Podz has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. He's freakishly athletic and has a nice long range stroke. My guess is he's leading the scout team against the starters every day (like Cory Bradford did his redshirt year and Frank Williams did his redshirt year). With so many senior guards, there's really not a place for him in the rotation.
Much more concise than my reply. 😁

Fromthelogo had a great stats recap after OSU game. Mentioned 6 passes out by Kofi for one bucket. I feel like when other team is over helping and triple teaming Kofi there should be set "pass in and back out" plays we should be running 90% of those times...the pass out of triple coverage still seems to be last option for us...would like to see fouls called but they wont be

We will need another step forward by Hawkins to win this game, and obviously somebody to be hitting the 3's like Grandison and Plummer have done in recent games. Would be great to see Trent hit some more shots, and to see Curbelo take another step towards being "back."

Missing RJ will hurt. Hoping BBV will be back and provide a few solid minutes, as he is capable of doing. Going to be a tough game, I feel. They have everything still to play for, though. I'm cautiously optimistic that we escape with a W. I'll say 72-68 Illini.

Zone is not going to happen. The zone is easy to beat if you don’t execute it well

BU can switch up the defense on where we put on the pressure and trap like he did when he first showed up. You can’t play that style long but it can switch things up
I was not talking about Illinois playing a zone. I was talking about Illinois facing a zone defense. I know it is not in Coach Underwood's DNA to play a zone in the half court.

Here's a pretty funny fight breakdown video that was posted yesterday.
Fabulous. And the best part is that the video was sponsored by a CBD marketer. If Juwan had simply popped in a couple of CBD Tic Tacs with a couple mins remaining when it was clear Michigan was done, he could have been chill about it and the whole matter would have been avoided.

Can anyone shed light on this ongoing question I have with each game: why doesn't Underwood play Podz? On the rare occasion that he puts him in, it's for about 30 seconds and then he's out again. If making a mistake is the reason, that doesn't seem to apply to other players. It puzzles me and kind of worries me, too, because with Podz's eagerness and energy to play and contribute, we might lose him and I think that would be a loss we shouldn't have.
Hoping for a big win in Ann Arbor today. Go Illini!

I saw some early season stuff where he was really working on his lateral quickness. He was working some lateral agility exercises and also taking on the challenge of guarding Trent in practice to work against a quick player.

So with that perspective I’d say 1 on 1 defense keeps him off the court right now. The good news? He’s working on it.

When BU was an all out pressure deny defense guy, his change up was a 3-2. Played it consistently enough that other teams had to be prepared for it.

I was astonished by that statistic too. Kofi is truly a beast and a handful like no other, and he has really improved some things from last season, but he has several things missing: 1) he can't jump, 2) he's not quick, 3) he can't run the floor, 4) he has no outside shot, 5) and his basketball IQ is not close to the level of Trayveon Williams. He's not NBA ready like Ivey, Davis, Murray.

That said, he is still co-leader of our team with Trent, and I'll cheer like mad for him until he leaves.

I think it is lack of instinct more than IQ. When he gets the ball, you can almost see the gears in his head turning as he decides what to do next. Maybe that is saying the same thing as you said but in a different way, I dunno. But with an experienced player, thought and action are pretty much simultaneous. With Kofi, there seems to be a brief mental pause while he decides what to do next. While he is deciding, three defenders are draping themselves all over him - and it is too late to figure out what to do next. He has definitely improved on this with experience, but I still feel like I see it happening way too often.

My desire would be for BU to draw up a couple of simple plays where they pass ball to him and he has a specific target outlet.

I dont think it needs to be complicated...we can predict where double and triple team will come from and should be able to have a standard outlet for him to burn them with.

The key stat for me in these last three games is how many minutes are Belo and Kofi on the floor together - that is going to be telling in terms of our ability to go deep in the tournament. We're just a different team when Belo is running the offense and giving Kofi easy dunks - he's assisted on more Kofi dunks the last two years than the rest of the team combined. Belo clearly makes Kofi better and Kofi makes Belo better because Kofi holds his man/multiple defenders attention, Belo's drives become easy layups when Kofi is in the game vs. tough shots that are defended when Kofi it not in the game

I realize BU knows his team far better than I do and I also know what I'm saying is a glaringly obvious statement to even the most casual fan, so the only explanation must be that Belo is just not as good as we want him to be right now, he must not be showing it in practice. It's understandable given the concussion, Covid and ankle he's had to deal with. BU's answer when asked after the OSU game "Belo seemed to be playing well why didn't he get more than 18 minutes" was that Plummer was on a heater and he needs Frazier in the game in the game for defense - but that can't be the reason. DMW was awful against OSU and wasn't doing anything out there, even when they went to small ball Belo wasn't getting minutes.

I rewatched OSU and yes, Kofi was getting hacked with no calls, but he really just didn't play well - there is some correlation there, if you aren't getting the calls it get frustrating and getting in foul trouble himself, Kofi does not respond well to- he's just a different player once he gets two fouls, which he has to stay aggressive he seems to be so worried about fouling out he plays really tentative. But the best way to get Kofi out of a slump is not dump it into him again, everyone stand around and wait for him to get double and triple teamed and see if he'll pass it out - it's to drive into the lane and get Kofi some easy dunks or good looks right at the basket to get him going - Belo is the only one that does that consistently, Belo is Kofi's slump buster and we'll need him for the tournament

There are only 4-6 games left before the tourny - we're running out of time to get Belo in the flow and clicking. If he's still not starting we have our answer

Short answer is there are only so many minutes to go around.

