Potential Rule Changes for 2021-22

Opinion piece by Norlander on the likelihood of each of the changes. Plus which ones might be tested in NIT.

The potential change to foul structure has been proposed and discussed prior.

Here's some stuff that is newer to me:

• Rules committee recommends removing the initial warning given for a flop call. Straight to a technical, awarding the other team one free throw each time, and no personal foul assessed.

• Also experimenting with fewer stoppages of play by designating any timeout as replacing the next media timeout.

• Finally, giving schools the option of adding shot clocks that include tenths of a second.

I’m not sure I like either of the first two. So the ref can call either a flop or a blocking foul and one results in a personal foul and the other doesn’t? Seems to put the refs in a tough call position.
On the media time outs, I doubt they are giving up advertising minutes so the time outs will have to be longer if there are fewer of them, right? To me an extended timeout disrupts the play even more.
Sometimes I think they create problems trying to solve something that was never really an issue in the first place.

Get rid of the Possession Arrow for held balls/tie-ups.

Allowing for alternate possessions on a held-ball situation penalizes the defending team who played good defense to force the issue. The offense team had a chance to execute a play and failed to do so when the defender caused the tie-up. The defense should be rewarded with possession of the ball in every instance.

Also, disallow any time outs being granted when an offense player is in trouble on the floor. Again, the offense team had their chance to execute a play and failed to do so when they got into trouble. The defense should be rewarded with possession of the ball if the offense can't get out of the mess and if the offense team tries to call a time-out they get hit with a ‘T’.
