To those hoops posters who said this week "I'm glad Kolek is playing, we want to beat their best", or words to that effect - I want to win. I am not happy Cooper is hurt but I am happy he is out. Trust me the victory Saturday, should it happen, will not taste any less sweet.

Heck, just the reduced strain on my heart during every Iowa KO or punt return will be worth it.
Slightly different situations. I wanted to see how the hoops team stacked up against a final four caliber team in an early season game on our home floor. On the other hand, this game is huge at this point in the season and I am super glad that DeJean is out. Hopefully it helps us get that 6th win.

Does this also mean Love is the #1 starter at RB the rest of the season since he was out with injury a bunch of games? Know running back position tends to use more depth so little different but BB tries to word things carefully.

I don't agree with BB on all decisions made but I do trust him with this program. Go Illini!
The rule isn't iron clad. Feagin started over a recovered Love.

it begs the question:
if Paddock had thrown for 735 yards and set the D1 record, would that have been enough to lock in the start ?

I’m sure there are compelling reasons to start Altmyer that have nothing to do with game planning for Iowa and perhaps a few reasons that in fact do have to do with game planning for Iowa. For instance, Altmyer is certainly more mobile and can gain yards with his legs.

But it’s kind of comical to me have quickly we’re now pivoting to the rationalization that it totally makes sense to start Altmyer because the performances we just saw from Paddock were actually not remarkable or special at all because anyone could convert on 4th and long and drive the length of the field on three completions if the defense is playing a soft cover two, and heck who can’t set historic passing records in a game including a walk-off TD when facing an opposing defense that has a slightly below FBS average (ranked #81 in sacks) pass rush. I’m sure it totally won’t be another 43 years until another Illini QB throws for 500+ yards in a game.

Justify starting Altmyer for whatever reason, that’s fine. But let’s please not pretend that it’s not a huge risk to yank the cord on the QB that got you to this spot by delivering two consecutive, mind-boggling historical all-time performances. If the decision backfires, there’s going to a fan and media backlash like we’ve never seen. People are not going to just brush it off and say “Eh, that Paddock thing was a fluke anyway. I mean, who did he even play? The important thing even though we lost out and missed a bowl game is that we held firm to the principle that starters don’t lose their jobs to injury.”
Preach!!!

Even if Luke wins, he can't win. It's not that he lost his spot, it's that Paddock won it.

I get Indy was soft, but come on!

Also if Luke looses it's worse for everyone headed into the last stretch of games. Whatever controversy you were trying to put out becomes an inferno.

Not fair to either player, imo.

Everybody is overthinking this. This is simply a QB with zero to lose going out on his terms and slinging it. And he is insane hot. This isn't about his past or his future....this is about right now and beating Iowa.

He is our best player not named Jer Zahn or Isaiah right now. That is not even remotely debatable.
Yet, we've been debating it for days.

In that scenario, we'd be forced to start Cal Swanson.

Bad decision IMO.

LA 100% going to start. BB used the exact line I said he might use, "Players don't lose jobs to injury." - very calculated.

If I was someone on the team I would think that this decision was related to a transfer deal promise and be kind of pissed at LA (whether it's true or not) if he has a bad game and we get our !!! kicked. And there's no way you can pull LA mid-game if we start to get beat on under these circumstances or you look like a clown. LA should have told BB to let Paddock start IMO. BB coming out and saying that he told him that the start was his if he wanted it, because he went down to injury, but then he declined and told BB that he didn't think it was in the team's best interest for him to come in cold off of a concussion vs a strong team like Iowa when Paddock has been doing great. Only way this is anything but a terrible idea is if he goes out there and has a good game/wins.

I agree. I bet even Altmyer unsderstands that. I'm also not sure it is even fair to Atmeyer himself to start?

If the starting QB had to be "pulled" in this next game, who would you rather see being "pulled"? Considering present and future, I would want that "forced pull" to be Paddock. Besides, who in the wide, wide world of sports would not want to see Paddock again?

The point's probably already been made but I agree with this one. Altmeyer is being set up to fail. Fair or not, folks are going to hold up what he does against one of the best defenses in the country against what Paddock did last week, and if it's not good enough, you'll never hear the end of how the wrong guy was in there. If you start Paddock he's playing with house money and you can pull him at any time knowing that people will understand why you did it, because they will have seen him fail with their own two eyes.

Maybe Evan's the best choice here in a vacuum, but there's a good chance this casts a shadow over him that may follow him around for a long time.

That’s the inevitable comparison. Unless LA can dominate Iowa, a common interpretation will be he was a big step backward from JP. Yes, it’s a tougher team but that will still be what fans see and conclude. It could collapse fan morale. If I sense a blowout I’ll be inclined to stop watching in disgust over what might have been.