Podz is fighting for minutes against a five year starter, another player who has been with BU since he’s been here and who he often calls the glue, a third who is the leading 3-point shooter in the conference, and, finally, the conference’s reigning sixth man of the year award. As to why he gets pulled quickly when he makes a mistake and others don’t, BU has developed a trust with the other players that he doesn’t yet have with Podz. So the others are going to have a much longer leash based upon BU having been in the trenches with them before. In Plummer’s case, though BU hasn’t been coaching him that long, he’s an upperclassman with a unique, highly evolved skill.

All of this has been communicated to Podz, and at least on some level he understands it. Does he like it? I hope not and hope he’s working his butt off to change it. And from what I see and hear that is what he’s doing. Next year, 3 of those obstacles to playing time will be gone, and Podz will be one of the guys who has made deposits into BU’s “trust account.” If Podz decides that isn’t good enough and moves on after this year, a lot of people will be disappointed (including me) because he seems to have a strong skill set and the temperament to be a very good player with Illini in the future.

BU is and should be concentrating on winning games. I’m sure he and the staff are working with Podz and other players on their development throughout the season. In Podz’s case, because of the roster most of his development is happening outside of games. But I’m curious. If you believe lack of playing time will cause him to leave, what is the magic minutes threshold where that won’t happen 2 minutes a game? 5 minutes? 8 or 12 or 15 minutes?

One final thing I’ll say is that I think Curbelo’s injury issues and his inability to practice and play as much as normal this year might be negatively impacting Podz’s playing time to some extent. BU is still trying to get this team to play consistent and at the expected level throughout the entire game. That takes time on the court for the main players during games. It also means that the margin for error for winning games is slimmer, leading BU to play the guards more and leaving scant minutes for Podz right now.
I like Pods and also think he is going to be a big part of the future of this program. It sucks for all the freshman this year with the super seniors still around. In the last game he basically shot himself in the foot. He was barely in the game and came off the guy with ball who immediately hit the open shot. That was a bad look, unfortunate for him, got the hook from Brad.

Here's a pretty funny fight breakdown video that was posted yesterday.
that was a hilarious breakdown of what happened and makes Howard the duck look even worse than I thought. I never saw his comments saying Michigan wasn't using full court press but "5 man pressure" 😂 good lord he's even a bigger moron than I could have ever imagined. And why on earth was the Badgers coach fined $10,000 for?!o_O The NCAA is beyond a joke at this point its not even funny smdh

(also lol at Davison eagerly yelling to everyone "come on guys we gotta sing varsity!! We gotta sing varsity!" 🤣 What a tool. I bet he'll be making public appearances signing crappy badger merchandise at a Walmart in Madison for years to come.

Anyways, lets get to the important stuff. Lets make these oversized rodents road kill today. GO ILLINI!:chief:

I can't imagine it would be worth it for Iowa..he could tear something. At 13 I had mine out and after I was stuck at home for a week or so...I was bored so I sawed 3 broomsticks and such, connected them to make a hang glider....ripped a sheet for my glider...got all the neighborhood kids over...got on my garage to fly....and went almost straight down and...tore all my stitches and such out....my Dad was so pissed..my Dr. too...and almost forgot my Mom was pretty mad too. 😇

Ummm....I know the B1G is physical and all....but are you really comparing jumping off your garage attached to brooms and sheets....to basketball??

Also, have you contacted Johnny Knoxville about a possible role in the next Jackass movie?

As for stitches, modern surgery now requires no "incisions" to remove small organs. Two holes, robot arms go in...pluck organ out. Almost no stitches to rip out in most cases.

hard to pick Illinois on the road against a talented team which has, as of late, been playing much better (especially at home). sorry, but wake me up when Illinois brings intensity and effort for a full 40 minutes. they haven't done it yet and i don't see it happening tomorrow. they'll play a solid 30 minutes or so, but otherwise give up a 20-2 run and lose by 7.

i know i'm going to get flamed for this, but what has anybody seen this year to make them confident that this team can/will "bring it" for 40 mins? i love this team and coaching staff, and think the future of Illinois hoops is very bright, but there is just (at least to this juncture) something missing with this team. i realize some of that can be attributed to injuries and the inability for the team (and specific players groups/units) to gel, but that is not a good reason for their often disinterested play.

they certainly have the talent to "turn it on" and make a deep tourney run, but that's not all that easy to do, especially when they're a much lower seed because of having lost a handful of games they shouldn't have lost.
Good post, you shouldn't be flamed for it.

What I see is a team that runs a really subpar halfcourt offense. Very little movement especially off the ball. I know the goal is to spread it out and get it to Kofi but we literally stand and watch after the ball enters the post. People collapse and we do not move to open spaces to give clear kick out options.

This gets negated when guys start hitting difficult contested three point shots. But if they aren't dropping, we have little else.
