage a lot, but not today
Not sure I would ever use an Iowa offense as the baseline for how good a defense is...just saying.

Defense played excellent. It’s a shame the offensive was again a clown show.
As a team, we still don't know how to win. Some solid individual performances but not solid in all phases. That will come with better recruiting, continuing development and better decision making and increased confidence that comes from experience. I'm keeping the faith. As a diehard Illini football fan, it's all I can do. Never been one of those "oh well, on the basketball". Never will be.

I hate put the blame on Altmeyer because he's been good but those interceptions were pretty awful. Although it's frustrating to see them go away from the run so early but hard to blame Lunney when the QB keeps giving the ball away.
Those interceptions are absolutely on him, but he is still not getting the protection he should be getting.

That extra pressure contributed to some poor decisions.

Yeh, I know they're terrible. But if they move the ball against that d, then maybe our o really is bad. But I don't think so.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but I was furious that they left Johnny Newton in the game, especially in the last 7 or 8 minutes. You don't risk injuring your team's best player in the closing minutes of a game like this.
Secondly, I thought the defense showed a lot of improvement today.
I am not worried about Altmyer; I think he just had an off day. It doesn't help that he is running for his life on every passing play and that the recievers continue to be unable to get any separation from the DBs.
My biggest concern right now is the OL. I am hoping they show improvement as we start playing weaker competition.
I hope Matt Bailey's injury isn't too bad. We really need him.

Today sucked. The season hasn't started the way anyone wanted, but I'm not ready to give up on them quite yet.

I'm going to give them a couple more games to see if they gel before I get in basketball mode.

I was also surprised Newton and Randolph were still in the game in the 4th quarter. Substitutions were obvious except for them.

Defense looked prepared and tough. Hopefully, they continue to play like this for the rest of the year. One thing I noticed is they seemed better last year bringing pressure up the middle late in the pass rush when the pocket is collapsing.

The offense is a disaster for the 3rd year in a row. Lunney had plays called that got guys open, but Altmeyer wasn’t finding them. Seems like the preparation chronically isn’t there on that side of the ball. Calling the play is one aspect, but its clear the protection schemes aren’t there, the read progression isn’t the right order, the situational play calling isn’t there.

Bottom line not getting results, doesn't seem any better than Peterson's 🤷‍♂️

Tough day, the D did all they could. And I never got a code for free McNuggets after I texted the number.

Defense played well. Offense moved the ball when they weren't stopping themselves. I was not impressed with PSU and I'll say it now. If the turnovers were even we win the game. They weren't and we didn't so on to FAU and beyond.

Please be careful what you say about Looney, I texted about my concerns about his wide open offense last year. And was beat down by so called Illinois insiders. Now I'm reading there are others about their concern. Yes, the O Line is pass protection problem but this guy came from a UTSA team with less talent and still put 40 on Illini. Defense played as well as could be expected considering time amount on field.

Was at the game, raucus crowd for much of the first half, then it got quieter, and quieter, and quieter until we were close to outnumbered by PSU fans. If I never hear "We Are...." again it will be too soon.

Seems like there were some iffy non-calls on holiding and PI (both ways), and I was really, really annoyed to see PSU go for it on 4th down with the game completely in hand.

We walked through the parking lot with some PSU fans and they were very complimentary--to the effect of "clean up the turnovers and this would have been a game". I have a hard time taking praise from people that supported PedU, however.

Every week we are "cleaning up" something. Bielema was brought in to make this stuff go away. I'm not happy, and I'm not sure running the score up on FAU would be enough to make me happy again.

Agreed, but I feel like we put Altmeyer in positions to make bad decisions. They put the backup in and the play calling went with quick, simple routes, the receivers were open and said backup missed (wildly) the throws. Those were throws Luke easily completes. Why not put Altmeyer in positions to succeed. We completed a long pass and... went back to the same throw to the same DB who grabbed the ball. Just no. Go hurry up, run the ball, keep them backfooted, simple and quick throws. That pass protection just isn't there for those long plays to develop and bad things happen under pressure. On the bright side, special teams looked okay and the defense made Penn St look mediocre. All those turnovers... just ask Nebraska fans how that turns out. Woof.
