Their point guard, Cowan, seen enough of him to know that he has his limitations. Need to clamp down on him.
Then, fully expect Kofi to give their soph center, JSmith problems enough to neutralize him.
Then, need to chase their three point shooters off the line all night.
This game is gettable.

Cowan has looked really good this year in the games I've seen. JSmith has been a lot more active this season too. Those two certainly worry me. I'm also worried about their rebounding from the wings. But agree this game is winnable. Need everyone to step up and want this from the get go.

agreed....I want to watch that game before I make my mind up on what our chances are against them...I keep thinking to the MSG game against them when we were supposed to have no chance of victory.....there have been too many upsets this year to at least think maybe, possibly, hopefully, magically we can keep our opponent in front of us on defense and maybe, possibly, etcetc, we can start the game with a heartbeat instead of flatlining as we have numerous times...

And please save 1-2 timeouts for the end of the game...who knows, we might need to call a timeout to set up a play for KOFI DOWN LOW TO WIN A GAME !!
Aye, there's the rub

I feel like MD is somewhat overrated. Top 25 good but not top 5. We also tend to play them well for whatever reason. Cowan has always been hit or miss and I can’t remember him playing well against us. We probably keep it close but I can’t see us winning it on the road.

Forget ab
At least we won’t come out sleep walking against Maryland. It’s hard to be optimistic after tonight’s embarrassment, but we have enough talent to give them a good game if we play well. So far we’ve only seen flashes of that. Should we start a #FreeTevian campaign for the Maryland game at least?
Forget about Tevian. His absence isn’t the problem and his presence won’t be the answer. I don’t know what the problem is, but i know it’s bigger than one player.

Cowan all time high is 30 points, will be interesting to see if he exceeds that this game........

Our Guards are soft, hoping they will prove me wrong at some point the season.

Maryland is Top 5, Virginia with their offense is a joke that high! Maryland, Gonzaga, Ohio State and Louisville could be a Final Four. Gonzaga is my pick this year...20-1 odds right now, and no dominant team out there. I think they could win it all finally!

Yes... Virginia exposed tonight

I saw one team (Miami) that was hungry to prove they belong in the NCAA tourney. Mystifying how we don't look ready to play. Coach has to get these guys motivated and focused. Still a lot of games left, but if they go through another season of sleepwalking through long stretches, the dance will remain a mirage. I feel bad for Ayo --something's off in his game and he doesn't look nearly as confident as he did most of last season.

I honestly think it’s because dre is the primary ball handler with the starting unit and Ayo might not be able to get into rhythm off the ball.

I think he has thoughts of not going last year, trying to hard to be good enough this year and doubts on this and whether he can lead the team as Alpha or not. Just play ball kid, you are good enough, but you aren't with the stuff in your head. Every good athlete performs better when they just let their talents rise up, instead of thinking it to death all the time. Ayo looks to be pressuring himself and quite frankly doesn't look as if he is having much fun?

FWIW, I was at the MD-ND game last night in College Park with a buddy of mine who played for MD years ago. I've watched MD regularly the past several years and am familiar with team. They are athletic and deep. Their center (Jalen Smith, aka "Stix") is a wiry 6-11 with a huge wingspan. Blocked 7 or so shots last night. Also sank three treys. A forward blocked a further three shots, in savage fashion. Their PG, Cowan, is often quiet but runs the offense effectively. Wing Ayala is my favorite player. Gritty defender and deadly offensively when he gets going. Sank several treys last night IIRC and penetrated and scored, too. Morsell and Wiggins are nightmares, too. And Mark Turgeon (coach) has had excellent recruiting classes lately. They have twin frosh 6-10 fwds from DC who are getting a fair amt of tick. Also a frosh from Philly, Donta Scott, who's big (6-7, 225) and agile. He saw a fair amt of time last evening.

Game started slow. ND had inferior athletes but led for first 12 mins as MD couldn't figure out how to attack zone. Then they solved it and went on a big run to lead by ~ 12 at half. Watch some of the highlights on ESPN (esp. Ayala's break in first half when he absolutely posterizes a poor ND guard.) Some highlight reel stuff. They came out in the second and just destroyed ND. Really felt for Mike Brey. For the final 25 minutes of the game they really had no chance to even pull close, let alone win.

