Agree. I’m actually fairly positive after this one.

We played a tournament quality team in an absolute must win to save their season on their floor where they are now 12-2 and a 5th year all American had a transcendent game. Similar to IU except we were at home obviously. Not sure anyone was winning in there tonight. It happens. Especially in CBB this year.

Our defense definitely could have been better, I probably give us a C, but for the most part we fought until the end. Ty was sensational. Coleman remained assertive offensively. Dain I thought did a really good job guarding in space. After giving up 10 23’s in the first half we tightened up and only allowed 2 in the second half. And both Luke and RJ hit a 3. For RJ that was maybe the best looking shot he’s had in a month. Didn’t think and just let it fly.

If we compete like we did tonight we will have a chance to win every game, including in the tournament. Guys aren’t going to hit contested step back 2 pointers for a full 40 minutes maybe ever again this year.

Once the game was out of hand we resorted to chucking too many 3’s but overall still think we are trending in the right direction. Let’s go beat Indiana.
this.

I recall from my college days in the '80s some painful reg season games. Blowing a 20+ halftime lead to Iowa at home and losing. MSU's Scott Skiles going off on us for > 30pts, and the Illini losing. Lots of other disappointments. We had prodigious talent on those teams, too. It happens. They're 18-22 year-olds playing a brutal schedule.

I don't understand the rending of garments going on here. We couldn't recapture the 2H D we played last Saturday. We ran into a legit All-American, veteran talent having a career night when he couldn't miss. We shot 48% (IIRC) on the road and lost. When does that ever happen?

Saturday afternoon we were the windshield hitting a solid Rutgers team. This evening we were the bug. Move on and focus on IU.

Put me in with those who liked a lot of things about the way this team played tonight. FTs, turnovers, shooting, rebounding (which was a plus but no surprise and maybe not big enough), and scoring balance were all plus factors....all negated by Pickett and a hot bunch of shooters. The big question now is how does BU (and the Illini team) keep the same kind of thing from happening in Bloomington, Indiana on Sat. Can they find a way to keep TJD from a Pickett like performance? Highly unlikely at the moment. But this is B1G basketball and nothing is predictable.
No we won’t stop TJD because Brad is ok with giving up 2’s. Who cares if we lose and give up 33, 35, 41. Brad is ok with that and doesn’t need to find a way to stop it. I said I have a problem with it. Do everything you can to keep the ball out of his hands. In his face all game. I just love it when we intentionally pin ourselves on the high ball screen. Is that how they teach it now. At least we are good at something.

One of those games tonight you really just tip the cap. We didn’t rotate very well, but that Penn State team has punked a lot of people..not even sure if that’s what you call it. They’re a good team, there’s a reason they have won some of the games they have. That being said, we rotated late on a few rotations and Jayden didn’t have his best night. Felt TSJ was a little over aggressive at times that ultimately hurt us. Penn State plays a lot like the warriors and Alabama. Three or layup, and then you have a guy like Pickett who is a complete load. Just like the Iowa game, he went off just like Perkins. Tip the cap, they hit contested shots, we played a half step slow…it’s okay. Luckily; we won’t see Penn State in the tournament. There’s something at least to be said about losing to the same team twice. We just can’t beat ‘em this year, that’s fine.

With all that being said, I’m a little worried about facing a team like Charleston in the first round. We need to communicate and guard the perimeter when teams play a 5 out with an emphasis on spacing and threee point shooting. Seems to be our defensive Achilles this year is when teams spread us out.

Think we give Indiana a game, head tells me we lose a close one. A 1-1 week would be ok with me given the schedule.

Our issue isn't with teams spreading us out, its with teams that implement heavy off-ball screening. Penn State is elite at it and Northwestern is too. We simply don't communicate well enough on those and then guys get put in bad spots on switches.

Furthermore, we are really lacking that perimeter defender that takes it personally when a guy is going off. I really thought that guy would be TSJ but the sample size has been large enough and I'm not seeing it. Terrance repeatedly let Epps get switched onto Pickett and Matt didn't really provide resistance. Coleman did a decent job and Pickett hit some tough shots over him but I still feel like Coleman should be swatting his balls into the first row.

Anyone saying that this game against PSU was "just like" the game in December didn't watch at least 1 of those games. The game at SFC we were flat, uninspired, and going through the motions. An all around putrid effort.

Tonight we put up 81 points, showed a lot of hustle and absolutely no quit, but got torched by a guy having a career night. Yes, it sucks to lose, but we didn't beat ourselves tonight like we did in December.
I would agree with that. We really did put together some impressive spans against what was a pretty phenomenal one man performance.
On to the next... And it's a doozy.

Last time we played Indiana, and TJD dominated, if we had made a few more layups and/or FTs, we'd have won the game, HOWEVER, when one guy dominates, it energizes that team, and demoralized the opponent.

For some reason, if 4 different post players all have 8 points, it is better than one post having 32 points. When a player is dominating you, it is tough to mentally handle. Just my opinion.

Shortest post game presser of the year ... a little over 6 minutes.
It's official, Brad doesn't have an answer on how to stop Pickett. Asking for a rule change??? C'mon. Sorry, that's a bit lame. That's the best answer? 40+ pts, 8 rebounds. Good night. That game couldn't end soon enough for Brad.

At some point it just gets old to hear excuses like:
"Jahmir Young is a stud...."
"Kobe Brown went offffff......"
"Funk had the game of his life....."
"TJD couldn't miss....."
"Perkins was lights out....."
"Pickett was just doin' what he does...."

It's a scheme or lack of adjustment problem at some point, isn't it?

