Somewhat OT but on the topic of how good Maryland's attendance will be ... but has the TSJ thing sort of died down or is it just me?? Obviously the first game at NU was pretty brutal. The second game had some boos and a "No Means No" chant, but the atmosphere at OSU was so frickin' pathetic that it wasn't bad. I watched the first half of the MSU game at a bar with the sound off, but by the time we got home for the second half, I distinctly remember TSJ shooting a free throw and the crowd simply yelling to distract him (i.e., no specific chants).

I was originally thinking Maryland would be the scariest of the road games, but man ... their attendance is kind of "meh," and as you said interest might be declining. They're barely averaging over 12,000 in a 17,000+ seat arena, but I guess it is on a weekend. It would have been nice to get them on a Tuesday night with bad weather, lol.
I've kinda felt that way too. I think a couple times in the 1st half at MSU there was some No means no chants but they were not real loud and almost drowned out by the others that were just yelling. Hard to say what it will be like this weekend but I will bet a beach house that he will hear it in Iowa

Not sure if it'll affect that side of D.C., but north of there about 20 miles...we're expecting 3" Sat morning. Snow is considered the "white death" around here. All tp, bread, milk, and peanut butter will be panic-purchased Friday evening.

Not sure if this post should go in this thread as well: Maryland’s Mady just left the Iowa game with a knee injury. He couldn’t put any weight on that leg…

The place looks and sounds empty tonight

One thing I will be keeping an eye on. DGL came into the game before Luke last night. On the current roster, he’s most likely to stay in front of quicker guards/avoid screens and he does seem to be bought in and have a little bite defensively. We are so good offensively but right now we are struggling to keep players out of the paint. I wonder if DGL gets a few possessions to see if he can stay in front of Young.
While DGL did get into the game before Luke he arguably had one of his poorest outings in recent games. I can see us going to an 8 man rotation down the stretch with DGL being number 9 or 10 depending on Amani's situation. Don't see Brad going deeper than 8 except for foul trouble or blowouts.

Brad put him in early to send a message to Harmon. That’s about it.

I feel like the Maryland fans will come out for this one. They must know they own us there and can’t be anticipating a beat down like they would expect from other significantly better teams.
It’s a Saturday game, too, not a weekday.

Not of ALL TIME............

Best win over Maryland ever = 1984 NCAA Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena, defeating Len Bias and the #11 Terps 72-70. This was the game just before the heartbreaking loss to (Dickey Beal and) #1 ranked Kentucky on their home court.

Why didn't Lou use his bench more!

Starters played all but 20 minutes. I like the fact that our best players played. I hope all of the people that talk about "how tired" guys are for playing 34-35 minutes can see this box score!
I’m not sure how pace of play compares across the sport generationally, but for sake of argument there were 46 shots taken by the Illini in that 1984 game, and this year we are averaging 63 shots per game so there’s reason to believe the players may be more tired now with comparable minutes.

It might be due to the shot clock. In '84, if memory serves, we didn't have a shot clock. I could be wrong on that, but don't think so.

We need both of these road wins, for every reason I can think of, not the least of which is the NCAA tourney. Also, It'll give us 20 wins and perhaps more separation from the third place team in BIG standings.

Illinois top 5 minute-getters average 145 mins / game with top 2 averaging 33 mpg

Other top teams:

UConn: 143 (top 2 also averaging 33 each)
Purdue: 138 (top 2 averaging 33 & 31)
Marquette: 144 (top 2 averaging 33 each)
Arizona: 142 (top 2 averaging 32 & 30)
Kansas: 158 (top 2 averaging 36 each and they have 4 guys above 32)
North Carolina: 151 (top 2 averaging 35 & 32)
Tennessee: 137 (top 2 averaging 30 each)
Duke: 150 (top 2 averaging 32 & 30)
Iowa State: 141 (top 2 averaging 31 each)
Baylor: 146 (top 2 averaging 33 & 31)

We're somewhere in the middle of that list. I'm not sure the narrative that we're running our guys into the ground is actually true. Keep in mind our minute averages are also slightly inflated due to TJ missing 6 games and Coleman missing 3 games (ie, the other starters played more minutes in those 9 games).

and not Nebraska
agree he chucks too much but he does seem to tone it down when he’s out there with the starters vs garbage time. But yes, I would be comfortable with him in the corner and the understanding that any hero ball earns him an automatic benching.
and then right back in if he has been playing defense,

I look for IL to show up with their "braggin rights" attitude, plus College Park was the dead zone against Iowa, hope for the same kind of turnout

Sure hope that's not the reason. Harmon is an asset IMO.
I commented in the game thread, I thought it was absolutely correct for Brad to send Harmon to the bench for a few minutes after the really poor decision on that transition break where he tried threading the needle that followed some questionable defense. Players sometimes need that. I also thought that Brad pulling the hook on DGL a couple minutes later after his struggles back for Harmon was absolutely the right move as well. Coaches need to let their players know what they can and can't do while on the court. It creates a culture of responsibility, effort, and accountability, and better play tends to follow so long as it's done correctly.

Not just send a message, he was literally standing with Harmon by the bench for quite awhile after he came out. Don't think BU liked his bad turnover trying to pass to Dain in transition that led to an easy basket.
Tough pass but rather see that than a lazy pass, traveling, stepping out of bounds, moving screen, etc. If he connected, easy two points.