MD defended aggressively all night. That's a big reason why they're 10-0. If we do not start playing aggressive defense they will shred us on Saturday. They move the ball well and are unselfish. Got a lot of back door looks last night when they sought them. The one potential weak spot is the center, Stix. Last year as a frosh he got pushed around down low as he's too skinny. He put on 35 lbs over summer but it wasn't enough. Needed ~50 at least. (Why these S&C coaching idiots don't have these guys deadlifting and squatting 5-600 lbs and not simply eating 7000 cals per day baffles me.) Stix got manhandled underneath last night by inferior (though bulkier) ND center and fwds. Had trouble finishing in close when guarded, hence his floating to the perimeter and tossing in the occasional dagger. Last year they had Bruno Fernando, a Kofi-like beast, at center, and Stix played the four often. Kofi and GB need to push him around Saturday. He's a perimeter threat, however, as I noted.

(Side note: I was at MSG for the Illini upset of MD in January. The reason why we won, IMO, is that Adonis DLR got in Fernando's head by pushing him around. Kofi and GB have to do this Saturday w/o getting in foul trouble.)

MD also have not shot well from three, though they did last night in the final 30 mins. ND gave them open looks all night. That doesn't bode well for us as we've been lazy defenders on the perimeter.

My initial observation is that we're nearly as athletic as MD. The only way we will hang with them IMO is to defend them aggressively. Otherwise we're probably toast and if we lose by fewer than 15 it will surprise me. With defense, and proper shooting, we can beat them, in Champaign much more likely than here on Saturday. After the game Turgeon said he doesn't like playing an Illinois team coming off that loss to Miami. I hope BU's boys are motivated.

For the first 10 mins of game I was wondering why MD is a top five team. They looked ordinary. After 20 minutes I was no longer wondering.

My lone hope is we avoid the dreaded 0-5 start in the B1G we're likely staring at if we don't get one of these first 2. Lord knows how dreadful we've been in January over the last 6 season, too. If you didn't know, I'll fill you in with some cold hard facts.

Including our last NCAA tournament season, we've gone 16-48 to open B1G play. In the month of January we have gone 15-41. Our last December conference win was New Year's Eve 2013 against Indiana. Coincidentally, that was also our last 2-0 start in conference.

Moral of the story, we need to win in December and continue that trend into January, if we want to be traveling any where into March.

Dec B1G games: 0-2 Probablility

Maryland (possible if Cowan has issues-wings will be a BIG issue for us)-Michigan (possible if Kofi dominates Teske-guards will overpower our guards for most part however-Livers watch out for again)

Jan B1G games: 5-3

Michigan St ( Strong chance we lose at Breslin-Kofi dominates maybe) Purdue (Recent defense showing does not bode well for our shooters-if same team shows up for them-no way), Wisconsin (our guards dominate-we win) Rutgers (Giorgi has a great night against their length we win) NW (We will win) Purdue ( We can get them at home with adjustments-possible win). Michigan (See above-nothing changes imo), Minnesota (We win!)

Going into Feb: Probability 5-2 best case as I see it? 1-2 in March. Overall in conference 11-9? Sadly, maybe a win or two somewhere else but even then we are at best 13-7?

Overall we would be 20-11? Counting Lindenwood? Where does that put us? Weak non-conf, in conference against best league?

They were 8 for 29 from 3. Not easy to defend as they will throw it up from anywhere. Hope we do not run into another hot-shooting team.

If we can get through this game without a full on finger blasting, I will be impressed with BU having the squad prepared.

Everyone keep an eye on Travis Valmon for Maryland! 6'1 Senior Guard!

I expect for him to erupt against us Saturday! Could be a BIG time game for him. Hope we can find someone to put the clamps on him!

True; however, they missed their first nine threes. They were shooting 50% on twos to that point. Then Ayala hit one near the end of the first half (3-ish mins left.) From that one on MD were 8/20 from three. That's fairly strong and seemed so from the stands.

They were ice cold the first ten minutes. Could not solve ND zone. It was tied at 13 with six min left in first half, then MD went on a tear and led 32-20 at the half.