Loved our offense. 80+ points should be enough for a W.

So, let's look at Penn State's last four games (four losses.) They lost to MD, WISC, NEB and PUR. In those four games Jalen Pickett was very good and very consistent, averaging 14.75 points/GM, a 50% FG% on 13.5 attempts per game) with a 36% 3-point AVG on 3.5 attempts/GM. He also averaged nearly 7 assists/GM (6.75) Clearly a very talented offensive general for Penn State. So, any team will do their best to stop him, and we tried. We mainly guarded him with our better defenders (C-H, Harris, Rodgers, Shannon) but to no avail. Against Illinois he had 41 points on 75% shooting and 8 assists. What did those last four teams do on defense that Illinois didn't. Explanation? ANYONE?

haven't read any posts tonight. I'm the eternal optimist when it comes to Illini BBall. Again, we ran into a buzzsaw tonight. They have our number. It happens. Would I have liked better switching out front? yes. Would it have mattered? i'm not so sure. They shot lights out. BUT, we didn't give in. Kept fighting. Coleman did downlow what we've been asking him to do all year. TS was taking it to the hoop hard. Matt, well, he's a streaky shooter that's all there is to it. Ty, wow. Is there such a thing as a mid to late season jump? Jayden had an off night. Not sure having Dane out there for anymore mins would have mattered. Luke, still gotta get his legs, but man, what a stroke. RJ didn't play but when he came in he didn't sulk. He played hard.
IU will be huge win or lose. Come out and continue to fight and a loss won't hurt. Come out and lay down, feeling sorry for ourselves. Then we're in trouble. Team still hasn't clicked on all cylinders. Still time to do so. I ain't going anywhere. Still on the bus.

When a team has “that guy”, a guy you have no answer for, it would be nice to be able to play zone.

Not the outcome I was hoping for though not unexpected. I knew Pickett could be a hand full but didn't think he would go off on us like that. Maybe in retrospect we could have doubled him every time and make him give up the ball and hope the others didn't make us pay. Easy to say afterwards. On a positive note I think in the second half Harris played the best defense on him and Rodgers is starting to look like a future B10 conference player. Get fired up for Indiana. We got this, we don't lose two in a row.

When Coach says the team is not mature enough to play consistently hard on the defensive end, I presume that he’s talking about the Upperclassmen. Which is concerning.

I know it seems like Pickett has a knack for scoring against us, but he just hit a bunch of tough shots and you can't really do anything about it. He was 8-8 on non - rim 2's with pretty much all of them contested. He was 5-9 from 3 which included a stepback 3 over a 6'10 dude.

Wow, that was really frustrating to watch! Pickett is a solid player but if he had the opportunity to play against us for his entire career, he'd be an NBA All Star. And to be honest, their whole team fed off of it. At one point they shot 16 of 22 on two's. Tough to beat a team that can't miss (57.9% for the game).
On the positive side, Ty is going to be so much fun to watch over the next few years. Coleman is gaining more confidence in creating his own shot. Jaden will not go 0-7 from 3 and will learn to work his way over picks. RJ finally hit one ... seems like a month since that happened. And Luke will continue to get his legs under him.
We go into Bloomington, play well and bring home a little Road Kill and all will be forgotten. This league continues to be crazy! The Huskers went into the RAC shot 58% and got a W! Wisconsin beat Scum shooting 33%! Let's tip our hat and on to the next. Go Illini!:shield:

Who holds the defensive scout for this team? do they try?

Also, we gotta have more knock down shooting. We miss way too many easy buckets to overcome the dumb 3s we take.
That's what our crowd was asking ourselves. Penn St with the same look, beating us the same way, and we show zero adjustments on D in the first or second halves. I really enjoyed being down 8-12 and the one thing we DO decide to change is stop going inside and start throwing up prayer three's. Epps and Rodgers were bright spots in an otherwise bleak performance. Hopefully our other team shows up in Bloomington, but I don't feel very optimistic. The real downer for me isn't youthful mistakes, the lack of depth at point guard, or even hustle... The thing that gets me down is our complete and total lack of preparation. We're so predictable it's painful and you can watch well coached teams take advantage if we're not 100% on our game. Oof.

At some point effort needs to stop being the scape goat. On one hand, Illinois like many other good teams this year have lost games they were expected to win. The losses here and there don’t bother me as a fan.

The concerning part is always blaming it on defensive effort. If coach’s approach to the game cannot afford players to have down games or “flu like symptoms” without risking a blow out loss then there’s a problem with the approach.

To be fair, we don't have anyone who can guard TJD this year. Dain doesn't have the lateral quickness on defense (yet), and historically CoHawk has really struggled in that matchup. We can double him, but that's going to lead to open threes. And Indiana can make those this year. Basically if we do it, we're going to need Indiana to have a bad shooting night. Personally, I think Indiana is our worst B10 matchup, but any team that has a talented guy inside and a bunch of deadeye 3pt shooters is going to give us trouble.

I'm disappointed in the scheme against Pickett and the 2nd half adjustment or lack thereof for him. He earned a lot of points but a constant denial or double would have better than this by far. If seems pretty straightforward...

How does this even happeen?

I have neverr seen the lane so wide opeen, it lookeed like a airport tarmac

Maybe try an alternating zone to throw off their rhythm, keep them out of the paint- maybe Picket gets 31 insteadd of 41

It might be said "we can't keep tradiing 2 point baskets for 3 point baskets the entire game."

But when you miss 20 three-point shots, the odds aree probably better sticking with thee two.

I am not one to critique coaching but when one is hemmoraging one needs to try something''
