In a lot of ways it's difficult to tell how good or bad our true 3pt shooting is as we take such low quality shots compared to the average team. I half morbidly wonder what the expected 3pt percentage would be if the average shooter were to put up similar shots to the ones we are taking. It might not be all that off from our 28.9% in conference and 31.3% overall. In fact it may be even worse when you consider our very high ratio of "bad threes" to "missed open threes".

The hilarious thing is we may actually be a decent 3pt shooting team but our shot quality is so low it nukes our percentages. I'd love to see us have a game where we work the ball inside out and get ourselves high quality open looks just to see where our 3pt shooting percentage would be, but that really doesn't seem within our nature this year. We're like a power-hitter who strikes out over 300 times a season- sure, we could reduce those Ks and increase batting average by batting for contact, but man, swinging for the fences is fun, plus chicks dig the long ball.
I dunno, our guys miss a TON of open looks also.

Game 1 IU 80 UI 65 @ SFC

Lets look at the game stats

Indiana didn't shoot 3 particularly well. They didn't need to - the layup line was working well.
Indiana rebounded well
passed well (assists)

Illinois shot the 3 well Boy, we should have shot more of them :)
Illinois was poor at free throws
Turnovers were low
Steals were up.

This season has been great test of Brad's coaching skills

1. Did good job of reloading after graduating 4 starters
2. Good non conf wins vs UCLA and Texas
3. Good adjustments when our switching defense got exposed and five out offense misfired
4. This team is bipolar on defense and shoots way too many forced 3's

The talent is there so I am hopeful of catching lighting in a bottle and make a run in the NCAA tournament. We came close to winning at Iowa so I am hopeful that we can pull an upset at Bloomington.

The Dave Kingman approach. 442 HR, 1816 Ks.

Difference going into this game
1. Mayer is not sick
2. Not coming off after long stretch of games
3. Goode played well there last year

We have to make our layups

We have to drive the ball and attack the rim. If we settle for long shots, we are going to have a long day.

I like Goode, but I don't see him turning the tide in any game in the near future.

This is not a good matchup for us. We needed the PSU game and let one guy go Michael Jordan on us.

BTW- that has happened way too often where one guy gets hot and we have no answers and can't come up with a game plan to slow him down. I thought the strength of this team was that all 5 guys can guard multiple positions.

Pickett is a 5th year senior, and way too strong for our young guards. He bullies them down low and takes advantage of the wandering pick that is allowed these days on the outside. He is just too quick for our bigger guys. If we had a Damonte Williams to put on him (tough, physical upperclassman), he would not be such an issue.

How did the other teams in the B1G hold him down? I think its fair to say the game plan we had for him didn't work and couldn't find an adjustment.

I don't know that answer, but if you watch Mike Latulip's breakdown, he gives great insight into the issues we had in particular.
