Paddock had the best QB performance against Indiana, there's no doubt. That said, we do not need to prop up Indiana's defense by showing a small sliver of details in the hopes of proving they were good. This is lacking a lot of context.

Some of these QBs (McCord, McCarthy, Allar) had their teams winning comfortably so they stopped throwing the ball. Louisville was thrashing Indiana by running the ball (184 rushing yards) and built a big first half lead. Indiana State sucks and we shouldn't compare our team to theirs.

That leaves Irons, Wimsatt, and Locke. Irons and Wimsatt didn't throw it well but they epically destroyed Indiana by running. Irons had 140+ rushing yards and two rushing TDs, giving him over 330 total yards. I watched this game, he was gashing Indiana at will. Irons hurt his knee later in the season but his rushing against Indiana was 60% of his season rushing production. Wimsatt did the same, 140+ rushing yards in a comfortable win. Rutgers stopped throwing the ball because they had a comfortable lead. Locke stinks so far, but his best QB rating game? Against Indiana. When factoring in rushing (removing sacks), six QBs have put up 300+ total offense against Indiana. That's not a good defense. Again, this isn't taking anything away from Paddock. Paddock doesn't scramble, so the rushing value wasn't really an option. So he destroyed them through the air. But we don't need to act like the Indiana defense is good. It's a bad defense. They've proven it all year against a variety of opponents.
Well I guess it was a good thing Altmeyer wasn't able to play or he would have hung 700 yards on them. 😉

We have 4 years of stats to prove Paddock isn't the next Tom Brady lol

Brady saw garbage time first 2 seasons. Stat line is 6 games...129 yards passing, 75% complete with 0 TD and 1 INT

Paddock saw garbage time first 4 seasons. Stat line is 5 games...180 yards passing, 70.6% complete with 0 TD and 1 INT

Brady first season starting 61.9%, 2427 yards passing, 14 TD and 10 INT

Paddock first season starting 59.6%, 2719 yards passing, 18 TD and 14 INT

Last season playing Brady 61%, 2217 yards passing, 16 TD and 6 INT (12 games)

Last season playing Paddock 62.9%, 729 yards passing, 6 TD and 1 INT (1 start and few spot drives)

(This is just for entertainment and not taking it seriously)

Obviously different competition, and you could probably throw in some other things, but these are the stats of Brady and Paddock over their careers. Interceptions being the biggest difference.

At some point Bret has to remember that he is CEO of an entertainment business masquerading as amateur sport, and optics rule the world in today's day and age. The optics here are heavily in the opposite direction from everything we're hearing out of media and fans, and what I've seen with my own eyes over the last two weeks.
Exactly. Starting Luke will make Bret look like a genius IF it goes well. If not, he’ll be blamed for putting a dusty old rule or alleged promises to Luke ahead of team success. He’ll hear endless “if only” regrets from disappointed fans. Starting Paddock has no downside from a customer perspective. Season ticket sales are at risk too.

Different circumstances, different teams. Different coaches, different schemes.
Plus sometimes the switch just turns on and players make the mental leap later in their careers.

I mean, yeah, I though the end of the Minnesota game was probably a lucky fluke, but then he did it for a whole game. I mean, maybe it's still just a fluke (a much more unlikely one), but still, how would we ever know unless he plays another game?

No wait, I forgot. I reported last year that Tommie D is next Aaron Rodgers. Paddock is the next one after that.

Everybody is overthinking this. This is simply a QB with zero to lose going out on his terms and slinging it. And he is insane hot. This isn't about his past or his future....this is about right now and beating Iowa.

He is our best player not named Jer Zahn or Isaiah right now. That is not even remotely debatable.

Paddock was launching passes up in the air where our WRs just had to sit and wait for them to come down. Can't imagine Iowa D will allow that.
there indeed were a number of passes that were a little under thrown and our guys still were able to catch them
but thats the case anytime your QB throws for +500. every pass isnt going to be perfect

To those hoops posters who said this week "I'm glad Kolek is playing, we want to beat their best", or words to that effect - I want to win. I am not happy Cooper is hurt but I am happy he is out. Trust me the victory Saturday, should it happen, will not taste any less sweet.

Heck, just the reduced strain on my heart during every Iowa KO or punt return will be worth it.

At least we won't have to worry about did he call fair catch or not.

My comment might have been a bit too blunt. My issue isn’t so much with Luke, but the “Starters don’t lose their jobs here because of injury” explanation. The starter should be the player who gives you the best chance to win, period. If you happened to realize that the backup was better because the starter got hurt, so be it.

Totally fair.

we know exactly what defense they're going to run, they're just super good at executing it.

david bell solved that defense. can williams or bryant?

Once they put the 2nd and 3rd string in sure.
I get you are an insider, but come on dude ... you're giving off the vibe like it's a no-brainer to start Altmyer and those of us wanting the guy who just broke a school record to continue to be the starter are just like missing information, haha. At the very least, thinking Paddock should start is ENTIRELY reasonable, even if you think it is not the move to make here.

I cannot fathom not starting a guy who just threw for over 500 yards and 4 TD's. Altmyer has had good games, but Paddock just had a game which I didn't even think was possible for anyone in an Illini uniform. This of course, coming off an emergency game winning drive against Minnesota where he went 3/3 over the length of the field for the TD in just 40 seconds. I had to login here just to see if the news was true when I heard from my friends. I cannot for the life of me understand the decision.
