Some insomnia last night led me to lots of deep thoughts about this moment for BB. Whatever the decision, it could actually be a defining moment of his coaching career here. Going through all of the scenarios...they all lead to an outcome that we will all talk about until we are old(er) and grey(er).

Insomnia Logic

1.Start Luke, does ok to great, win. = Genius, he knew all along, fans/media are dumb
2.Start Luke, does ok doesn't get pulled, lose. = Questionable, fans/media are all over him and "fire Lunney Jr."
3.Start Luke, struggles, get's pulled, win. = Smart decision, tough look for LA, fans/media "told you so"
4.Start Luke, struggles, get's pulled, lose. =Questionable, really tough look for LA, fans/media "fire Lunney Jr."

5.Start JP, does ok to great, win. = Genius, fans/media "well duh, it's John MF Paddock"
6.Start JP, does ok, doesn't get pulled, lose. = Questionable, fans/media "fire Lunney Jr."
7.Start JP, struggles, gets pulled, win. = Smart decision, best look for LA after #1, fans/media "Luke is our future! we're going bowling!"
8.Start JP, struggles, gets pulled, lose. = Smart decision, not questionable, 3rd best outcome for LA, "we might lose to NW. Fire Lunney Jr."
#9. No matter the outcome, fire Aaron Henry

Pretty sure Iowa will hold it's self to 6 points. We will just be a long for the ride when it happens.
I dunno. After last week's Caligula-esque explosion of offense (22 pts!!) in the wake of Baby Ferentz's defenestration, I'm guessing that he's liberated in a similar manner to JMF Paddock and we'll see Hawks Gone Wild on the beaches of the Iowa River. They might very well reach 24 this week.

This looks correct, mostly since 50% of the results end in "fire Lunney Jr."

By the way, I've noticed that Bret's mentioned Donovan Leary a few times recently. I'm thinking/hoping we go into 2024 with a good 1st/2nd option at the QB spot.

Color me surprised if Paddock does not start from the couple of things I have heard. We will see though. Can't wait to be there, should be a fun one
Bielema said they’ve known since Sunday. I think the interview on Sirius said that “as of yesterday (Tuesday) Luke was totally cleared to play.”

So that would make me think that it’s Paddock if they knew Sunday who was gonna start but LA hadn’t been cleared yet.

Buuuut he also didn’t say “Luke was cleared yesterday.” So, maybe Luke was clear as of Tuesday. And also clear as of Monday, and Sunday. ;) total smoke screen. Who knows!

This is going to be ugly.

Illinois 11
Iowa 6
I propose 11-5 as an even uglier score. I don't see us getting 11, though. Maybe 9-5?
So long as we win, baby.

Im going to go out on a limb and predict we score at least 20 points this weekend

Iowa like to look like the late 1970's Steelers, but they arent quite in that league of defense

We need to play our game and not worry about Iowa. Let them stop our newfound offensive strength. Never play to lose.

Iowa is not the ‘85 Bears. They’ve mostly played anemic BTW offenses and the one good team they played scored more on them than they did against us with the 5 TOs we dropped in their lap. And whoever they draw in Indy is going to beat them like an absolute drum to the tune of 35-49 to 3 because they don’t have the speed, size, and overall talent to match up physically with those squads.

No reason to think we can’t exploit some good matchups where we have speed or size advantages against their D. I think Paddock’s ability to read quickly and get the ball out could really make a big difference and open up the run. Defense needs to be disciplined and bring effort from start to finish.

I'm suspecting this as well (no inside info, just guessing), but OTOH I don't think either QB would have much luck passing on IA's D even with their top CB out and that's assuming our O line can protect which is a whole 'nother can o worms.

Plus I think Lunney is going to call a bunch of first and second down runs which will be stuffed leading to long 3rd downs which IA will feast on. Hope I am wrong

edit: if Kaden is out which that injury report seems to confirm, running a lot would seem to be less likely obviously. Whoever plays QB for us (could be both, I guess) is going to have to play really well or we will have to earn the bowl game against NW, obvious again

The game needed to win at IA is the game we don't have. Mistake free, field position football that grinds it out and wins a low scoring game. Or superior athletes at multiple positions. I'm not predicting a win.

Time to flip the script on Iowa. I was born in December 1991, and on my birthday we were 32-20 all-time vs. Iowa. After the 2000 season, we had actually expanded our series lead to 37-24 all-time. We inconveniently did not play them in 2001 or 2002, but since we made the Sugar Bowl...

- We are 2-13 vs. Iowa.
- We are 0-7 in Iowa City, with our last victory there coming in 1999.
- We have experienced losing streaks of 5 and 8 games vs. Iowa in that timeframe.
- We have lost to Iowa by more than two touchdowns in 8 of those 13 losses, including an utterly humiliating 63-0 loss in 2018 - good for the worst in school history.

Living in Iowa City from 1998 to 2019 ... it has been REALLY tough. I am so sick of losing to that program that I can't even really articulate it. I want this one BAD. And I think we get it.

Illinois 20
Iowa 13

We’ll beat Iowa by 8-10.

Will follow it up with a stinker against northwestern. Lose the bowl.

I feel it in my bones. Try and run from it but this Illini fandom.
That would suck, but it would be kind of on par for us, haha. It reminds me of 2019 where we got hot and won four straight after upsetting Wisconsin. At 6-4 and with a bit of a hot streak, 8-4 and a trip to Indy was actually still on the table. We of course lost a good game at #17 Iowa (the late hit on Peters), and proceeded to get our a$$es kicked against a 2-9 Northwestern team at home the next game to finish 6-6.
