Them having tape on us but us not having tape on them is a pretty significant downside. I think it's a mixed bag.
LOL. Sometimes I think you're my favorite poster on this forum. When I made my previous post I was having lunch on the patio with my wife. She asked what I was posting and I read it to her. Then I guaranteed her that there was this other poster who would make a contrarian response about Indinia having game tape on us and the whole thing being a wash. I just walked into her office and showed her your post and she laughed out loud. Never change, Gritty. Never change.

We gave them little in last week's game beyond a vanilla playbook on both sides of the ball. The advantages of Illinois having played a game totally swamp any advantage that IU could possibly gain from watching the tape.

Every response you will have to that statement is just a post-hoc rationalization based on the way the Zook era fell apart, information that was unknown and unknowable at that time.

I agree with your larger point, but Zook is not the best example. I feel like from literally Day One everybody understood both exactly how that might work out and exactly how it might fail, and both were proven to be right.

This game will define the rest of our season. I believe this will be a statement game for the Illini. I want us to be underdogs every time, to light a fire inside of our guys to prove everyone wrong this season. We finally have the coaches and players in place that we have all craved for years.

Illini 35
Hosers 21
Not trying to be too contrarian, but given that Lovie’s recruiting was poor overall and BB’s hasn’t been great, where did all these players we “crave” come from? I mean I believe this staff is pretty could at developing players (or at least it seems like they will be), but outside of a handful of players I’m not sure the roster is full of guys I “crave.”

All that said, the arrow does appear to be pointing up and I think the Illini will win, though I’m expecting a much closer game than you and some others on here. I’ll be in front of my tellie tonight cheering for the Illini and rooting that you and the others were right and I was wrong.

At this rate, we’ll be favored by kick off
I know its week 1, and lines are more "movable" than later in the season, but it is a little amazing how that spread line has been bought down all week . It could very well be a pick em by game time.

This is a conflicting day for me as the Illini and the Cardinals play tonight at the same time.....I have the illini game set to record and the Cardinals game I have to use Sportsurge website to view them.......I guess i will watch the Cardinals game live then flip over to watch the Illini replay.......

You need to get your chant going to the Rain Gods in St Louis if you are that torn! Need that rain to move up a bit and just cancel the Cardinals game so you have no dilemma. Am Illini and Cards fan but all about the Orange and Blue tonight.

Ex ante projections must by definition be justified based on a track record, or they're just SWAGs.
And you are being absolutely coldly objective by seeing through the thin resume of someone who rather surprisingly landed a Big Ten job in the mid 90's after a four-year stint as an NFL coordinator with middling success, preceded by just one season as a head coach at a mid-major.

Unless we're talking about Nick Saban of course.

I agree with your larger point, but Zook is not the best example. I feel like from literally Day One everybody understood both exactly how that might work out and exactly how it might fail, and both were proven to be right.
Totally, but the same could be said of Bielema in many ways. Both guys were made into a bit of a laughing stock by the sharp end of the SEC, though both obviously have positive program-building qualities.

I think Bielema is terrific, the plan makes total sense and is right for Illinois, but man it is just a monumental task.

Jerry Kill turned things around at Minny, and 'whats his name' has been able to use his schtick and drop it into 3rd & 4th gear, and still has to prove he can keep it at that level.

not many people were in love with Kill. Not the sexy , buttoned down , polished loafers type of guy that Guenther always wanted, but he just was the ole ball coach that found ways to win more games than he lost.

BB is that guy for us. He indeed has a monumental task. Not one that a lot of guys want(ed). One wonders who some of the names were that came across Joshs desk in 2020, and if BB was choice 1 or 2 or 3.

Not to mention an injury or two from week 0, while they'll be at full strength. But I agree with the OP on the larger point, that it's probably still advantageous overall. Beat the Loosiers!!

I enjoy the new Gritty....so don't take this wrong but...when I see a post of yours, when I read it...it comes out to me sounding like...Stinky from knee high park on the Chappelle Show! I can't shake it...plus you are occasionally positive lately! Enjoy your point of view...;)

I feel the same way. The Week 0 game is a huge competitive advantage for all of the reasons you cite. I don’t see a single downside, besides the likelihood of late summer warm weather in Memorial Stadium. Having a game experience before a “Week 1” opponent is invaluable, as is the extra bye week during the season.
The McCray injury perhaps? Though your main argument is valid

I think Kill is the floor of what BB could be for us. He is a steady plod forward that will give us an identity and competency. I think he gets the program to the point that 6 wins is expected and we'll have a surprise 9-10 win year in there once or twice when the right guys develop and it all comes together during BB's tenure. Then BB steps down after 10-12 years passing the baton to his chosen successor in a similar way Alvarez did with him.

Kilroys is their version of Kams . The stadium is a solid 7-8 block walk (or more) , north of campustown

My daughter went there from 2008-2012. she never went to one football game
My son was in the Purdue band. When they travelled.to IU, they were put in seats that had so many layers of bird crap on them it was obvious they hadn't had a behind in them in many years.

IU makes Northwestern's games look well attended. Or ours.

And in that 10-12 year timeframe, we will own Iowa (starting this year), Wisconsin (next year after a scare this year), Minny and Nebby. And the turnstiles will respond to that!

Illini grind down the Hoosiers something like 28-17, but it feels more like an 18-17 victory.

Absolutely love that energy and I think the way we play and the way Iowa and Wisconsin play those will be amazing games worthy of the prime time fox tv slot in 2 years.

Nebby can't get out of their own way and I think they're headed towards being bottom dwellers.

Minny is 2 years away from falling apart from fleck leaving either due to scandal or an SEC team stealing him.
